To think Mumsnet is OBSESSED

I used to read Mumsnet because it was a lot of clever, funny women talking about stuff I was interested in, but it's become a one issue forum. It's exhausting.

Because transphobia is so much a sign of intelligence and reflection.

Ha! Thank you for the first laugh of this lovely sunny day.

TheBrilliantMistake · 25/03/2018 12:46

Sick to death of the transphobia accusation.
It's reasoned discussion (but well wide of the original post) about how to deal with those who want to believe they are a woman when they actually aren't.

Most reasonable people (imo) are willing to be polite and respect those people's wishes and call them 'she / her'. They are perfectly willing to let them dress as a woman, as dress is very much a social construct and it really shouldn't matter who wants to wear a skirt etc. They are more than accepting of the need for some people to undergo surgery if they are uncomfortable in their current body. Is it really so bad that they draw the line at ACTUALLY believing someone's a woman, or ACTUALLY letting them into a genuine female space?

I truly want transpeople to have a place where they won't be victimised, or judged for how they want to dress or behave, and I know as a member of the male half of society, we have to open our hearts and minds and be accepting of transpeople (we are not anywhere near there yet). But I also want women to have the same rights as men, and that means their own spaces. True, biological women win by a landslide.

PositivelyPERF · 25/03/2018 12:48

Only on here Circle I don't come across it anywhere else & definitely not in RL, it does seem to be a purely MN obsession, one that IMHO is ruining the site

That’s because our rights to discuss the dangers of self id is shut down almost everywhere else on the internet. Thank fuck MNHQ haven’t capitulated to the bullying TRAs/MRAs.

RockinHippy · 25/03/2018 12:50

rockin look on any online forum/feminist website and you'll see a shitload of stuff about trans issues - except almost exclusively from the other perspective, the endless 'transwomen are women' mantra.

No thanks, the feminist section of here is enough to make me want to roll in my ball breaking feminist assed grave.

I'm just pleased I live in a far more tolerant area, so it's a non issue

Don’t let the door hit your manly ass on the way out.

TheBrilliantMistake · 25/03/2018 12:55

The debate won't really hit home to society at large until our schools are sending out letters and workplace environments are sending out the new policies to every staff member to explain the new regime (should it come to fruition).
Then, and only then, will all hell break loose.
Reminds me of the Poll Tax in the late 80's. It's going under the radar (for now).

As some have suggested, when you try to explain the potential consequences to friends, it's often seen as exaggerated or implausible. 'They won't let men in women's rooms, don't be so silly'. That's pretty much the reaction I've had when I've mentioned it, although a few teachers have started to cotton on to the potential chaos.

SuitedandBooted · 25/03/2018 12:56

RockinHippy,

This subject is basically not up for discussion in many places, because it is not allowed, unless you follow the "transwomen are women" mantra

Articles in newspapers are few and far between , and it they are there, comments, are rarely allowed. If they are, they are heavily moderated. An article run in the Daily Mail, for example, and the first to cover Swim England's policy changes only published THREE comments. The ManFriday one was allowed more, but again they are always moderated.

The Guardian is particularly bad. This demonstrates their position; they ran an article about a poor, misunderstood Transwomen who wanted to be moved to a women's' prison, (there was a concerted campaign to support him on social media and in other articles). They neglected to mention that the man in question was a dangerous sexual predator, who liked to break into houses, put on teenage girls underwear, and have a wank. These details were only sparingly added after a storm of protest.

There is an agenda here, and it does not favour women.

DeleteOrDecay · 25/03/2018 12:56

That's because most other sites shut down discussion regarding trans issues for fear of being seen as 'transphobic'. It's not an obsession, mn is one of the only places online that allows an open discussion on the subject.

If you feel that discussing these issues is ruining the site for you then that's a shame but It is important, far more important than the latest parking or mil thread - which there are plenty of if you look past active threads.

No thanks, the feminist section of here is enough to make me want to roll in my ball breaking feminist assed grave.

What a load of old balls.
90% of the feminists here have been great to read. I've had a run-in with a couple at most, and that's what would happen on any forum. I don't agree with every assertion they make (and they often don't agree amongst themselves on some points), but come on, lumping them into one large collective of pain in nonsense.

BarrackerBarmer · 25/03/2018 13:02

Barracker, would you really refuse to refer to Jan Morris as she?

yes.

And Miranda Yardley, who I respect and like.

I can't unknow that they are male.
Its entirely possible that I might like and respect them a great deal more than certain other men, and I will go to some lengths to avoid hurting their feelings if I feasibly can.
But I'm done denying reality to spare the feelings of men, even wonderful men, who would prefer I pretended they were women, because the cost of that whole 'courtesy' is too great for actual women to bear. I am literally dealing with the consequences every day of the entire "oh, can't you just pretend for these people" ethos.

And, contrary to a pp, pronouns in English reflect sex not gender. They predate any of this pomo nonsense.

Is it so shocking for a woman to just say 'No'?
Really?

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 25/03/2018 13:03

No thanks, the feminist section of here is enough to make me want to roll in my ball breaking feminist assed grave

Jesus, are you dead, even?

Or like transdead? Transalive?

PositivelyPERF · 25/03/2018 13:04

Is it so shocking for a woman to just say 'No'?
Really?

Yes, because only a men can say no and no one questions it. Women should be nice and inclusive. Did you not read the memo?

I agree with everything you’ve said, BTY.

bigKiteFlying · 25/03/2018 13:04

I find it only comes up in in RL when there is an odd mainstream media article - it's quiet odd when you realise how quiet the media has been on this issue.

Then I'm afraid however the article is slanted the response isn't supportive of the trans position - incredulity that anyone could think it reasonable is usually the response and most people eye roll and assume it's not a real issue.

TerfsUp · 25/03/2018 13:06

It's not as though your comments are constructive or insightful or useful in any way.

PositivelyPERF · 25/03/2018 13:06

ThisIsTheFirstStep don’t be such a zombiephobe. If a zombie 🧟‍♂️ says it’s alive, then it’s alive.

TerfsUp · 25/03/2018 13:07

Jesus, are you dead, even?

I think the poster may be MN's first zombie. Being a zombie is the closest some people get to brains.

TerfsUp · 25/03/2018 13:09

That was a piss-poor flounce. The judges here give it only a '4'.

Terfragette69 · 25/03/2018 13:13

Stop picking on zombies, ya zombie phobic bigots! It's not zombies fault they are zombies, they caught a virus.... Could happen to any one of us... Fucking bigots......... Flounces off to report to MNHQ...........

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 25/03/2018 13:21

I identify as a zombie and I insist I should be allowed to eat your brains, refusing to allow this is zombphobic.

CritEqual · 25/03/2018 13:27

The way this whole debate is framed at the moment is one either has to be bigoted either towards trans people or skeptics. Although I'm a skeptic myself if skepticism is now wrong think then we may as well turn out the lights, shut the doors and close down civilisation itself.

Terfragette69 · 25/03/2018 13:31

I identify as the undead..... Anyone who disagrees with me will incur the wrath of my undead followers who can be found on Twitter in their thousands. We are easily distinguishable from the living by our smell, rotting flesh and paid complexions. We demand the right to enter any dwelling inhabited by the living, (bigots). If you refer to us as living we will be forced to report you for hate crime against the undead, we may actually kill you for it but this will not allow you entry into our club. Our club is only for those undead who repeat our mantra 'undead is the new alive' and so there..........

NoSquirrels · 25/03/2018 14:02

I think the poster may be MN's first zombie

Nooo! Don’t forget the wonderful Candy aka Zombie (RIP, much missed). MN has a proud tradition of supporting zombies and even gave us the Gin emoticon in her honour. Cheers! Gin

NoSquirrels · 25/03/2018 14:03

@Terfragette69 I actually think MN would totally be behind a zombie movement!
