AIBU to wash my friend's DD's coat?

My friend's DD comes for tea every week after school. She's been wearing the same white coat all winter. And every week the coat is looking filthier and filthier. I have no idea why my friend lets her walk around like it.

Every week that coat hangs on my bannister while she's here and I keep looking at it thinking I could just pop it in my washing machine. But I resist because it's not my place.

Well she forgot to take it home today. I texted my friend and she said don't worry she'll pick it up sometime when passing.

So now I'm looking at it thinking should I just pop it in my machine? Or is that out of order.

Sorry if I sound judgy. I'm not normally.

I wouldn't. I'm surprised at the number of people saying they would, to be honest.

cushioncovers · 30/04/2018 19:55

Yep I would wash it c

ChikiTIKI · 30/04/2018 19:55

I would. I'd say it fell on the floor and someone stood on it by mistake with dirty shoes.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 30/04/2018 19:57

You could say child left it outside and bird pooed on it

Thequeenisdeadboys · 30/04/2018 19:57

Get it washed ! She'd probably be really pleased.

OpenthePickles · 30/04/2018 19:57

Yes wash it, she probably won't even notice anyway - she doesn't notice the dirt so chances are it won't register with her.

AmazingPostVoices · 30/04/2018 19:58

This thread has Daily Mail written all over it.

At very least if you hand back a clean white coat to an MNer tomorrow you might be blushing when she offers you some pom bears as a thank you.

UpstartCrow · 30/04/2018 19:58

I would, and I wouldn't bother with an explanation. I didnt always have a toothbrush or toothpaste and would have loved for someone to intervene.

youthrewmysandwichAWAY · 30/04/2018 19:59

It's white. Are you sure its not just stained and she can't get the staining out, Considering winter is nearly over she isn't about to fork out for another just yet?

This. My son's coat is green and so it's less noticeable but his is stained with mud. I'd be fucking mortified if someone washed it.

WindyWednesday · 30/04/2018 19:59

Wash it

fia101 · 30/04/2018 20:00

I'd leave it. It's akin to someone cutting your kids nails. Not your place and by doing it you're saying they should've done it.

Grilledaubergines · 30/04/2018 20:00

That’s a bit different upstart.

Turkkadin · 30/04/2018 20:01

Wash it to give yourself some peace if nothing else. The mother doesn't sound the sort of person to notice if it's clean or not! I can't bear seeing kids in filthy coats. Most kids coats are easily machine washable and quick to dry. What's her excuse!

pippitysqueakity · 30/04/2018 20:01

Just check it does not have a precious autograph on it somewhere...(biter experience!)

Candyflosss · 30/04/2018 20:01

She might be reading your post now. Smile

youthrewmysandwichAWAY · 30/04/2018 20:02

Also I find it really hard to keep on top of washing my 3 kids clothes as well as mine and my husbands and the bedding, towels AND then coats on top. Give her a break. You're overstepping.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 30/04/2018 20:04

Wash it. If a PE kit school uniform is left here I automatically wash it and I’m grateful if someone does if DD leaves something there.

HerRoyalNotness · 30/04/2018 20:06

Of course you can wash it.

I don’t understand these people that would be offended if you did! If I was the mucky coat owners mum I’d be saying thankyou so much and being appreciative Hmm

AdiosPeaceOfRoast · 30/04/2018 20:07

@jammiebammie - put it in the dryer with a couple of tennis balls - should sort out the clumping.

CanIGetARefund · 30/04/2018 20:10

I was in s similar position regarding the coat of a child I used to look after. It smelled so bad the other children used to complain and refuse to sit next to him in the car. I washed it and claimed I had to because it fell in a muddy puddle.

Olympiathequeen · 30/04/2018 20:12

Wash it with a good excuse. Poor kid.

IceSwan · 30/04/2018 20:14

"It fell on the floor, I had to wash it". 100%

Pluckedpencil · 30/04/2018 20:15

I'd just wash it and say that it is because you'd seen one of the sleeves had a mark on and it was quicker to put it in the wash than do one arm. or some other such tosh.

JessicaJonesJacket · 30/04/2018 20:15

I'd wash it. The same as I wash any other DCs' PE kit that ends up coming home accidentally with DS. Likewise when anyone takes his kit home, they send it back washed.
It's not a big deal so I wouldn't make it one. I'd say you washed it along with your DCs' clothes. Don't invent an accidental stain or she'll be on MN saying 'my friend stained my DD's good coat, should she have bought her a new one?' Grin
Just let her know what powder/soap/fabric conditioner you used in case they have allergies.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 30/04/2018 20:16

You say she's been wearing the same coat all winter so it's her only coat? I'm assuming she needs it back fairly promptly then? It's freezing here!

You better check when her mum is picking it up. It'll be fairly awkward if she knocks on the door and it's spinning in the machine or soaking wet. Confused

I don't think there's any need to make up stories about dogs and spillages. Just hand it back and say nothing. If asked I'd say Yes I stuck it in the wash with my daughter's coat, the girls played outside.
