I know her tweets were abhorrent but I was loving the reboot. I also feel for all the cast and crew who have now lost their jobs.

Ffs Roseanne, what were you thinking?

OP posts:
FurryDice · 30/05/2018 03:46

But it seemed very misogynistic when he said it.

mathanxiety · 30/05/2018 04:27

FurryDice
And you know, Roseanne isn’t actually the antichrist. Like everyone she has light and shade

But there comes a time when you have to decide whether you want to be publicly associated with that sort of offensiveness. So light and shade, nuance, the many dimensions of the human at the keyboard don't matter. She herself forced her colleagues to choose sides.

Pemba · 30/05/2018 04:27

I used to love her show back in the 80s. But this is beyond the pale (as MNHQ say) .......

What on earth is wrong with her?

WelcomeToGilead · 30/05/2018 04:39

How is that misogynistic? She is!

AlaskaSometimes · 30/05/2018 04:39

FurryDice she has come out with some repulsive things. She is openly racist. Has called black women apes before. Believes all the insane right-wing conspiracy theories such as pizzagate. Has abused and posted ugly images and memes about left wing celebrities. She really is trash.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 30/05/2018 04:43

Well I'm pissed off about it.
I used to love watching Roseanne and really wanted to watch te reboot but not only has that been pulled, all re-runs of the old show have been pulled too.

Totally right that it's been pulled, don't get me wrong, but what a fuckwitted way to have that happen - "oo look at me being an overt racist because I'm so important" - nah, nope, you're not and now you're off the air.

Really angry with Roseanne Barr for BEING a fuckwitted racist and for thinking it's ok to share those abhorrent and repulsive views, and for just having them in the first place.

Maybe they could do a show with Laurie Metcalfe as the lead character instead? After Roseanne had died or something?

thebewilderness · 30/05/2018 05:09

She has continued to post racist tweets ever since her faux apology.

It does strike me that the response is always much more dramatic when a woman does goes on a racist rant that when men do.

ShamelesslyPlacemarking · 30/05/2018 05:10

Has it not been Roseanne's schtick since forever to viciously insult everyone around, glorify stupidity and aggressively middle-finger bourgeois concepts like respect and hard work?

She's not sorry she said it, she's sorry she didn't get away with it like she pretty much always has. It's hard not to think that everyone working on the show knew what she was like when they happily signed up for more of the same.

PerkingFaintly · 30/05/2018 06:12

I am sounding slightly like an apologist now

You are. And you joined MN just to start this thread. Or namechanged.

Why's that?

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/05/2018 06:20

She has always stuck me as being loud mouth and vulgar. No one should be above public scrutiny.

HotelRoomforOne · 30/05/2018 06:22

It's depressing that Roseanne couldn't control the twitter vitriol for the sake of her castmates and fans of the show. How could she think so little of jeopardising the jobs of the other actors, who I felt entered into the reboot with great enthisiasm and joy. I was delighted to see the reboot, thought it would tackle some of the extremely complicated and pernicious problems in the usa at the moment. There was a lot of potential there. It also gave me a sense of continuity with my own past as I loved the show as a child, it informed my earliest feminist feelings. Roseanne actually seems completely erratic and at odds with the messages in her own show! I have no time for racism and abusing people from the great hight of your mobile phone is pathetic.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/05/2018 06:34

She’s got her racist president, so she thought racism was acceptable now. She’s not the first to make that mistake.

Twat.

UserX · 30/05/2018 06:37

I was just surprised, given the whole Twitterverse had her down as a Trumpite and he, being a Trumpite, didn’t like her.

I didn’t get it.

Do you not get that trump supporters fear and dislike everyone who is not a white man? Stop apologizing for Roseanne, she’s awful, she’s always been awful, but now she’s empowered by trumps America. And stop worrying your poor head about all the people out of a job because of it. They’ll be fine.

BelfastBloke · 30/05/2018 06:38

In general, I believe in separating the artist and the art, and not boycotting the art because of what the artist does.

But now here’s an immediate example. And I tend to agree that in the current climate, a public stance against abhorrent behaviour HAS to be taken. She is SO identified with that show that, even though its re-boot was much, much more nuanced than she is, it still has to be taken down with her.

That’s a damn shame, because the on-screen example of families getting on despite their political differences is a necessary thing.

TheRoadLessRocky · 30/05/2018 06:44

OP I get what you're saying. I haven't seen the show but I was looking forward to it. My first thought upon seeing the news was 'stupid cow now I won't get to watch it'.

But the more I think about it, why couldn't they have just sacked her? If others are writing it and others are producing it, couldn't they have forced her out? Then the ahow could have continued. To those saying everyone working on it has successful careers and plenty of money - only the big names do. What about all the production crew? Cleaners, catering crew, camera crew, make up & wardrobe, publicity, PAs, extras/bit part actors. They're all going to be relying on that contract to see them through the next however long.

And also, yes we shouldn't give airtime to someone who publicly makes such awful statements (and such a seemingly pointless one - besides being racist and inaccurate, what was even the point in saying the woman looked like an ape?) but it was just words. Chris Brown beat up a woman - still working. Polanski raped a child - still working. Woody Allen - accused of sexual abuse - still working. What is the double standard here? Is it because she is a woman, or because verbal racism is considered worse than physical abuse of females? And before anyone suggests I'm being an apologist - I'm saying that Roseanne Barr still should have consequences for her tweets and these men should have consequences for their actions, not that she should be let off because they have been.

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 30/05/2018 06:48

Havn’t seen the new version - but she appears to have spent her time off air having plastic surgery, she used to look different!

TheHulksPurplePanties · 30/05/2018 06:49

I understand what you're saying. The re-boot was very good, and I love John Goodman and the rest of the cast, and I thought it was doing a good job of highlighting what it's like to be lower class American in Trump's America probably because Roseanne had no say in the script writing

However, I'm glad ABC & Disney acted as quickly as they did. What she said was abhorrent and can't be tolerated, as the namesake of the show, they can't ignore.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 30/05/2018 06:50

But the more I think about it, why couldn't they have just sacked her?

Doesn't really make sense to have a show called Roseanne without a Roseanne....

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 30/05/2018 06:55

She has always been controversial that is what I liked about her she wouldn’t toe the line to suit tv executives

But this is so disappointing but I think she will come back she has a history of mh issues and already blaming her medication

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 30/05/2018 06:55

Could have called it "After Roseanne" and still have got away with it...

FuckPants · 30/05/2018 06:56

Ambien is a hell of a drug.

I don't feel sorry for Roseanne at all, she's always been like this and it's about time it bit her in the arse.

TheShapeOfEwe · 30/05/2018 06:58

I think there is room for debate when one character says appalling things and the entire show they’re in, which is NOT representative of those views, gets cancelled thus affecting so many others.

I think you're focusing on the wrong victims here. It's fine to feel sorry for her castmates for the loss of opportunity, but at the end of the day they're all extremely privileged TV stars with a lot of power and influence.

What about the people RB harms with her terrible racism? If she had just received a slap on the wrist, the thing studio would effectively be saying that they didn't care about harming and abusing people of colour. They would be saying that entertainment, and protecting privileged jobs, is more important than standing up to discrimination.

RB is a hideous racist, there's no way around that. The only way views like hers can be addressed is by swift and serious negative consequences for those who express them.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 30/05/2018 07:00

Could have called it "After Roseanne" and still have got away with it...

They still could, but it will take awhile to check the feasibility of that show. Not something they could concoct and commit to in the few hours they had to respond. Better to cancel the whole show and walk away.

PeakPants · 30/05/2018 07:06

How is calling someone a loudmouth piece of shit misogynistic? You do realise that feminism is not about giving women the right to do and say whatever the fuck they like and everyone having to blindly support them? It's really not. She is a loudmouth piece of shit. Truly.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 30/05/2018 07:07

No I suppose not, Purplepanties - I know the industry is far more complicated than we'd like to think it is!
