To think Mumsnet is OBSESSED

I used to read Mumsnet because it was a lot of clever, funny women talking about stuff I was interested in, but it's become a one issue forum. It's exhausting.

I'm grateful for them, it's an important issue with not many places to speak about.

It's discussed on national television nearly every day.

You're on the same side as Piers Morgan.

I'm incredibly grateful to Mumnset for giving us:

  1. A space to talk about this issue.

  2. Not tucking us away in a "trans" section. The correct section for this topic is the Feminist section, although really, these discussions have a place all over the boards.

This is a massive threat to women's rights, and MN is one of the few places we can discuss it without threats, doxxing, abuse or censorship.

CadyHeron · 22/03/2018 20:41

Yeah, see a few weeks ago I'd have said the same thing. I've always stayed away from the feminist boards, found them boring.
The amount of trans threads baffled me too. Until I actually read a bit more into some.
FFS, wake up and see that there is actually something massive going on at the minute.
Self ID is what's getting everyone wound up. Not actual transitioned people.
If you're a woman, it's actually important and engaging your brain over.

PiggyPoos · 22/03/2018 20:41

How do you know it's the wrong side of history?

Have you got a time machine?

Wait till some of these kids start suing people.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 22/03/2018 20:41

And no it should not be lumped into one sub forum. There are many issues here regarding self ID and sex based rights that need to be heard in different areas. There are legal, safeguarding, LGB, feminist, marriage, language, health and many more issues - it is unfair to close people off from accessing the expertise of other people in different areas of MN because their thread has a self ID slant.
If you don’t want to read it, don’t read it. I hide threads I don’t want to see individually if they aren’t for me. Meh.

MrsJoshDun · 22/03/2018 20:42

The last thing MN needs is a trans board. That will upset all the trans people for a start, why should they be segregated away from everyone else?

MissBeehiving · 22/03/2018 20:42

I’m grateful for the T threads too. I wouldn’t have known about the GRA proposals either. But hell, let’s stick to parking threads, and not bother about significant issues, they’re so boring.

Ihatemyclients · 22/03/2018 20:43

@HesterShaw I don't find women's rights boring I find transphobia and trans hysteria boring. Every thread is the same argument made in the same way, always with the same tone of surprise - 'am I the only one who thinks this?'. It is astonishingly tedious if your perspective is outside the echo chamber.

Djnoun · 22/03/2018 20:43

It IS about transphobia. Even here, we've had accusations that a trans woman wouldn't want to quietly get changed, but would want to push their genitals into a child's face.

Of course it is like homophobia. It's exactly the same as saying that gay men shouldn't be allowed in the bathrooms and changing rooms in case they start trying to have sex in there.

You think bullying and denigrating an entire culture of people, calling them rapists and sexual deviants, is ok? No, it's not.

And no one is saying don't discuss it. They're saying have your own topic so the rest of us don't have to be bombarded with your horrible opinions.

HolyGoats · 22/03/2018 20:43

If they were all in one place a lot of people won’t see them. It’s an incredibly important and interesting issue. Just don’t read it if you know what it’s about but irritates you. That’s what I do with all the bloody ‘could I be pregnant?’ threads.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 22/03/2018 20:43

That's the stupidest post I've read in a long time, petmyunicorn.

PiggyPoos · 22/03/2018 20:43

So fucking what about Piers Morgan?

Seriously what a shit point.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 22/03/2018 20:44

I’m pretty sure MN having a trans board would also be deemed hugely transphobic.

FlakyToast · 22/03/2018 20:44

I don't want to be on the side of history that abused children, drugged and castrated them and told them that they had to follow cheap sterotypes of gender in order to be "really" the sex they were born as.

I won't be on the wrong side of history when it comes to ruining women's safe spaces or chances at sport either.

HolyGoats · 22/03/2018 20:44

Djnoun the rape statistics I mentioned earlier - were they not rapists? Or were they not transexuals? Because whatever they were, they weren’t women.

Hypermice · 22/03/2018 20:44

MN is the only place on the web that gender critical feminist can discuss issues like the potential GRA changes without facing torrents of abuse.

The tone of the feminists on here is respectful and in marked contrast to where the hate is actually coming from - the TRA movement. Who repeatedly call for lesbians to be raped if they don’t accept lady penis, punch women at speakers corner to the floor and deliver regular rape and death threats on twitter.

The feminism boards deal with feminist issues. Complaining about that is like having a go at the vegan board and telling them bacon is fabulous. Or that people are obsessed with pushchairs on the pushchair board.

So yes, tough titty

Belphegor · 22/03/2018 20:44

"FFS, wake up and see that there is actually something massive going on at the minute."

Yeah, this. Hide the feminism board if you don't want to engage.

MrsJoshDun · 22/03/2018 20:44

petmyunicorn. How would you feel about having sex with someone with a penis? If as a lesbian you declined such an offer how would you feel about being called a TERF or transphobe for declining? Because that’s what Lily Madigan would call you.

Woodwick · 22/03/2018 20:45

Well funny old thing OP, the cleaver and funny WOMEN of mumsnet care about their rights, the rights of their daughters and the frightening loss of these rights, which feels sadly inevitable now.

You won't be able to call yourself a woman soon, it won't mean anything. I'm thankful to those clever and funny women for making me aware and giving those of who do care about our rights a fighting chance.

PiggyPoos · 22/03/2018 20:45

It's nothing like saying gay men can't go in men's toilets. Nothing at all. Not even one tiny tiny little bit.

Terftastic · 22/03/2018 20:45

I have a feeling MNHQ are under incredible pressure from the outside to curtail our discussions on this, and I'm very pleased they have not caved in.

I've been posting on MN since 2011, and it seems HQ have actually listened to it's users - the people like me, who post on here a lot - rather than caving to pressure from the outside. Long may it continue.

#Long Live Spartacus Wine

Ihatemyclients · 22/03/2018 20:46

At this rate Mumsnet is going to become transnet in no time at all and new site will have to spring up to fill the space mumsnet is supposed to Smile

yawning801 · 22/03/2018 20:46

I did ask for trans threads to stay in Feminism (because I've hidden that board)... I soon regretted it. One of these days I swear I'm going to read through a load of the threads and get a proper opinion once and for all.

Lovesagin · 22/03/2018 20:46

Great isn't it? The issue is getting more 'out there' and people who were blissfully ignorant are now aware of the issues with self id. And you op have helped raise awareness by starting another thread about trans identified people.

Thank you :)

FlakyToast · 22/03/2018 20:46

I have literally read tweets from transwomen saying it's not their fault if they pop a boner in the women's room and that everyone should be polite about it and ignore. The women's room was never about gender. I haven't got one. WHere should I change? It was about vag.
