Really selfish woman in Cafe today - need to vent!

DD(2) on Easter holiday. Took her for a day shopping. Halfway through stop at a well know coffee shop for a treat. It was very busy and as we were queuing we were both looking around for a free table. All full except one in a corner which had 3 chairs, two of which had shopping bags on. People being served - lots with kids - walking round and round trying to find a space. We'd been queuing a long time, but I hadn't sent DD to 'bags' a space, partly because I didn't think it was fair to those in front of us, and partly because I know Mumsnetters feelings about doing this ;)

Woman in front of me gets served and takes her tray to the table with the shopping bags. She is about 60, and as far as I can see has no mobility/health issues to prevent her walking round searching for a table ONCE SHE HAS BEEN SERVED.
I am about to make a point and sit on the third chair when a two seated table becomes free nearby so DD and I sit there. Other people are still searching for seats. CF woman then puts one of the bags on the floor, and sits on that chair. Leaves the other bag on a chair and then TAKES HER COAT OFF AND PUTS IT OVER THE BACK OF THE LAST REMAINING CHAIR! I thought CF but maybe she was waiting for a friend. But no, DD and I were there 30 to 40 minutes in which time she had a drink and a sandwich and read the DMail cover to cover to pretend she didn't notice there were no seats. She was still there when we left.

AIBU to think that the cafe staff should have either stopped her 'reserving' a table in the first place or at least asked her to remove her things from the free seats so others could sit down?

Disclaimer: We're not halfway through the holidays yet and I am grumpy.

I don't think it's bad to reserve tables if it's busy. Also people are capable asking her to move bags if they need too

Bunchofdaffodils · 12/04/2018 19:46

The front of some people (hint of jealousy, as I’m a mouse!). She wanted space and relaxation as wasn’t afraid to play dirty to get it. That’s life I’m afraid!

52FestiveRoad · 12/04/2018 19:47

You were forty minutes in a coffee shop? Shock Blimey, I can never eke out my coffee shop visit to be more than 25 at the most Maybe you could have got moving quicker to free up some seats if it was so busy

Davros · 12/04/2018 19:50

I would have just asked her to move her bag(s) as I do on the tube or bus

SmileyBird · 12/04/2018 19:50

Sounds like a bit of a non event really.

Youcanttasteracism · 12/04/2018 19:50

I wouldnt want to share my table with random people to be honest. If a cafe looks busy from the outside and I think I'll struggle to get a table then I just don't go there.

I would be pissed off if random people wanted to join my table.

SaucyJack · 12/04/2018 19:54

Meh. More fool anyone who pays for a meal without having anywhere to sit.

Just sit outside with a flask. I don't get the love for chain coffee stores tho. Greasy, tasteless toasted sandwiches are not in my hierarchy of needs.

Easyonthetonic · 12/04/2018 19:59

People do this on buses, trains, cafes. It’s annoying but you can ask them to move stuff.

Well done getting in the Daily Mail reference for indication of the lowest form of life.

pictish · 12/04/2018 20:00

Err yeah...I’d do that. I wouldn’t want anyone else at my table either.

Crunchymum · 12/04/2018 20:02

Course she was reading the Daily Mail cover to cover as well as hogging a table Hmm

Creambun2 · 12/04/2018 20:03

As if staff have got time to do this when as you they were serving customers. People who queue up in "hope" and buy eat in stuff in busy places are mad tbh.

hammeringinmyhead · 12/04/2018 20:04

I was in a cafe several times over the last few days, on holiday in the US. Every time DH queued and I bagged a table. shrug

I really hate sharing a table when I'm on my own especially with 2 people nattering away. But I would have agreed if asked.

FuzzyCustard · 12/04/2018 20:06

She was SIXTY??? How dare she?
(Irrelevant ageist information)

pictish · 12/04/2018 20:06

I would also leave a coffee shop or cafe if it was apparent that getting a seat was in question.
I’m all for pre-bagging tables. Common sense. Otherwise you’re standing up with your scone and flat white...which is just stupid.

Nothisispatrick · 12/04/2018 20:07

Why would you queue up for drinks and food then have no where to sit. And I wouldn't want to share my table either, just go somewhere else if it's that busy.

JennyJames · 12/04/2018 20:09

Meh. More fool anyone who pays for a meal without having anywhere to sit.

This.

Alittlesandwich · 12/04/2018 20:10

Seriously? Is that all you have to concern yourself with?

Sheesh.

ForalltheSaints · 12/04/2018 20:10

She reads the Paper that Supported the Blackshirts. You could have embarrassed her about that.

PoorYorick · 12/04/2018 20:11

I've got absolutely no problem politely asking someone to move their bag off a chair so I can sit down. Cafe, train, anywhere. If they seem to be alone, the place is busy and their fucking bag has a chair, I will happily ask if I can have it.

And I have never, ever been refused.

PuppyMonkey · 12/04/2018 20:13

Ive struggled to follow this, am I the only one? Blush

There were three chairs? Was there another person sitting there too then?

Didn’t she just put her shopping bags down there because otherwise she wouldn’t have been able to carry the tray?

AnnieAnoniMouser · 12/04/2018 20:13

I have no problem with someone ‘reserving’ a table for when they have been served & no one is obliged to share a table in a cafe.

I am happy to offer someone a seat at my table, but they’d get told to move if they just sat down (at a small table).

If it was so busy do you think your own behaviour was acceptable?

VladmirsPoutine · 12/04/2018 20:15

She was about 60 AND reading the Daily Mail! Ye gods!

What I never understand about these sorts of threads is what people expect to happen. Do you think in a busy cafe a table will magically present itself upon you having paid for your food and wandering around holding tray in hand. Why not look for a less busy place or get food/drinks to go.

MumofBoysx2 · 12/04/2018 20:20

I don't think it is wrong to reserve a table, because personally if I couldn't sit then I wouldn't order drinks/food and especially if it is a quick-serve place then very soon you would be eating/drinking. But I think it is wrong to reserve a whole table if you are at a restaurant/cafe on your own! Cheeky mare.

BlondeB83 · 12/04/2018 20:21

It doesn’t sound all that busy to be honest, sounds like a non-event.

SaucyJack · 12/04/2018 20:24

I reckon about 99.9% of these busy cafe threads can be summed up by this Kilroy-Silk classic.
