I know her tweets were abhorrent but I was loving the reboot. I also feel for all the cast and crew who have now lost their jobs.

Ffs Roseanne, what were you thinking?

OP posts:
HotelRoomforOne · 30/05/2018 07:07

Also I absolutely loved seeing Jackie and Laurie Metcalfe in this role again, one of my all time favourite characters. No thanks to you Roseanne, a character now gone forever, probably. Also how much abuse can non white Americans take!? It’s been going on for centuries, when will it end? We are all humans Roseanne, even you!! I wouldn’t step foot in America if you paid me a billion dollars.

84CharingCrossRoad · 30/05/2018 07:09

Just heard on the news that some networks are cancelling reshowings of the original show too now. I think what she said was abhorrent!!

Step · 30/05/2018 07:10

Nast nasty comments. For that I'm pleased it's gone it shows that it is clearly not acceptable and we should be pleased the network took a stand.

bsbabas · 30/05/2018 07:19

Hollywood

TheHulksPurplePanties · 30/05/2018 07:19

Looks like she can't help herself:

OliviaStabler · 30/05/2018 07:24

But the more I think about it, why couldn't they have just sacked her?

The original show was built around her actual life and children. I simply don't think it would have worked without her there.

StealthPolarBear · 30/05/2018 07:30

Excellent post the road less Rocky. Some people do some to get away with (actions slightly short of) murder.

NotARegularPenguin · 30/05/2018 07:41

I think it could work with killing her character off. Rename the show The Conners.....or even keep the name. Make it more like Modern Family....so not so centric round one character but the focus moving on different ones.

pigmcpigface · 30/05/2018 07:42

"In general, I believe in separating the artist and the art, and not boycotting the art because of what the artist does."

I think this is an interesting point, and I generally agree. However, my gut feeling about this is that it reveals something that was kind of there all along in Roseanne, not something alien and 'outside of' it. I think the difference in register people have noted with the reboot is because there is a tension there between the work of Wanda Sykes, the chief writer, and the work of Roseanne Barr herself. Sykes's skill has basically been to take white working class America and create storylines that reveal and then negate bigotry, bringing each episode to a 'happy conclusion' with which liberal America could feel comfortable. Barr's tweets just destroyed that delicate balance. But I think that underlying ugliness has always been there in her and in the show.

PerfectlyDone · 30/05/2018 07:44

So actions have consequences, huh?
Who knew?!

Roseanne, the character, represents exactly the Trump voting demographic.
Roseanne, the person, I don't know enough about to comment.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 30/05/2018 07:46

But art is generally an expression of the artists feelings/emotions & thoughts. So saying that is like saying we should separate Mein Kampf from the Holocaust, you can't do that.

I don’t know if she’s ever sold the rights, but Roseanne Barr definitely used to own the concept of the show. To make another show based on characters she created would be impossible without paying her.

fcekinghell · 30/05/2018 07:49

I've never watched Roseanne but my understanding is that she has mental health problems resulting from an accident at birth and it has been said that her behaviour changed after that. Maybe she struggles to understand the implications of the things she says and does? in which case she needs to get help / medication to avoid situations like this.

Yoksha · 30/05/2018 07:52

I've never felt the love for her. I'm glad the show has been cancelled. I'm sad for the rest of the cast that's become collateral damage.

I can't tolerate racism. It's right up there on the same level of utter internal human disgust as paedophilia for me.

pigmcpigface · 30/05/2018 07:52

"But art is generally an expression of the artists feelings/emotions & thoughts. So saying that is like saying we should separate Mein Kampf from the Holocaust, you can't do that."

I'm not sure that's quite true.

Plenty of great male artists have been horrible people. In fact, nearly all of them!! Grin You'd basically have to boycott most of the Western canon if you took that stance.

Mein Kampf is a work of direct propaganda. That's not the same as a work of art that seeks to hold something together in all its ambivalence and complexity.

TheNavigator · 30/05/2018 07:54

Metal health problems don't turn you into a great big racist. Can we please stop trying to find excuses for her indefensible views?

MrsWhirly · 30/05/2018 08:00

As well as her latest outburst, she has some pretty extreme and offensive opinions that she has expressed before. I’m glad they cancelled

RedDwarves · 30/05/2018 08:03

Her behaviour changed after her birth?

That makes no sense.

LucheroTena · 30/05/2018 08:06

Roseanne is a damaged woman with obvious mental health issues who has often behaved badly. I feel sad that the show has been cancelled as was looking forward to seeing it eventually. The early seasons were wonderful, like nothing I’d seen before. Roseanne, Jackie and Darlene were amazing feminist characters.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/05/2018 08:08

Fancy a trump supporter being a racist! This must be an enormous shock - to no one.

WilburIsSomePig · 30/05/2018 08:10

I have no sympathy for her or anyone else who displays this kind of behaviour. You can try all you like, there are no excuses.

I DO have a lot of sympathy for the 500 or so cast and crew members who have lost their jobs because of her fucking stupidity.

EleanorHooverbelt · 30/05/2018 08:24

NRFT but I have wondered how much this:-

At 16, Barr was hit by a car; the incident left her with a traumatic brain injury.[8] Her behavior changed so radically that she was institutionalized for eight months at Utah State Hospital

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roseanne_Barr

has contributed to some of her off-the-wall behaviours.

TheVanguardSix · 30/05/2018 08:25

This truly has been a reboot in every way.
She's as abhorrent now as she was back in the day when the original Roseanne was on.
I just think it's a total shame that the whole show was cancelled!
That was Sara Gilbert's baby, her creation. She was totally behind the reboot. So I have huge sympathy for the cast and crew.
People like Roseanne think they're above reproach. The problem is, when people like her fall, they pull down a bunch of innocent bystanders with them. That truly sucks.

EleanorHooverbelt · 30/05/2018 08:25

I have a relative recovering from a TBI myself right now and I am wondering how they will be changed by this.

newdaylight · 30/05/2018 08:31

my understanding is that she has mental health problems resulting from an accident at birth and it has been said that her behaviour changed after that.

This is true. She didn't tweet any racist comments before she was born. They all came after her birth, without exception. I think this proves a case of a traumatic accident around her birth and a case of Post Traumatic Racism Disorder
