For a start, surely Oprah Winfrey, apparently the 'most powerful woman in Hollywood', must have fully known about the sexual harassment that was happening. As would all of them. I can see why more recent stars wouldn't have wanted to rock the boat by speaking out, but why all the self congratulation on the part of established figures, who could easily have spoken out long before now? It was all like 'hey, check us out, we're so brave'. No you're not, you're a bunch of hypocrites.

I'm afraid I don't know Kesha is, but you can't deny that there's many powerful stars, who would have know about this for years, and are established, who could have spoken out well before now.

Awards ceremonies are fashion parades and are beamed out to billions of people around the world. By wearing black, symbolically, it got every news outlet in every country that covered the event talking and commenting on the issue of abuse against women. If that isn't a powerful message, I really don't know what is Confused

Eltonjohnssyrup · 10/01/2018 10:23

Totally. They all covered it up for years then expect to be praised for acknowledging it after they were forced to. And lecturing other people about it? Fuck off. Morally bankrupt wankstains. They'd wear a teapot on their heads and support the monster raving looney party if they thought it would further their careers.

There have been allegations about OW and Naomi Campbell 'feeding' at least one woman to Weinstein pre her speech. And there is a very creepy picture of OW, HW and Rita Ora doing the rounds...

Eltonjohnssyrup · 10/01/2018 10:27

So, absolutely all persistent rumours must now be true? How utterly ridiculous.

But we know that it's true now. And it wasn't just rumours in Hollywood. It was loads of women who'd experienced it warning other people and women who'd had their careers destroyed for rejecting him.

quencher · 10/01/2018 10:27

You mean the Oprah who has been through lots of sexual abuse as child and teen and in her twenties, that Oprah? Hmm

quencher · 10/01/2018 10:29

She has spoken about sexual abuse for years including the reason why she got involved in the making of the movie "precious" because it was similar to her experience. Some people thought it was almost autobiographical

numbereightyone · 10/01/2018 10:30

I hate the way women are being criticised on this thread.

Men held all the cards in Hollywood. They suppressed people's careers who rocked the boat. They raped women, then broke their victims.
Women started to say fuck this and they made a gesture which sent a message of we're not putting up with this any more, and then what? More criticism for swanning around in swanky black frocks and not having 'spoken up' sooner.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 10/01/2018 10:33

Rose West was sexually abused. It doesn't somehow make one permanently morally pure and above reproach.

nancy75 · 10/01/2018 10:35

Quite a few of those wearing black have been very open in their support of the convicted child rapist Roman Polanski. Hypocrites.

quencher · 10/01/2018 10:36

Rose West was sexually abused. It doesn't somehow make one permanently morally pure and above reproach. That is not what I meant. What I am talking about is the way the way the op phrased her post. Like Oprah has taken this opportunity to say something about sexual abuse because it's the it thing now. When in fact she has been talking about it for years.

quencher · 10/01/2018 10:37

It seems like it's still the women to blame on this thread.

agree

swingingSixties · 10/01/2018 10:41

It's sad how now all it takes for a man to be a rapist is for an 'open secret'.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 10/01/2018 10:43

While I don't doubt that Oprah Winfrey is sincere about her abuse you are buying into a very carefully constructed PR narrative designed to present her in the best possible light and make the most money.

When you know something is constructed that way it's always a good idea to question if it's correct or not. In the case of OW we know she had such a close friendship with HW it must have been almost impossible for her not to have some idea what was happening. So perhaps the 'I stand for all women' line sells well, but not so well it could make up for alienating HW.

nancy75 · 10/01/2018 10:45

When women are giving standing ovations to convicted child rapists, or signing petitions asking that convicted child rapists be freed so that they do not have to serve the prison sentence they absconded from, then yes, I will lay blame on those women too.

FindoGask · 10/01/2018 10:45

Did someone just compare Oprah Winfrey to Rose West, or have I started hallucinating?

Davespecifico · 10/01/2018 10:48

You don’t like celebs ‘virtue signalling’. What do you want them to do instead?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 10/01/2018 10:52

No. I pointed out that being a victim of sexual abuse does not mean that you will help others who are victims. I used Rose West as an example, but I could also have used the example of the 'feeder' girls in Rochdale and Rotherham for example. They were abused themselves but still led others into it.

downthestrada · 10/01/2018 10:52

I don't think this one event is going to turn the tide completely, but it helps. Yes, I found the whole thing a bit cringe, but I always think that of award shows and speeches. It may die down like #metoo. But, I think all these small acts help and make things just a little bit harder for men who abuse and take advantage of women.

So hypocritical, speech from Oprah when she’s Weinsteins mate. So much spin, corporate and personal brand glossing and social media press releases. It’s formulaic on any “issue” these days. Light up the Eiffel Tower, create a hashtag, wear a black dress, repeat across all news sites for 24 hours, job done. I suppose readers of MSN or Bing news sites still probably drink it in.

Shadow666 · 10/01/2018 10:56

Kirk Douglas is an alleged rapist and abuser of women

James Franco is an alleged abuser of young women

Gary Oldman accused of beating a previous wife in front of their kids

Ewan McGregor is apparently a chronic cheater and treats women like shit.

Great winners there!

Celticlassie · 10/01/2018 10:57

I hate the phrase 'virtue signalling'. So if you try to stand up for, or help out others (which quite often involves making a public statement) you're 'virtue signalling'. So we should all sit silently in our 'I'm alright, Jack' lives? You're damned if you do and damned if you don't around here.

FindoGask · 10/01/2018 10:59

'virtue signalling' is the new 'political correctness gone mad': the clarion call of the Daily Mail reader.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 10/01/2018 11:06

But if they were concerned with that surely they would have taken a stand before it was revealed rather than after? Only doing it when it's public gives the impression of doing it for appearances sake rather than sincerely.

Remember most of these people will have followed the Weinstein directives of not employing those who stood up to him like Rose McGowan, Mira Sorvino and Rosanna Arquette.

He didn't destroy their careers on his own, but with the complicity of the rest of the industry.
