Royal wedding outfits (because they are the best bit!)

Without being bitchy about actual physical attributes, who looked great and who didn't quite make the grade?

I thought the bride's mother's outfit was lovely. Amal Clooney's yellow dress looked fab. Pippa Middleton's dress was v pretty. I liked Victoria beckham's too. Some lovely hats here:

But Eugenie and Beatrice bless them both seem to have gone for quite unflattering dresses in my personal opinion. They are young, slim, pretty, have lovely shiny hair and have an unlimited budget - how do they manage to get the dresses wrong?!

Eugenie just looked like a box;. That JackieO look is so hard to wear

If she had taken the hat off she could have gone to work in any office and no one would have noticed the dress. It was so plain. It looked like something from Hobbs work wear range.

I agree with you there eloise not nice behaviour at all. From an armchair psychologist point of view you could argue she was trying to reinact the love triangle she was in and 'win'. But still very awful behaviour. There had to be a veritable sea of single men she could have chosen from. At some point I think her status as a very desirable woman gave her a sense of entitlement and led to her making some very dodgy decisions.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/05/2018 11:06

Charles wanted to marry Camila before he married Diana Burgess told he couldn't.

If only he'd had the courage of King Haakon of Norway who, when told he couldn't marry the woman he loved, said that in that case he'd remain unmarried, thus ensuing the end of the Norwegian monarchy as he had no heirs.

He and Queen Sonja will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 26/05/2018 11:24

Diana didn’t get to see her sons grow up and still you get people criticising her.

The80sweregreat · 26/05/2018 11:27

Prince Charles was spineless over Camilla when they first met - but I think he also liked playing the field at the time as well. He was a bit of a playboy! So he didn’t give her a lot of choice. I’m no fan of hers as we know what happened but - at first- he didn’t fight for her or challenge the ‘unsuitable ‘ tag.

raisedbyguineapigs · 26/05/2018 11:39

Charles does give the impression of being weak, vain and spoilt. He dithered and dithered thinking Camilla would hang about then didn't have the backbone to fight for the woman he loved or the moral strength to see what he and his family were doing, making him marry a poorly educated child from a very damaged background.

WallisWindsor · 26/05/2018 11:44

Idris Alba matchy-matchy Gucci was a fail and then she made it worse by donning a shoulder bag.
Best dressed: Jessica Mulroney, Abigail Spencer, Gina Tores, Carole and Pippa Middleton. Oprah was a triumph.

eloisesparkle · 26/05/2018 11:52

Don'tDrinkDon't
I was/am one of Diana's biggest fans. I am sad that she has not been able to see her lovely sons grow up- she died far too young.
But in that one aspect re affairs with married men- I'm afraid I can't condone it.

WallisWindsor · 26/05/2018 11:53

Idris Alba fiancée

JessieMcJessie · 26/05/2018 11:55

QueenoftheAndals if Charles had threatened to remain unmarried like King Haakon, and the Queen had called his bluff, we’d have been looking at King Andrew followed by Queen Beatrice! Shock

Slartybartfast · 26/05/2018 12:03

Has anyone mentioned the lovely duchess of Kent, or are we no longer discussing outfitfs

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/05/2018 12:06

I'm not sure she would have. After all, what exactly was wrong with Camilla? She was hardly in the same league as Wallis Simpson! She was from a fairly upper-class background and her family had been socialising with the royals for years so she would've known how to behave. Certainly in the years since they married she's acquitted herself pretty well.

I worked with a woman who'd met her and said that she's more attractive in person and looks like an older Diana!

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/05/2018 12:08

@Slartybartfast I thought the duchess looked very frail and unwell. Perhaps that's why she's not been seen at Wimbledon recently. Apparently she and the Duke have been unofficially separated for years, though they keep up appearances at major events.

JessieMcJessie · 26/05/2018 12:09

Queen I hear that Andy is her favourite, maybe HM would have jumped at the chance to give him a crack at being King Smile. After all she had form for forbidding marriages, as her poor unfortunate sister knew.

I rather like Camilla but I do always imagine she must stink of fags.

Belindabauer · 26/05/2018 12:12

Nobody knows what pressure they are under.
Like I said 40 years ago Meghan Markle would not have been a royal bride fullstop.
They have to fulfil certain criteria which is why Charles married Diana. She didn't have a past. She expressed doubts about marrying him but her vile grandmother pushed her into it, telling her the feelings of doubt were perfectly natural. Her own sister told her it was too late to pull out.
Even Sarah Furguson was slated by the press for having had a boyfriend before she married Prince Andrew.
Edward V111 abdicated because he married Wallis Simpson. She was willing not to marry him and remain his bit on the side whilst he married a 'suitable wonan' but he refused. He was regarded as not taking his duty seriously.

Nobody is slating Diana but the fact remains she did shag about with married men. It really is as simple as that.
Prince Charles has been brought up within a system that encourages royal men to sleep around.

Roussette · 26/05/2018 12:22

I have a lot of time for Duchess of Kent, Katharine. She has suffered from MH problems and is 86 now and quite frail. I love that she travelled 400 miles a week to teach music at a state primary school, all incognito. None of the pupils knew who she was. She was just 'Mrs. Kent'. And this was for 13 years, the pupils loved her and she loved teaching them.

WallisWindsor · 26/05/2018 12:23

Belindabauer True. And Charles only managed to marry Camilla after the Queen mother's death.

JessieMcJessie · 26/05/2018 12:24

Rousette that’s lovely. Did the kids not wonder why Mrs Kent was presenting the trophy at Wimbledon though?

SirVixofVixHall · 26/05/2018 12:42

I think Camilla is very nice looking, I imagine she is much more fun than Diana , who was a vulnerable girl when she married, after a pretty tough childhood. Diana would have been much happier marrying some lovely gentle, protective and devoted soul when she’d had time to grow up a bit. She was shoved into so much pressure at 19, nearly 20 years younger than Meghan M. Hopefully Meghan will cope far better, as an adult woman.

raisedbyguineapigs · 26/05/2018 12:59

I think the Spencer's are as much to blame, if not more for the fiasco of that marriage. They threw their own child under the bus for status. The RF only care about their own survival. Everything they do is to ensure they don't metaphorically at least end up with their heads on spikes. It was up to the Spencer's to protect her from that. They knew she was vulnerable and a completely unsuitable Royal bride.

Roussette · 26/05/2018 13:05

No Jessie as far as I know this was after Wimbledon. She had a teaching certificate from Royal College of Music and used it!

Roussette · 26/05/2018 13:08

This is why she stopped....

"Despite her popularity with tennis fans and her love of the sport, her relationship with Wimbledon and its Chairman went sour. In 1999, the Duchess wanted to take the 12-year-old son of a murdered headmaster to Wimbledon as a treat. Philip Lawrence was a headmaster who was stabbed to death outside the gates of his school in London when he went to the aid of a pupil who was being attacked by a gang.

Katherine reportedly received a “curt letter” from the club chairman, John Curry, who told her only royal children could enter the Royal Box, and so the 12-year-old boy would not be allowed to sit with the Duchess. This infuriated Katherine so much that she said she would boycott the tournament altogether. The Chairman apologised, however, he still would not let children into the Royal Box unless they were royal children"

Roussette · 26/05/2018 13:09

I might have my dates wrong as far as when she taught and when she went to Wimbledon!

DrEustaciaBenson · 26/05/2018 13:21

After all she [the Queen] had form for forbidding marriages, as her poor unfortunate sister knew.

Margaret could have married Townsend, but she'd have had to give up her place in the line of succession. And it wasn't the Queen's sole decision; she was advised that Commonwealth leaders were opposed the marriage.

And really, if a young woman of 23, grieving for her father, posted on MN that she wanted to marry a man sixteen years older, recently divorced with two children, but her sister didn't think it was a good idea, how many people here would be telling her to go for it?

walkswithmydog · 26/05/2018 13:33

What i've noticed on this thread is the absence of anyone saying it's wrong to have an opinion on what the guests were wearing, but threads where people have criticised certain guests outfits are told off for "tearing another woman to shreds". Seems it's only ok to say positive stuff. Why is it only ok to have positive opinions? Seems a bit strange tbh. Hmm
