AIBU to wash my friend's DD's coat?

My friend's DD comes for tea every week after school. She's been wearing the same white coat all winter. And every week the coat is looking filthier and filthier. I have no idea why my friend lets her walk around like it.

Every week that coat hangs on my bannister while she's here and I keep looking at it thinking I could just pop it in my washing machine. But I resist because it's not my place.

Well she forgot to take it home today. I texted my friend and she said don't worry she'll pick it up sometime when passing.

So now I'm looking at it thinking should I just pop it in my machine? Or is that out of order.

Sorry if I sound judgy. I'm not normally.

Oops someone just spilt something on it/it fell on the floor and someone with muddy shoes stood on it didn’t they?

Wash it.

blueskyinmarch · 30/04/2018 19:29

Check the washing instructions first. It may not be machine washable. If it is go with the spilling something on it ruse and bung it in the machine.

Adayindisney67 · 30/04/2018 19:31

It's white. Are you sure its not just stained and she can't get the staining out, Considering winter is nearly over she isn't about to fork out for another just yet?
If you think you can get the muck out wash it and tell her you're good at that stuff so wanted to help.
I'm crap at getting stains out, so I would be thankful..

My son choose a yellow coat and it stains like mad, but I can assure you I wash it! He is just a typical boy.

lardymclardy · 30/04/2018 19:31

Yep accidentally trip and chuck your coffee over it, stick it in the wash.

I only clicked on the thread as I read it as AIBU to wash friend's DD's cat. Eh?!

Highfever · 30/04/2018 19:32

I'd pop it in and tell her after!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 30/04/2018 19:33

Do it, say the dog trod some mud on it or something!

TheDowagerCuntess · 30/04/2018 19:35

As long as you're sure it won't be damaged, yes, I absolutely would wash it.

Aria2015 · 30/04/2018 19:35

Oh I hate messy coats! I wash my lo's at the slightest stain! I'd wash it and say that I just grabbed it with my lo's coat without realising.

AmericanBiscuits · 30/04/2018 19:35

FFS wash it! Wink

anniemagoo · 30/04/2018 19:38

I've just checked the label. It says machine wash at 40.

Shall I go for it..? Wink

I'd wash it without blinking an eye tbh, as would any of my friends.

anniemagoo · 30/04/2018 19:39

The dog thing is a good plan. We have a dog so I think I'll run with that.

I always wash dds friends stuff if they’ve left it here, usually clothes that have been worn here though so I suppose it’s different - I actually have a ‘friends stuff’ laundry basket that’s full of their washed stuff!
A coat is a bit different, but yeah I’d wash it and make an excuse. Just be careful and make sure you follow instructions - or hand wash it. I washed dds new coat recently following instructions and it totally ruined the filling, it went all clumpy and it wasn’t a cheap coat either Hmm

It's really not an issue just wash it & return. I wouldn't even mention it had been washed unless she brings it up & to be fair if my friend returned an item of clothing freshly washed I would think it was nice of them. I don't get why they'd be offended it's clearly dirty and you've done her a favour. If she does ask if you washed it just say yes you were doing a white wash anyway and didn't want to send it back smelling of your dog/cat/wanted it to smell fresh.

Queenio24 · 30/04/2018 19:42

Yes, wash it. A coat that hasn't been washed all winter will honk a bit- unfair on the child.
Just make sure you don't shrink it!

NorthernKnickers · 30/04/2018 19:43

I'd wash it...poor child walking around in a grubby coat! (Definitely make an excuse up though so as not to embarrass anyone).

crunchtime · 30/04/2018 19:43

Absolutely wash it. I hate a dirty coat on a child.

Pastaagain78 · 30/04/2018 19:44

Wash it.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 30/04/2018 19:46

No, you can't wash it.

I really really want you to wash it, from your description, but....no, you just can't.

OliviaStabler · 30/04/2018 19:46

Go for it!

TheKitchenWitch · 30/04/2018 19:47

Who buys a WHITE coat though?
Yes, wash it. Please.

CaledonianQueen · 30/04/2018 19:51

My daughter and her friends are forever leaving their clothes at each others houses, we always wash the item before sending it back. Dd and her friends are always in clean/ well kept clothes but are more likely to be climbing trees than playing dolls so by the end of the school day their clothes need washing.

I would say that your dh accidentally popped it in the wash, or say that the dog/ cat had made a bed out of it and you didn't want to send it back covered in dog/ cat hair.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 30/04/2018 19:53

I’d wash it or at the very least I’d be inclined to baby wipe it.

yawnicorn · 30/04/2018 19:53

Another one saying wash it...it will be so nice for her having it all clean!

RickyGold · 30/04/2018 19:53

my first thought was you can't but then I thought about all the random school jumpers and socks!! that are left behind by ds's pals and I always wash them before they are claimed, so why not
