The pornstar look

PinkbicyclesinBerlin · 17/04/2018 12:22

I know, I know we should not be judging each other but the pornstar look? Why would you do that to yourself, over inflated boobs, over inflated lips what is it about it that appeals to some women. I presume men are attracted to it because it screams sexually interesting but I cannot understand why women are drawn to it. AIBU

Problem is thecat that some people aren't prepared to see the difference between criticising the pressure on women, and criticising individual women themselves.

Makes this debate impossible, usually.

Mydoghatesthebath · 17/04/2018 16:26

Who are the they other women making equally valid choices as you go but you dissaprove and patronise as the silly things clearky don’t understand to be a true feminist you must all agree with us.

Pathetic.

Mighy! Oh dear don’t you know you are hysterical now you don’t agree with the party line.
Ignore you talk complete sense.

Jees who needs men patronising us when this lot do their job for them.

Mydoghatesthebath · 17/04/2018 16:28

By definition saying some women are too influenced by societies view of them you are patronising them and belittling their choices.

I wouldn’t be seen dead without slap on outside the house and hair nice so fucking what.

JacquesHammer · 17/04/2018 16:28

Christ on a bike there have been some revolting threads on MN in the last few days, all criticising women for something.

So on this delight we have people suggesting other women are thick because of how they dress/decide to modify their body.

We've had men coming on and saying "well I don't find these women attractive" - aren't we lucky we have their validation on this thread.

Sheesh.

nadinexxx · 17/04/2018 16:29

i haven't read past the second page so apologies if it's already been said but I think the OP is saying why are more and more young women wanting the overly plastic big bum big lips perfect nose look, they all look like sex dolls which is comical to me as we're supposed to be in a time where we are more equal to men in many ways and that whole look to me in my opinion is catering towards what a typical man wants. i know I'm generalising but that's what I think.

It's all Kim Kardashians fault reallyGrin

sadsparticus · 17/04/2018 16:31

I don't know who you're disagreeing with Mydog but I would never dream of criticising any woman or group of women for how they present themselves. As I would expect not to be criticised.

Criticise society that tells them they're not good enough how they look naturally? Damn fucking right, and I'm sure you would too.

sadsparticus · 17/04/2018 16:32

It's not a difficult distinction to make surely?

RoadToRivendell · 17/04/2018 16:33

I assume we all agree that there should be no societal pressure on women to look a certain way (whatever that is). Don't we?

Well, I guess, but I think this is entirely unrealistic given that most women want to have sex and eventually procreate with men, and men are programmed to seek women having a relatively consistent set of features that indicate youth, health, and fertility.

Personally, I hate this particular look and am guilty of assuming that these women are a bit dim. I do aim to resist this impulse - equally, I'm aware that others may pity my predictably middle-class inclinations (I don't mind).

I agree that the prevailing feminist ideology can veery towards patronising where this is concerned (as evidenced on this very thread).

idobelieveinfairies86 · 17/04/2018 16:39

@dd43 the OP quite clear said big boobs, lips etc and when questioned on whether she meant just surgically or naturally as well she said no woman looks like that naturally. Well they do, I DO. Granted I don't have the Angelina lips but they aren't thin either but the pic of the woman in the clothes shop is very similar to me minus the lips and the tan but I've had no surgery what so ever.

So yes I will take offense because actually it's not the first time ive been "accused" of having surgery to make myself look like some1 in the sex industry (this is the first time porn star has been used thou it's usually pole dancer).
I dont give a shit if i look like a porn star or whatever, but it IS degrading, offensive and disgusting to pass comment on someone based on how they look whether it's natural or not especially from other woman. It took me 10 years to feel even slightly comfortable in the body I was blessed with because men would look (even when i was only 13/14) and some would comment AND now we have it from women as well? I call bullshit. It is not to be tolerated. Have your opinions by all means, they are yours after all but keep it to yourself!

thecatsthecats · 17/04/2018 16:39

@limoncello84 - because I have a large number of female friends, a number of whom have either a) talked at length about the need to look presentable (shaved legs, made up face, treated hair) or b) have unfortunately criticised women for not doing those things, and c) have evaluated their personal appearance as a critical factor in getting/keeping a boyfriend.

I have also read plenty enough articles in magazines that detail '15 simple steps for easy maintenance nails' - as if 15 steps etc were a reasonable amount of effort to put into a part of one's fucking fingernails.

I haven't just pulled it out of my arse. Let's look at the opposite situation - that there are somehow NO women who are affected by beauty pressures and the normalisation of certain beauty standards. Why would you believe that to be the case?

It's not even overt pressure, but normalisation of spending. Put it another way - almost all human beings wear clothes to go about their daily business. Even in summer, when most would probably be physically more comfortable (though prone to burning). Why? Because it is seen as normal. So the girl who goes for haircuts and salon visits and gets make up presents from an early age just sees it as the norm - not a choice that is made. Same as farming children often end up as farmers, and any other social norm that is adopted isn't even noticed. But that means half the population are automatically opted into an expectation that has no basis in need, that costs an extortionate amount of money and time, and that is related to other issues of feminism - as highlighted by this thread.

SoftCentreHardShell · 17/04/2018 16:41

It's not rocket science is it?

The whole heterosexual porn industry is based around what the majority of men find sexually attractive. It's a business and it makes sense to make the content appealing to the mass market.

Plenty of women want to be attractive to men - for many varied reasons - some want a partner to marry/have children with - some want a financial provider - some just want sex.

If a woman is looking to be attractive to a man, it makes sense that some women will go for a look at that has been mass market tested.

wizzywig · 17/04/2018 16:42

What i find odd/weird is that the uber groomed look is very very popular in the arab world. I remember going out there 20 years ago and the sculpted sharpie eyebrows and airbrushed look was everywhere. This was on females who were covered head to toe in black, hair covered etc but their faces were the only thing on show. I guess the footballers wives holidaying in dubai are following that trend

big boobs and big lips isnt what I assumed OP meant by pornstar look. I assumed she meant dramatically surgically enhanced to give an unnatural look such as i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2017/12/21/18/478179E400000578-0-image-m-20_1513879754328.jpg

Of course in actual porn, there isnt usually a particular look, as people are into all sorts, and this particular look is niche, but i assumed that was what was meant by pornstar look, and what i was referring to when i said i thought it meant they had sexually objectified themselves

Where I’m from it’s very much a status symbol; it’s a show of wealth rather than beauty and most women do it to show off to other women rather than to please men.
Beauty standards are funny because the more you’re around certain looks the more you think they’re attractive so in some circles things are seen as attractive that are hideous in others.

I understand the feminist critique of it and I agree that normalising harmful behaviours and unobtainable beauty standards harms women as a whole.
But then again on an individual level if I won the lottery I’d have hair extensions down my back, breast implants and my teeth whitened faster than you can say Camelot.

sadsparticus · 17/04/2018 16:53

I take it back, it clearly is impossible to discuss the pressure placed on women.

The backlash against feminism is so strong and effective it blows my mind.

Bluntness100 · 17/04/2018 16:56

Well this went down hill fast.

Bottom line is what we already know.

Group 1. Some women will judge other women for looking a way they personally disapprove of.
Group 2. Other women think live and let live and I'm not going to judge anyone and just gets on with it.

Group 1. So the plump middle aged woman shakes her grey haired head and purses her lips in her un made up face. In her baggy clothes she tuts loudly at the women she thinks looks like a sex doll, and says "good god, why would you want to look like that, look at the state of you, I don't understand it"

In return the "sex doll" doll woman looks back and says "good god, why would uou want to look like that, look at the state of you, I don't understand it"..

Judge on ladies.

The rest of us in group 2 just smile and get on with our lives and hope others do the same.

GodYouMakeMeCringe · 17/04/2018 16:57

The idea that this thread would have had excellent 'debate' in FWR is hilarious.

A few years ago maybe but now it would probably get a handful of responses as it isn't a trans thread.

idobelieveinfairies86 · 17/04/2018 17:00

@bumblefuddle are you my mum??? Your dd sounds like she's experienced alot, I'm so sorry she's had to go through that.
Seriously thou you tell her that she is who she is. You support her and you stick up for her. You makes sure she knows that other people's comments or opinions mean nothing because we are all different. Just because a few may stare at her or snigger doesn't mean that every1 will be thinking the same things. And if she struggles with mh because of other people like I did then get her help. Don't let her suffer for 10 years because as much as it doesn't bother me as much as it did not all the damage can be undone and I am not the same person I was 10 years ago.
xx

Ivebeenaroundtheblock · 17/04/2018 17:00

SoftCentreHardShell has it spot on. Very few come by this look naturally. It’s a reflection of insecurity. And a look that puts you in dangerous situations.

YoloSwaggins · 17/04/2018 17:02

This thread is ridiculous.

So when a woman dresses hyper-sexually and is insecure with her natural hair/lips/breasts and gets them enhanced, it's her choice! U go gurl! Freedom! Totally not influenced by media and society!

Whereas on the porn thread, there were literally women saying they had freely chosen sex work, and knew women who enjoyed and chose sex work, yet all the responses were patronising "You can't enjoy it really, you were just coerced, you're just a victim, no happy person would choose porn".

So are women free to choose to "pander" to the male gaze and dress sexually, do sex work etc.....or not? Fucking decide.
