To find the virtue- signalling at the Golden Globes vacuous and annoying?

For a start, surely Oprah Winfrey, apparently the 'most powerful woman in Hollywood', must have fully known about the sexual harassment that was happening. As would all of them. I can see why more recent stars wouldn't have wanted to rock the boat by speaking out, but why all the self congratulation on the part of established figures, who could easily have spoken out long before now? It was all like 'hey, check us out, we're so brave'. No you're not, you're a bunch of hypocrites.

Would you prefer them to say nothing now?

DearShirt · 10/01/2018 09:20

I can't see the point of the black dresses. In fact I think it is ridiculous. It is not only utterly trite and meaningless, it is also far too little, far too late.

JeReviens · 10/01/2018 09:20

Nice thread OP. Really nice.

Angry Hmm Angry

Lucydogz · 10/01/2018 09:22

I would like them to have dealt with it effectively and not as a form of smug backslapping.

Lucydogz · 10/01/2018 09:24

Why jereviens ? Do you object to me being nasty about media darlings?

OP posts:
numbereightyone · 10/01/2018 09:25

They couldn't do anything at the time because when people spoke up, their careers were destroyed.

formerbabe · 10/01/2018 09:25

Nice thread OP. Really nice

What's wrong with it?

formerbabe · 10/01/2018 09:26

The whole wearing a black dress thing made me completely cringe.

juliesaway · 10/01/2018 09:26

They are hopeless and virtue signalling for popularity’s sake. Grandstanding bunch of luvvie twats.

What? Speak out against the people who are able to make or break careers? Don't think I would have done that. They are in a safer place to be able to do that now.

Royalfuckup · 10/01/2018 09:34

YY about Kirk Douglas. Especially since it’s been a well known “secret” that he raped a very young Natalie Wood

swingingSixties · 10/01/2018 09:39

Royalfuckup

He was never charged, found guilty or even publicly accused of anything. Why shouldn't he have been "wheeled out"?

Lucydogz

Yes, the whole thing is awful. Hypocritical and virtue signalling.

DearShirt · 10/01/2018 09:50

Because, swinging if Harvey Weinstein was an "open secret" and Kirk Douglas is an "open secret" then what's the difference?

The "standing up for oppressed women by wearing a black Armani dress costing thousands" is just fucking ridiculous.

numbereightyone · 10/01/2018 09:52

It doesn't matter who made the dress or what it costs. The important point was the colour. It was a small gesture but a powerful message to the men that have run Hollywood and have been abusing women for decades.

TabbyMack · 10/01/2018 09:56

Is this supposed to be a serious remark? So, absolutely all persistent rumours must now be true? How utterly ridiculous.

formerbabe · 10/01/2018 09:58

What a load of crap. It's only a powerful message because we live in such a vacuous world where such things are lauded on social media as being more significant than they are.

AmysTiara · 10/01/2018 10:01

I don't see how wearing a black dress was a powerful message.Confused Lots of the women wear black dresses to award shows, it was hardly something bold and original.

ElizabethLemon · 10/01/2018 10:01

It all became irrelevant when known rapist and misogynist Kirk Douglas was wheeled out and applauded.

MuseumOfCurry · 10/01/2018 10:03

Totally agree, OP.

midnightmisssuki · 10/01/2018 10:04

in my country - masses of women wearing black dresses meant someone in their family has just died..... I thought KD was accused rather than proven guilty..... I might be wrong though sorry!

BlindAssassin1 · 10/01/2018 10:07

YANBU it was more nauseating than these award shows normally are.

I very much doubt that those men in control of Hollywood will be shaking in their boots by women wearing black frocks. And is the US so hard up for new political talent that they look to media starlets like Opra?

Lucydogz · 10/01/2018 10:17

Apparently OW should stand for President next time (some people are saying). There's plenty on record about her friendship with Harvey Weistein. Is it credible that she didn't know anything about what he was (allegedly) up to?
By the way, I said before that I can understand why young women (and men) on the way up kept quiet, but there were a lot of women with established careers in that crowd who could easily have spoken out by now.

OP posts:
Royalfuckup · 10/01/2018 10:18

Kirk Douglas was a mega star in his day and owned Hollywood, the entire family is Hollywood royalty.

NW was a young starlet with a very pushy mother determined to make her daughter into a major star.

They would have known it would be the end of Natalie’s career if they ever pressed charges against KD.

Look at what happened to Weinstein’s original accusers. And Kesha. And that was in 2016/7.

Back in the overtly misogynistic 40’s and 50’s, girls - yes, NW was just a 16yo girl at the time - wouldn’t have stood a chance.

DearShirt · 10/01/2018 10:18

A powerful message saying what exactly?

If "everyone" knew about Hw and no one spoke out, and those who didn't speak out are now being criticised.... how is "everyone" knowing about KD and no one speaking out any different?
