To think Mumsnet is OBSESSED

I used to read Mumsnet because it was a lot of clever, funny women talking about stuff I was interested in, but it's become a one issue forum. It's exhausting.

Barracker, would you really refuse to refer to Jan Morris as she?

Would you refuse to refer to Miranda Yardley as she?

Albadross · 25/03/2018 07:17

I thought Miranda went by 'he' anyway?

GnotherGnu · 25/03/2018 08:42

Interesting that you deflect the question, Lass.

CritEqual · 25/03/2018 08:46

I knew it would be impossible to wade into this without disjointing a nose or two in the process! However if it was not clear from the context when I said contine to use people's preferred pronouns, by definition I was excluding who for whatever reason we're not using them currently. I hope that clears up that point.

RockinHippy · 25/03/2018 09:59

I was just thinking the same thing. There's a whole list of similar threads when I open MN today, tbh, it puts me right off & I don't come here as often as a result as it's the same every time I open my app

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 25/03/2018 10:15

Rockin Don’t you think it’s perhaps because a lot of people want to talk about the topic?

PositivelyPERF · 25/03/2018 10:21

I honestly think that posters that say they hardly come on Mumsnet because of the ‘trans threads’, are full of nonsense and probably trying to convince MNHQ that they should be stopped. I have friends, clients and family members on here now, that joined because it’s the only place that these issues can be discussed. Don’t like the threads, then ignore them and search for threads that interest you. If you don’t know how to do that, then maybe you don’t have the capabilities needed to be online in the first place.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 25/03/2018 10:40

Really PERF?

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 25/03/2018 10:42

rockin so why not start some threads about stuff you ARE interested in?

TERFragetteCity · 25/03/2018 10:45

tbh, it puts me right off & I don't come here as often as a result as it's the same every time I open my app

So instead of thinking 'hold up, why IS everyone so concerned' you just log off? Well, that is of course your prerogative.

Apart from the fact that what people ARE talking about is the removal of your actual legal rights. Weird huh?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/03/2018 10:46

Really PERF

Yes, I have also sent people this way who I believe post (although I can't be certain).

TerfsUp · 25/03/2018 10:50

rockin so why not start some threads about stuff you ARE interested in?

What's the fun in that?

TerfsUp · 25/03/2018 10:51

Don’t you think it’s perhaps because a lot of people want to talk about the topic?

Think? Thinking is hard, y'all. Much easier to whinge.

PositivelyPERF · 25/03/2018 11:14

Really PERF?

Yes.

LassWiADelicateAir · 25/03/2018 11:44

Interesting that you deflect the question, Lass

Eh? Why the snippy comment? I was adding weight to your point. I would not describe Jan Morris as he.

TerfsUp · 25/03/2018 12:22

Jan Morris is not a TRA. She is an intelligent, accomplished woman.

Morris is an 'old-school' transwoman, the kind who transitioned and got on with her life. She does not try to make political capital from what or who she is. She does not go around threatening to kill terfs or insist that mis-gendering her is actual violence.

Bringing her in to this conversation is disrespectful to her and to others like her.

TerfsUp · 25/03/2018 12:23

I thought Miranda went by 'he' anyway?

That's what I thought. But if Yardley prefers she, I am happy to use that, instead.

TheBrilliantMistake · 25/03/2018 12:23

I shouldn't laugh since this is a serious subject, but I've just tickled myself at the thought of those football fans who FEEL like they are footballers, dress as a footballer and wear the full kit as if about to actually play football, but in fact, they are spectators.

I FEEL like I'm a good driver, but wearing a crash helmet, driving gloves, F1 suit and having a fast car isn't going to make me Lewis Hamilton, no matter if I ask everybody to call me Lewis and my polite friends compliment me on my driving ability.

I know it's lighthearted, but there is humour to be found in most serious subjects!

TerfsUp · 25/03/2018 12:25

I know what you mean, TheBrilliantMistake.

I identify as a young, lithe, beautiful, rich supermodel and it is actual violence when someone perceives me to be an overweight, middle-aged woman of average looks.

entropynow · 25/03/2018 12:26

"critical minds"??? Yeah, sure. Because transphobia is so much a sign of intelligence and reflection.

PositivelyPERF · 25/03/2018 12:29

Because transphobia is so much a sign of intelligence and reflection.

Whereas pretending men can magically become women and their dicks become female, is really a sign of intelligence and reflection. 🙄

RockinHippy · 25/03/2018 12:33

Rockin Don’t you think it’s perhaps because a lot of people want to talk about the topic?

Only on here Circle I don't come across it anywhere else & definitely not in RL, it does seem to be a purely MN obsession, one that IMHO is ruining the site

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 25/03/2018 12:34

entrophy

Define transphobia.
Then come back and define the word “woman”.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 25/03/2018 12:36

rockin look on any online forum/feminist website and you'll see a shitload of stuff about trans issues - except almost exclusively from the other perspective, the endless 'transwomen are women' mantra.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 25/03/2018 12:37

Rockin
I’m not disagreeing that you won’t see it anywhere else but I think there are two reasons for that

  1. This debate isn’t out in the wider public yet. When you mention this happening to the majority of people they genuinely think you’re making it up. People aren’t discussing it because they don’t know
  2. The people who do discuss it are being doxed, threatened with murder, assault, rape, actually being assaulted and also being banned for quoting the dictionary.
I don’t feel comfortable having this discussion anywhere else.
