To find ordering in subway stressful

Elizanotlittle · 24/02/2018 13:10

Just asked my oh what we should have for lunch suggested a KFC or a quiche from a local patisserie.

He suggested subway. It gave me the rage.

I actually don't mind the food but the ordering process and all the questions actually raises my anxiety levels. Especially if you want more than one sandwich.

I mean you can't just order and wait you have to constantly speak and wait and the queue always takes ages.

Aibu? Anyone else?

I never go to Subway myself, but isn't there a TV ad for Subway about exactly this, the stress of ordering? I remember because there's a bit that always amuses me when the bloke looks down at a child and says to himself "relax - don't let him get to you"

FingerlingUnderling · 24/02/2018 13:52

I have never eaten at on because the smell of the shop puts me off. I would be bewildered by choice too i think.

Sparklingbrook · 24/02/2018 13:54

The Subway nearest to is in inside the local Spar. So the shop smells like Subway too. Sad

midlifecrash · 24/02/2018 13:55

The smell is the stuff they use for bread, some sort of ultra steam injected Mother's Pride

topcat2014 · 24/02/2018 13:56

The only time I have been was with my line manager (who was Canadian) whilst in Canada.

I just asked for "the same as him" because the whole process seemed too stressful.

YY to Kiosks like McD - I only go in there now they have those.

RazzleDazzle3 · 24/02/2018 13:57

Honestly, if you think that’s bad try natural kitchen (few branches in central London) the menu for hot food is after the food ordering point, so you don’t order hot and then feel regret once you get there. Loads of salad type choices, which are too complicated to understand.

Pricing seems to change frequently. Staff are straight faced and unhelpful. It is super expensive....

Colleague and I love the food though but go infrequently when we are feeling brave enough and rich enough Smile

slashdragon · 24/02/2018 14:01

I hate it too. I have to ask them to
Change their gloves as well as I don't want meaty hands touching veggie sub!

AltheaorDonna · 24/02/2018 14:01

6 inch Bmt with old English cheese on toasted Italian with lettuce onion capsicum and Southwest. Easy. [ grin ]

littlehayleyc · 24/02/2018 14:01

My DH laughs at me for this too. I hate the menu being behind the counter and the pressure building as you find yourself nearing the front of the queue and not having a clue what to order. Also the feeling that everyone else is an expert and there's some sort of unexplained etiquette to it all. McDonalds is the same. Not helped by the fact I don't like the food so it makes it even harder to decide what to get. I only go there under duress when we have to stop at services and the rest of the family consider it a treat so I'm out voted

ginch · 24/02/2018 14:02

I remember working in a sandwich shop years ago and a young man asked for a particular "sandwich", whilst pointing at a filled roll.

I was confused then and I still am.

latedecember1963 · 24/02/2018 14:03

Glad I'm not the only one who feels like this. My first experience of Subway was in The Trafford Centre on busy weekend. Going to text DS2 about this thread as it's gone into family legend how stressful I found having choices shouted at me!

WineIsTheAnswer · 24/02/2018 14:04

I have a subway card that doubles the points or something if I go back within a week. A week?!?! I need a month off at least after ordering. I've never tasted anything but hearty italian because I panic every time I try to order anything different.

Also ordering 2 or more sandwiches is hell. Answering 1000 questions at the same time about 2 different orders is impossible.

I want and option to say is "I would like the chicken and bacon in any way that doesn't make it taste disgusting" or "make it so I can eat and enjoy it at the end and we're good" I really dont care enough if my cheese is toasted or not.

Sparklingbrook · 24/02/2018 14:08

I wonder what they would do if you just said 'surprise me'.

Unfortunately the staff I have encountered in Subway have been very personality-free. Sad
They could be doing massive cross selling if they wanted to with a bit of charisma.

Hairydilemma · 24/02/2018 14:09

I used to find subway v confusing and stressful but the DC love it and so I have succumbed...

I find it a lot easier to always have the same thing (6 inch honey oat with tuna).

‘Cheese and toasted?’ - yes please

Then always add sweetcorn, peppers and lettuce.

‘Any sauce?’ - no thanks

Job done. Much easier than I used to think it was!

callmekitten · 24/02/2018 14:09

DD gets stressed out ordering there but I don't mind. But yes, to those who said that going through a driver through is tough. Now, at the ripe old age of 54, I can manage o.k. but they are stressful.

kalapattar · 24/02/2018 14:10

I wonder how many different combinations of sandwich you can make?

metalmum15 · 24/02/2018 14:11

I find it too fast and furious

This exactly. Dc love Subway so I always take them in when it looks empty, then we have more time to choose. Although I do begrudge paying for a sandwich that I could easily make at home. (My dc are really not that adventurous.)

Agree with pp about the self service machines in McDonald's, I find them much easier than ordering at the counter as everyone here (except me) seems to have fussy choices about what they want /don't want, invariably I forget something and some poor sod ends up with pickles on their burger or something. Much better when you can see it on the screen in front of you. Never use the drive thru either as they always, without fail, mishear you and get something wrong.
Gah. I hate fast food places really.

CadyHeron · 24/02/2018 14:14

I'm going to file this away under 1st world problems if that's ok with everyone?

That's fine by me, I'm full of first world problems Grin

PixelDust · 24/02/2018 14:16

You all get that worked up about going to subway. Really? You just need to order what you want on your sandwich. Its hardly rocket science.

Sandunesandseashells · 24/02/2018 14:17

#metoo! My only visit was a disaster. I asked for a topping and was told it was extra. It wasn't added. I asked again and was told ”I warned you it was more expensive and you didn't reply". I answered "I'm sorry, do I look as if I can't afford it?" Still no topping. I asked a 3rd time. At the till I was given an empty beaker for my drink but she didn't tell me where to find it. I asked and was told "over there" pointing in an Easterly direction. Standing in front of a machine wondering why I can't see a button for my drink, she finally took pity on me and came over to tell me that was the ice machine, drinks were further along. Never again.

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 24/02/2018 14:19

Yanbu at all for all the reasons stated already.

I went to go and get one today as a treat. Walked in and it was so busy meaning I couldn’t see the menu.
I walked straight back out and in to cooplands next door. Much easier Smile

WiseOldHag · 24/02/2018 14:20

Yes - I hate it too. I can't see the menu (need glasses for just the right focal length of the distance I'm viewing). Is there a menu? I don't know - I can't see that far.
Also, I'm hard of hearing and really struggle to understand what is being said in a noisy environment.
In all it's just too stressful.

CadyHeron · 24/02/2018 14:21

Really? You just need to order what you want on your sandwich. Its hardly rocket science

If you don't often go in though and you're bombarded with eleventy million choices I'm prone to hyperbole too it might as well be rocket science. Grin
Just have bread like normal people and not half a dozen different ones, and then I have to see what there is to actually go in the sandwich as you don't get to see the menu board until you're right up in front of it....
cue seasoned Subway veterans behind me tutting or inwardly thinking it's not fuckin' rocket science, lady!"

greendale17 · 24/02/2018 14:21

I will never eat in Subway because the choices and ordering is too complicated for me.

Blimey how do you cope with real life then?

WonderTweek · 24/02/2018 14:22

Oh my gosh, yes! I never eat subway unless someone else brings me some, which never happens anyway, so I never have subway. I like the sandwiches but the process of getting one isn't worth the mental anguish of having to constantly talk to the person and being interrogated about sandwich fillings. I get that it's completely a first world problem but I'm pleased to hear there are others like me. Grin I find it hard enough to order a coffee at Costa with their additional questions on chocolate sprinkles and the like, but Subway is the ultimate no-no.

I love the local Wetherspoons though as they have the app where you can just click on the things that you want, pay for them using the app and someone will bring the stuff over. Everyone is a winner.

(I think it's clear that I have anxiety.)
