To think Mumsnet is OBSESSED

I used to read Mumsnet because it was a lot of clever, funny women talking about stuff I was interested in, but it's become a one issue forum. It's exhausting.

It IS about transphobia. Even here, we've had accusations that a trans woman wouldn't want to quietly get changed, but would want to push their genitals into a child's face.

Check again.

That wasn’t the comment.

YoloSwaggins · 22/03/2018 20:46

I can't understand any female who isn't interested in knowing more about self ID.

Because I just DON'T CARE and don't think it's important

MrsJoshDun · 22/03/2018 20:47

And I’m not bothered if I’m on the same side as Piers Morgan on this.

I’m also on the same side as him regarding gun control in America. Or should I say I think American kids getting killed by guns in schools is ok just so I can be on the opposite side to Piers?

BiologyMatters · 22/03/2018 20:47

Id rather be on the side that works to dismantle gender stereotypes that harm both sexes, rather than the side that is seeking to enshrine them in law.

It is astonishingly tedious if your perspective is outside the echo chamber.

Yes but this is the only place on the internet, as has been pointed out many times, where women can talk about their concerns without being threatened and abused. I think that's worth keeping, even if some posters risk being "bored".

rowdywoman1 · 22/03/2018 20:48

Many thanks OP for drawing this to people's attention.
Suggest those who are new to this go and look at some of the threads about women being silenced and decide for themselves:
A few suggestions:

the wrong side of history That is the biggest load of old shite. Time keeps moving, so the past is always history, so how can you be on the ‘wrong side of history’?

SingingTunelessly · 22/03/2018 20:49

I had no idea about the implications of self-id until the MN threads made me think about it. So YABU. It’s shocking that women are being told to shut up and stop being “boring”. DFOD.

AnyFucker · 22/03/2018 20:49

Good post hypermice

CadyHeron · 22/03/2018 20:50

Come to think of it,this is one of a few threads on the same subject I've seen tonight. What with A "it will harm cis women to protest" warning (cis being biological women) and now "AIBU to think MN is obsessed......" bit coincidental that it's Man Friday tomorrow?

MrsJoshDun · 22/03/2018 20:50

No the point is that some men who aren’t transsexual would if self ID was legal simply say they’re a woman to gain access to a female changing room.

So nothing against transsexuals, as such a person isn’t a transsexual.....just a male pervert with no interest in being trans.

That some men would get off on the discomfort most women would experience by seeing such a person walk round a changing room naked.

maxthemartian · 22/03/2018 20:50

Thanks for starting another thread in this subject you can't stand OP 😁

maddiemookins16mum · 22/03/2018 20:50

YANBU, in real life (and I work ft, have different groups of friends, different family, church life), not one single person discusses any of this.

Hypermice · 22/03/2018 20:50

t's discussed on national television nearly every day.

It’s not discussed. At all. Various organs put out very one sided pieces along the lines of ‘look at this poor teenager who has been bullied you are all monsters!’

There’s no discussion of anything. Discussion would be a sober and in depth look at say, what the GRA and self id means for women’s sport (annihilation, in a nutshell.)
or the legal implications of housing Male sex offenders in female prison estate (half of trans prisoners are sex offenders.)
Or the fact that self Id will make data collection on sex offended, equal pay etc impossible to collect, with corresponding knock on effects on equality legislation
Or what the changes will mean to sex as a protected characteristic for example pregnancy or sex discrimination at work

If you think these are not important items to be discussed and debated, or that discussion is hateful, I disagree.

FlakyToast · 22/03/2018 20:50

I used to read Mumsnet because it was a lot of clever, funny women talking about stuff I was interested in, but it's become a one issue forum. It's exhausting.

Isn't it strange that this space on the internet full of witty intelligent women where sexism, racism, homophobia and ablism gets picked up instantly... is saying it's concerned about this one thing? Hmm

Maybe worth considering the possibility that they aren't all bigots?

Maybe consider the higher than average amount of lesbians and bi women who are speaking up against tras? Women who know a bit about "phobias"".

BiologyMatters · 22/03/2018 20:51

This thread is helping to clutter up active convos too Smile

Ihatemyclients · 22/03/2018 20:51

@HesterShaw I don't know if you're right but I hope so. It would be lovely to think that transphobia is gradually becoming unacceptable everywhere. If this is the last refuge for those views then at least it's a sign of progress.

In 50 years time these attitudes towards trans people will be viewed in the same way that homophobia is now. It's only a matter of time. Thanks for reassuring me that the internet is more progressive than I thought Smile

AskBasil · 22/03/2018 20:52

IF you don't like the list of subjects on the feminist boards, you can always start a new thread on there dealing with a feminist issue.

There are plenty to choose from.

Go on, start a thread, I'm sure you'll get some takers.

Djnoun · 22/03/2018 20:52

@JennyJames

The comment above yours is about that exact point.

Do you really think people are so stupid that they can't tell the difference between discussing the issue and making wild, inaccurate, generalisations about how perverted trans people are. Which is cruel. Which is transphobia.

FastandLoose · 22/03/2018 20:53

I think it’s an important issue. You can disagree with some of the viewpoints advanced, but it is a bit silly to suggest that a lot of discussion on a messageboard is really having a negative impact on anything. Scroll on or hide.

I don’t find myself compelled to read half the stuff other people find interesting or important, but I don’t think I should stop them talking about it.

Terftastic · 22/03/2018 20:53

If you find it boring - don't read it. Go to the latest parking thread. Or wedding thread. Always great laughs to be had on classics.

If you want to know more about the issues with self ID legislation and the new gender ideology, that women here want to talk about - then check out this thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3145470-Break-it-down-for-me

wandersail · 22/03/2018 20:53

the only subject the feminist boards seem to be interested in is daily updates from Lily Madigan's twitter feed.

FastandLoose · 22/03/2018 20:53

and I don’t think

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/03/2018 20:53

Great fast moving informative thread OP Grin
