To be refusing to travel in the snow tomorrow?

So tomorrow we are meant to be driving 4 hours across country to get the ferry abroad to a very special birthday party of DHs family.

I understand why it's so important to him.

But the roads outside are literally lethal and the forecast tomorrow is worse.

We would be travelling with 2 small children.

DH is adamant that I'm being ridiculous...that we are driving out of the bad weather and it's much better over in Dover, plus we'll be on mostly motorways.

I keep saying he can't account for other drivers, the kids are going to freeze if there are ferry delays or motorway accidents and overall I just think it's bloody dangerous. My mum's begging us not to go.

Obviously I support him going if he really feels he must. But I really really don't want the children- and therefore me - to go.

AIBU ?

What car are you driving? I would go in my truck but not my BMW.

Willow2017 · 01/03/2018 18:38

Tell him to go on his own your kids are too precious to risk for a bloody birthday.
Has he seen the news? People have died! Multi vehicle pile ups on motorways. People stuck in vehicles for 18 hours.
He is an idiot. Do not go.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/03/2018 18:38

My Dh's family live in Kent, they have 10 inches of snow

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 01/03/2018 18:43

Just remember, if there is an accident on the motorway, you'll be one of the cars stopping emergency services from getting to the people who need their help.

If there's a woman on the motorway in labour who can't get to the hospital, your car will potentially be preventing paramedics from getting to her. A woman gave birth in a car on the M8 during the last lot of heavy snow a few years ago. My BIL was one of the paramedics who couldn't reach her.

Just a couple of things to consider.

I have a 4WD Subaru that's designed for exactly this kind of weather. I would not be driving in your situation.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 01/03/2018 18:44

I drove the motorways yesterday to get to someone we really needed to see. They were absolutely fine.

GothMummy · 01/03/2018 18:48

I think its a ridiculous thing to do, especially taking two children with you. I couldn't get my car out of the village today. Got stuck with wheels spinning.

InvisibleUnicorn · 01/03/2018 18:50

Do you have a 4WD?

How many smaller roads until you get to the motorway?

Both those things would be what I based my decision on.

ForalltheSaints · 01/03/2018 18:50

Given the weather in Kent, YANBU. In such conditions there are a percentage of drivers who are reckless and unfortunately as we treat car licences as a right not a privilege, will be a real risk to you and your family.

InvisibleUnicorn · 01/03/2018 18:52

PS DH drove 150 miles each way practically to Dover today. He was absolutely fine, although he set off before 7am. If the weather forecast doesn't change much, he would do the same tomorrow. But he was driving a 4WD.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/03/2018 18:52

No, its dangerous.

LondonHereICome · 01/03/2018 18:53

Yes. Motorways are fine to drive on..... between the blizzards that is!!

Stay at home. It's not worth it

Kingsclerelass · 01/03/2018 18:56

Is he insane?
The met office has just updated the snow warning for the entire south coast tomorrow.
I gave up today because I live near Tothill where a man died because a lorry jackknifed, jumped the central reservation and hit a van. 2 others are seriously injured.
Your OH is being irresponsible in the extreme. Sorry.

Onedaynamechange · 01/03/2018 18:57

AnchorDownDeepBreath you driving on the motorways yesterday and being fine is irrelevant. Firstly you may have been in a different area and secondly the snow is much worse in most areas today. I cancelled a trip today that I'd have happily done in yesterday's conditions. OP, I would not be driving to Dover tomorrow!

Quartz2208 · 01/03/2018 18:57

Yes its sad but its just not safe show him the stories of people being stuck

Dljlr · 01/03/2018 18:57

I'm 30 mins drive from Dover and I'm going nowhere if I can help it. Why not just do a weather check for the area then show it to him.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 01/03/2018 18:58

Nope, not worth it.

Niceandwarmandhot · 01/03/2018 18:59

Has he seen the pics of the m20?!

YANBU, Op. it's a shame but better safe than very sorry, given whereabouts in the country you are/need to get to.

Iruka · 01/03/2018 19:00

There is no snow in Dover but it is pretty bad just up the road. Not sure what it is like on the other side of the channel though. And it is very windy

RosaRosaRose · 01/03/2018 19:00

Will the ferries be sailing?

toasterstrudle · 01/03/2018 19:01

Absolutely don't go. You have to think of the worst case scenario - some people in Glasgow were stuck in their cars for 17 hours. It's not worth it. We were due to travel 4 hours to visit DH's family and DS's grandparents for a birthday but just decided the risk wasn't worth it. Everyone agreed that was the right decision!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/03/2018 19:02

Just seen M27 on the television, its pretty much impassable

juls1888 · 01/03/2018 19:03

We tried to go to Glasgow yesterday afternoon to pick up my new car. We moved 2 motorway exits in 2 hours so turned round and came home. 2 exits further along and we would have been stuck all night with all those poor people. I kept telling my DH it wasn't worth it and to wait and he was kept saying I was being hyper....he changed his tune soon enough!
It isn't the usual hysteria this time, it is proper truly scary shit.

My ex lives in Kent, he was due to see DD this weekend. He's had to cancel as the weather is terrible in Kent.

I wouldn't risk it.

Amanduh · 01/03/2018 19:07

No way.
There is specific advise telling people not to travel and there is a risk of danger to life. There are severe gales as well as the snow.
7 yo girl killed by a driver a few hours ago.
People dead, frozen in cars.
People on the news moaning because they’re stranded after specifically being told DO NOT TRAVEL.
The roads are hell, there’s danger, loads of things are cancelled. Don’t risk it.
