I have ginger hair. Long, lustrous ginger hair.

Not auburn, or anything like that... it's ginger. GINGER.

Lovely long ginger tresses that shine like copper in the sun.

People actually gasp in awestruck admiration as I trot past, my long ginger hair flowing out behind me like a mane of fire.

So.

I was having a coffee with a friend the other day, when they said, apropos of nothing, 'Oh, you're hair's not really ginger, you know, it's.... [and i can barely bring myself to type the words].... STRAWBERRY BLONDE.'

So I killed them.

I had more orange hair when I was born, but growing up, it turned titian/auburn colour.

I'm going white now though. Sad

I was actually wondering what people thought about red hair in Spain. We went to Barcelona last year and I felt like I was getting some really weird looks from the locals. Not hostile or anything (if I had a pound for every time someone had shouted abuse at me in the street in the UK, had guys in clubs come up behind me with lighters and threaten to set fire to me or been called a 'ginger minger' by people online, I'd be a very very rich woman so I have a bit of a radar for that now!) but just really curious! It wasn't unpleasant but I did come away wondering what they were thinking when I wandered past! :)

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 17/02/2018 14:17

The vast majority of Spaniards have black hair.

Red is spectacularly rare there, so people don't encounter 'real life' redheads on a daily basis.

They would have been very curious and wondering if it was your true colour.

Catinthebath · 17/02/2018 14:21

My mum was ginger. Ginger is a fabulous word, it’s lovely to enunciate slowly, is a wonderful tasting and scented spice. Hair that is red is beautiful and most definitely deserves the glory of being described as ginger.

My father had beautiful ginger hair andmy son has inherited his gorgeous, thick ginger locks.

DD has her father's colouring and is blonde with a hint of red in the winter. DH's beard grows in ginger despite being very blonde on top which is always interesting.

I've spent 15 years dying my once gorgeous auburn and now mousey brown hair shades of blonde, ginger, red and dark brown!

GertNBert · 17/02/2018 18:08

Some of the photos are more auburn'y than proper 'ginger'. My brother had proper ginger hair as a kid but it dulled down massively as he grew older. It's still a lovely colour but not what I would call ginger. When he was little his eyebrows and eyelashes were ginger too.

It's a shame that it's not ok to use the term ginger as i think it means a different colour to red. I can't think of a good replacement word. Proper ginger is orange not red.

milliemolliemou · 17/02/2018 18:25

Red hair in this family too - GF - has only emerged in one GGGS.

As PPs have pointed out - it's rare (2pc of world population, mostly concentrated in ex Nordic populations eg Scots, Irish, northern France not to be confused with the poor sods in Africa with albinism which turns theirs red). Just as green eyes are (allegedly 2pc again). Also recessive.

MY list in gradations

  • strawberry blonde. I'm sorry but it is a thing. Blonde with a red tint. Possibly the result of unfullblooded Nordic tribes who were a tad apologetic.
  • Carrots. The full orange and unmistakeable, which is what my family has usually in the male line.
  • Ginger. Carrots with slight brown. Think Prince Harry. Also confusingly the colour of chestnut horses and not to be confused with strawberry roans (see strawberry blonde above) or dark chestnut horses like Haflingers (see chestnut below)
  • Chestnut or in France chataigne. Glorious deep red and brown chestnut. Quoted in Je t'aime moi non plus ....
  • Deep red, glows in the sunshine. Probably from a bottle from people envying gingers/go to the peace tent at Glastonbury.

Where would you put Nicole Kidman on this list?

Meanwhile, where've you put the bodies OP?

@expertonnothing What colour would you call it then if not ginger? I’ve spent her whole life calling her my little red head! Blush

I have attached more pics as even if she’s not a red head she still has gorgeous hair! Grin

expertonnothing · 17/02/2018 19:50

Oh wow @Kraggle some of them are red and others she looks more golden blonde! Beautiful hair regardless

Kraggle · 17/02/2018 20:54

Grin she is a mystery! She certainly has the firey temper of a redhead I can tell you that!

Goldilocks is certainly appropriate for her at least!

expertonnothing · 17/02/2018 21:04

My DS has really copper coloured hair. I love it. Red hair is so striking

2018SoFarSoGreat · 17/02/2018 21:15

Kraggle that is one amazing head of gorgeous hair. Lucky girl!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 17/02/2018 21:17

Big mistake killing her.
Forensics will discover one of your rare ginger hairs on her clothing and track you down

Thinkingofausername1 · 17/02/2018 21:23

I overheard someone in the Hairdressers say 'I want mine like hers'.

I think blonde hair is way too common these days. WinkWinkI've noticed that more and more red heads are in magazines and tv adverts now, which I think is brilliant!!!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 17/02/2018 21:28

Kraggle your wee lassie is gorgeous

GertNBert · 17/02/2018 21:44

I've a friend who had bright ginger hair when she was younger but now she is in her 60's it's mellowed to the most georgous warm soft strawberry blond. It's really pretty.

Doctroo · 19/02/2018 12:39

I know there is such a thing as strawberry blonde. And other gradations of red (nice list, millie).

But my hair IS GINGER

Calling it strawberry blonde or ANYTHING else is BLASPHEMY and WILL result in VIOLENT DISEMBOWELMENT.

Canters off into the sunset
