To be Gutted that Roseanne has been cancelled

I know her tweets were abhorrent but I was loving the reboot. I also feel for all the cast and crew who have now lost their jobs.

Ffs Roseanne, what were you thinking?

OP posts:
Helmetbymidnight · 30/05/2018 09:43

Working class people do support him

This is way too simplistic, I feel.

Some w/c people supported him, some m/c people do too. Key indicators for being trump supporter include being poorly educated - but not nec poor- live in a state with history of racial tensions, being white, being male, prone to paranoia.

SeahorsesAREhorses · 30/05/2018 09:45

She said some terrible things and deserved to lose her job. I feel awful for the rest of the cast and crew though.

I think we need to consider that there are lots of men who have been involved in domestic violence and we happily go to see them, no one blinks. They receive awards, give awards.

Kellie Maloney, Johnny Depp, loads of them.

She is female so will be utterly destroyed, men can get away with shit and it won't destroy their careers.

SitandStay · 30/05/2018 09:45

When the original show was out, Social media didn't exist - the only way we heard the views of actors or celebs like this were through interviews.

She was probably exactly the same then but she just didn't have the platform to blast these types of views around the world in seconds.

A brain injury may make you lose your inhibition but I am pretty sure it doesn't make you racist. The thoughts are hers.

noeffingidea · 30/05/2018 09:46

Helmet 'being male'
Actually a lot of white women supported Trump as well.

EleanorHooverbelt · 30/05/2018 09:47

Yes but it’s not why the show has been shut down, so the suggestion that Joan rivers ‘gets away with it’ and roseanne doesn’t, doesn’t really stand

Regarding the show cancellation, yes, you are right. But when people were talking about the outrage over the cookie incident, I was taking it as a single instance of her behaviour and comparing it with another comedian who has done similar jokes and more frequently too without causing offence.

This latest racial slur is of course completely abhorrent.

It may sound as if I am a fan. I'm not. Never watched the original show. Saw a few episodes and not my type of thing, so wouldn't have been watching this new show either. So I have no "dog in this fight" as the saying goes.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/05/2018 09:48

I think the culture in America has changed too- having a racist president has emboldened racists.

Its good to see the push-back - terrible that it’s necessary.

noeffingidea · 30/05/2018 09:48

Seahorses stop trying to nake this into a feminust issue. It isn't. Roseanne destroyed herself, no one else.

EleanorHooverbelt · 30/05/2018 09:50

www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-30/roseanne-barr-responds-to-cancellation:-dont-feel-sorry-for-me/9816798

"Guys I did something unforgiveable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting — it was memorial day too —I went 2 far & do not want it defended — it was egregious Indefensible. I made a mistake I wish I hadn't but…don't defend it please. ty," she tweeted.

Despite not asking for sympathy from her supporters, Barr continued to share support from other Twitter users, who compared her comments about Ms Jarrett with comparisons made by others on Twitter between US President Donald Trump and orangutans, as well as controversial comments made by liberal US television personalities Keith Olbermann and Joy Behar.

SeahorsesAREhorses · 30/05/2018 09:52

I know she did noeffing

However, we still celebrate men who have done far worse, physically hurt women. They still have their careers, we even think women are making a bit of a fuss when they speak out.

Emmasmum2013 · 30/05/2018 09:53

@SeahorsesAREhorses

There's loads more as well;

Sean Bean, Chris Brown, John Lennon, Mel Gibson... the list goes on.

But I don't think this is a male/female thing. She's a horrible racist who is so entrenched in her backwards beliefs that she actually thought her comment would have been found funny and not offensive. I just feel sorry for the rest of the cast too.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/05/2018 09:53

She’s an idiot.

My list wasn’t exclusive, noeffing, but more women voted Clinton than trump and more men voted trump than Clinton.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 30/05/2018 09:55

Seahorse Roseanne went on a racist rant, she didn't commit an act of domestic violence. Racist rants aren't tolerated in Hollywood by men or women, Mel Gibson is still trying to crawl his pathetic way back.

Really, this whole re-boot was already Roseanne's 2nd chance. She's been a pariah in the industry for years because of her views and outbursts. I think they were just hoping and praying that she'd take her chance seriously and not blow it this time. Ah well.

noeffingidea · 30/05/2018 09:59

Seahorses it's two different things. I wouldn't say one is worse than the other.

Thespringsthething · 30/05/2018 10:05

Traumatic brain injury can cause things like disinhibition and make people do impulsive things. Their personalities can also change, but I don't think it would make them racist/scathing towards ethnic minorities unless they really felt like that, but it could definitely lower the bar for blurting out socially unacceptable things. So, I don't accept the TBI explanation, plus she's had it since 16 and so those around her must know her basic way of thinking- it's not like they built the series around her and then she had the injury.

It's an interesting question of what people would have been like if they didn't have brain trauma, but even I don't think TBI is the explanation for half of America voting Trump and being quite racist.

MissVanjie · 30/05/2018 10:06

While joan rivers made some near the knuckle dark jokes about hitler, i don’t think she actually dressed up as him and cooked jew cookies tho. That’s some really dark shit.

Regarding the ‘men have done worse and still have careers’ thing - i do think we’re in the midst of a seachange in attitudes about this. Maybe i’m being overly optimistic, but i think that’s what’s happening now. So unfortunately, if we want men to have consequences for garbage behaviour then the same has to apply to women.

RedDwarves · 30/05/2018 10:11

The holocaust also included millions who were not Jews, including people with disabilities so not sure why being Jewish necessarily makes it okay to joke about it anyway.

Actually, to get technical, the "Holocaust" or Shoah only refers to the liquidation/extermination of Jews stemming from the Final Solution. It doesn't refer to anything beforehand. This is accepted by all credible historians.

CremeBrulee · 30/05/2018 10:16

I haven't seen the reboot but remember the original show from back in the day.

I think revisiting the wider family without the Roseanne character would be much more interesting than rehashing what went before.

EleanorHooverbelt · 30/05/2018 10:28

I didn't know this, thank you.

However, jokes about Hitler in general and not the Holocaust in particular would be including all the other groups of people killed under Hitler's regime.

RedDwarves · 30/05/2018 10:33

However, jokes about Hitler in general and not the Holocaust in particular would be including all the other groups of people killed under Hitler's regime.

This is very true. I do agree.

Ultimately, Roseanne just seems to be quite a nasty person, and I'm surprised that it has taken this long for it to bite her.

GabsAlot · 30/05/2018 10:40

i was going to watch it whnever it started to air-shes really blown it now shame as the other characters were always excellent

pigmcpigface · 30/05/2018 10:52

"Actually, to get technical, the "Holocaust" or Shoah only refers to the liquidation/extermination of Jews stemming from the Final Solution. It doesn't refer to anything beforehand. This is accepted by all credible historians"

This is true, but there's an important temporal point here: the word 'holocaust' came to be used after the event (50s/60s) to describe the attempt to exterminate groups of people by the Nazis, with an emphasis on the horrific numbers of Jewish casualties. At the time that the death pits of Operation Barbarossa happened, continuing into the time of the death and labour camps, the word wasn't being used to describe what was going on. In the Nazi self-understanding of what was happening, boundaries between different groups were distinct and yet also oddly blurred - the Final Solution to the Jewish Question was running alongside the Final Solution to the Gypsy Question as similar problems, communism was frequently described as a 'Jewish threat', etc. Behind all of them was the idea that difference was a threat to the project of creating Lebensraum - a European order that prioritised the Aryan over all other racial and ethnic groups, but that also had a cultural dimension, so that the border between racial otherness and ideological otherness tended to merge and to be mapped on to a physiology that also placed disabled people in danger.

SalemBlackCat · 30/05/2018 10:56

OP, are you sure your father hasn't confused Roseanne with Rosie O'Donnell? Unfortunately I have seen several people on Facebook who seem to confuse Roseanne and Rosie a lot. They are both loud mouths, just on opposite sides of the spectrum. A conservative on facebook said Roseanne was a loudmouth lefty feminist idiot. It had to be point out to him that Rosie and Roseanne are two entirely different people.

rainingcatsanddog · 30/05/2018 10:58

Trump HATES Rosie O'Donnell so maybe you're right.

EleanorHooverbelt · 30/05/2018 10:59

It's hard to believe others who worked with Roseanne for years and years were not aware of her beliefs and attitudes. She doesn't seem to hold back.

Makes one wonder what they heard behind closed doors and let pass in order to continue working on her show.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/05/2018 11:07

Actually I'm glad ABC reacted so swiftly in cancelling the show, it sends out a good message that idiotic racist tweets have consequences. It's a shame that the rest of the cast and crew have lost out because of this vile individual. And now "don't defend me" self Indulgent tweets, to highlight the fact that people are defending her, not that she was in any way wrong. She is not in the slightest bit sorry.
