AIBU to wash my friend's DD's coat?

My friend's DD comes for tea every week after school. She's been wearing the same white coat all winter. And every week the coat is looking filthier and filthier. I have no idea why my friend lets her walk around like it.

Every week that coat hangs on my bannister while she's here and I keep looking at it thinking I could just pop it in my washing machine. But I resist because it's not my place.

Well she forgot to take it home today. I texted my friend and she said don't worry she'll pick it up sometime when passing.

So now I'm looking at it thinking should I just pop it in my machine? Or is that out of order.

Sorry if I sound judgy. I'm not normally.

I would. Just say something got spilled on it.

Tansie1 · 30/04/2018 19:24

I'd wash it, and say in passing, sorry, it fell on the floor and DD/DS/the dog trampled on it in dirty shoes.

Oysterbabe · 30/04/2018 19:24

I wouldn't. It's not your place and you risk offending your friend. It's not worth it.

pigpoglet · 30/04/2018 19:24

Wash it!

ShinyMe · 30/04/2018 19:24

But I resist because it's not my place.

^^That

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 30/04/2018 19:25

How are you going to explain it’s new found condition??

HighwayDragon1 · 30/04/2018 19:25

Wash it. Tell her you spilt something on it/the dog was sick/cat yacked up a hairball on it.

MyFriendFlickaWasAHorse · 30/04/2018 19:25

I think it’s fine. I always wash stuff before I return it.

You do sound slightly judgy about it, but it’s pretty minor. I bet most people would judge a little bit.

Just double check the label.

Phase84 · 30/04/2018 19:25

If its not an expensive one I would wash it. Eugh!

Pleasebeafleabite · 30/04/2018 19:25

Wash it
Wash it
Wash it
Wash it

gabsdot · 30/04/2018 19:25

Yes, put pretend that it fell on the floor and got stood on with muddy boots or something.

Returnofthesmileybar · 30/04/2018 19:25

Do it, if she was over to play I would say no way but as she's left it behind just wash it, say nothing and if she asks say it got mixed up with your dd's washing

Merryoldgoat · 30/04/2018 19:26

I’d wash it - say you spilled something on it.

SauvignonBlanche · 30/04/2018 19:26

Accidentally spill some juice on it.

AmazingPostVoices · 30/04/2018 19:26

It’s really out of order. And you know fine well it is.

Idontdowindows · 30/04/2018 19:26

Only if it is actually washable and then use the "oops cowyuck" excuse

DragonMummy1418 · 30/04/2018 19:26

It's a coat for outdoor wear... it's not a big issue if it gets dirty really.

But I wouldn't be upset if you washed it unless you shrunk / damaged it...

Are you sure washing it won't damage the waterproof layer?

CuntPuffin · 30/04/2018 19:27

Wash it. As long as it doesn't have a specific dry clean only label in it.

Betsy86 · 30/04/2018 19:27

Wash it! Say it fell on the floor like pp said dont say was trampled on she might turn round and say you damaged it or something ridiculous for a new one..

GrimSqueaker · 30/04/2018 19:27

One of my kids ones is shocking (it's like a pale beige - not a colour I would have picked). It's actually washed very regularly but since the child it belongs to likes to trail their arm along walls and railings and stuff the sleeves are always filthy regardless of however it's washed.

I've actually stopped them wearing it lest we get judged.

Grilledaubergines · 30/04/2018 19:27

I’d want to. But I wouldn’t. I’d be mortified if a friend washed my child’s coat. Partly through embarrassment and partly feeling is inconvenienced her.

Notevilstepmother · 30/04/2018 19:27

If you do wash it, then I’d agree about making an excuse. It’s not worth upsetting your friend over.

NellytheElephant18 · 30/04/2018 19:28

I know of school teachers who have accidentally-on-purpose spilled milk on particularly stinky, grubby coats as an excuse to take them home and wash them. Do it!

KarinVogel · 30/04/2018 19:28

Could you send her a text to say that something has happened
to the coat ...spill/sick/dog drool etc and offer to chuck it in the wash. Make it something you can actually drop onto the coat if she says no though.

melissasummerfield · 30/04/2018 19:28

I would wash it!
