to be frustrated by plus size bloggers

First of all I am plus size myself but I find the plus size bloggers out there to be really disappointing in terms of the outfits they show and the message they put out.

There are some bloggers who wear clothes that are 2-3 sizes too small either because they think they are that size or because (most likely) they want to show off the fact they are fat because its all they talk about in between their fashion photos. I'd rather just learn about the clothes not to read defensive posts all the time.

And there are other bloggers who wear ridiculously bright clothes, lots of in your face make up and jewellery to seemingly 'hide' the fact that they are plus size.

Where are all the 'normal' plus size bloggers? with normal looking clothes that people would actually wear, that actually fit them, who have an interest in fashion without pushing a particular 'cause' down our throats in every second post?

I quite like becky barnes and arched eyebrow. Their blogs are relatively normal and they are of a similar size / shape to me.

Wannabe Princess is the worst. Nothing personal but her blog comes under the first category above. She doesn't wear clothes that actually fit her or are in any way fashionable. Diamond and Pearls comes under the second category with the OTT make up/jewellery/clothes. Neither of them do plus size people any favours, contrary to what they might think, they just make us more objects of fun.

Can anyone recommend a blogger who promotes clothes people would actually wear and that actually fit?

I really like diamonds and pearls. I don’t dress exactly like her but it gives you ideas for pieces. She looks lovely IMO.
I don’t think any plus size bloggers give plus size people a ‘bad name’. They are dressing for themselves and their fans. I don’t think being so critical is nice.
Also you say they wear the wrong size? I don’t think that’s necessarily true. It’s just some don’t wear clothes that people judge as ‘flattering’ to their shape. So someone with a big belly wearing a fitted dress. If they want to wear any type of clothing I think that’s fine. Restricting plus size women’s fashion choices is shit.
On Instagram and YouTube there’s all types of plus size fashionistas. I’m sure you can find some you like.

fcek · 01/01/2018 23:08

I never said I laughed at them, but others do and they don't help matters.

Why wear a belt I wonder? To give the illusion of shape, having a waist? It just creates more bulges and gives the impression the item doesn't fit when it would look much nicer and better fitting without a belt.

I'll check out those instagrammers, thanks.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 01/01/2018 23:30

Because they want to wear a belt? Or they prefer how it looks with it?
Not everything has to be about flattering

WellThisIsShit · 02/01/2018 00:44

Ive made a list of people to look up thanks for this thread :)

screamativemom · 02/01/2018 01:17

I quite like Georgina grogan on she might be loved, her clothes are nice 👍

pigeondujour · 02/01/2018 01:43

I'm not plus size and have nothing to add to that debate that hasn't been said here but I've never found a blogger that totally suits my needs either. I'll find one I like and then they'll Instagram a coat I hate and I'm like, do you even know me at all? (Which they don't, in fairness). I think you have to just pick and choose the bits of any you like and ignore the rest. I tend to prefer smaller bloggers that don't have tens of thousands of followers, but do it alongside a day job; much more likely they'll advertise clothes or ideas that might be within your reach.

CaptainBrickbeard · 02/01/2018 05:30

Hey, plenty of plus size women do have ‘a shape’ and a waist, especially as you’re talking about the 18-20ish range. They don’t need to create an illusion of one with a belt and some outfits look great with a belt. Plus size women aren’t all great big barrels. Your critical tone about other women’s bodies is extremely unpleasant; if you aren’t happy with your own size please don’t project it into everyone else. Clearly you aren’t going to find a plus size blogger that fits your requirements because you don’t like how plus size women look. That’s your problem, not a problem with the people out there blogging.

On the back of this thread, I’ve gone to check out some of the others and I definitely wouldn’t follow the blogs mentioned where there is a big insistence on staying fat. I don’t like anyone prescribing how women should look. But equally, I don’t want someone ashamed of their body apologising for it and trying to disguise it.

traceyturnblatt · 02/01/2018 09:42

@fcek

Because they want to wear a belt?Hmm

Good grief, how is what they are wearing even bothering you?

fcek · 02/01/2018 10:24

I am not projecting my insecurities at all, I am expressing concern that these bloggers are not dressing themselves properly. Too tight, too short, too OTT...it contradicts their whole 'body positive' message if they are denying/hiding their true shape.

I really like hannahwearsasize18 so thanks whoever mentioned her. That's the kind of style/image I like although I think she's taller than me and has less belly.

I like callie thorpe actually. She's much bigger than me, but she usually wears clothes that fit/suit her. Sadly the brands can sometimes be too expensive.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 02/01/2018 10:33

But if you swap that around. Is someone who is underweight and wearing baggy clothes denying their true shape?
It might be too tight or short for you, but not for them.
Not everything is body positive/negative as such, I post insta outfit pics to be helpful, same as I do in a FB group so I will say "got this, comes up big/small in the bust, £X back on quidco, I'm 5ft 10 and it's a good length" etc etc

CaptainBrickbeard · 02/01/2018 10:43

What nonsense! What about beauty bloggers? Are they disguising themselves with make up and hiding their true faces or are they playing around with creating different looks and styles. Or should they only put on nude, natural shades as a smokey eye is just denying your real eye??? Who kn earth are you to judge whether someone is ‘dressing themselves properly’? What’s your definition of ‘too tight’? Is it just something fitted?

NurseButtercup · 02/01/2018 11:15

So a quick round up and summary of your words...if a woman is over a certain dress size, she must not:

Wear a belt
Wear form fitting aka body con dresses
Wear any "tight" clothes that draw attention to her extra proportion's.
Wear loud bright patterns
Wear shorts or short skirts or short dresses
Sequins and lurex are a definite NO
I'm guessing leggings are a big no as well...

Is that about right???

Jesus - kill me now! I do all of the above in my size 18/20 body, I think I look great and I receive compliment's all the time.

However I am aware that I have an unhealthy bmi so I'm working on it.

Op I think your focus should be on figuring out what your personal style is and learning to be happy with your body image. You're not coming across very well in projecting your opinion in how you think women of a certain weight should be dressing their bodies.

itshappening · 02/01/2018 11:29

For me body positivity is not about saying that the weight or size you are at is superior or that you shouldn't change it if you want to. It is saying that whatever your current situation you should not be ashamed of or criticised for your body, and you should not feel the need to disguise it or stop dressing in a fun way. The kind of self hatred many fat women have about their weight actively reinforces low self esteem and poor self care and works against any efforts to lose weight IF
that is what they want.

Personally I am very aware that for me being overweight is not good and affects my health and functioning, however I am grateful to the body positive warriors for showing me that even if I do need to lose weight, I don't have to hide away in the meantime. I find wanting to lose weight for health reasons, but feeling otherwise confident about your size and dressing for fun not to hide yourself, very liberating. Trying to lose weight when you are wearing a sack and feeling ashamed of your weight usually leads to comfort eating!

The more accepting of different body sizes we all are, the freer people will be to change their body size if they feel they need to, in a healthy way. Kindness and tolerance of difference are not barriers to people making good decisions about health, quite the opposite.

I am suspicious of many of the health concern comments as for people who are concerned they seem very insulting and uncaring, they also repeatedly tell bloggers things they already know, and seem to assume that destroying the self worth of a person is a good way to make them take care of themselves. Telling someone they look bad or shouldn't wear certain things has no connection with encouraging them to lose weight. Many people are so programmed to feel the pressure to be thin that they react against pictures of larger people and express their unease as health concern when really it is a mixture of feelings, mostly about themselves.

JuneFromBethesda · 02/01/2018 11:36

Such a miserable and mean-spirited thread. I'm not plus size (I'm size 14 and tall) but I follow several plus size blogs and find it refreshing to see women who aren't the 'standard' size 10-12, who enjoy their clothes and look good in spite of the fact that they don't have what society deems to be an 'acceptable' figure. Like most women I have my own hang-ups about my body and it helps to see how other women deal with theirs and look gorgeous to boot. I don't like everything they wear, occasionally I might think something doesn't suit the person wearing it, but hey, it's their blog, their life and we don't all have exactly the same tastes.

I can add Terrible Tumbles to the list of blogs to read - she's beautiful, stylish and inspiring.

mrsbebe · 02/01/2018 19:46

Hey there! I am one of the bloggers mentioned in this thread (Becky Barnes Blog). Can I firstly say, we are just normal people with a love for fashion, many of whom do this with very little - no payment.

I started my blog 6 years as a mum to a then one year old, I wanted share my style, and hopefully inspire other women. Just because you are fat/plus/obese doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to feel great, and wear amazing clothes. Fact of the matter is, you won’t always love every outfit a blogger wears, we can’t please all of the people all of the time.

I personally am very happy in my own skin, I spent many years fighting to be thin, and tried literally everything including gastric surgery. But I’m still fat, so I’m buggered if I’m going spend the rest of my life hiding away in a black sack.

Keep searching gang, I hope you find some inspiration and a blogger to suit your needs/taste/style.

I am merely here to showcase clothes on a body that might be more familiar to you and advise on the cut, quality, fabric etc. A Which? For fatty fashion if you will. ❤️

HemlockSpartacus · 02/01/2018 20:03

mrsbebe Keep doing what you do, in a world where women are judged no matter how they look we need women like you showing that it's ok to be happy in yourself and have fun doing so. I've loved your style for a long time, and your personality and care for others shines through

mrsbebe · 02/01/2018 20:06

Thank you so much ❤️❤️

Hello ladies,

I'm also one of the bloggers mentioned here!

So the comment @wictional made about me was that I actively hate anyone that wants to lose weight. I thought I'd come on here and tell them and all of you - that's absolutely not the case!

If you want to lose weight, live your best life. Do whatever it is you need to do to be happy - who the hell am I to tell you what to do? But for me personally, and for the people I aim my body-posi posts at, losing weight isn't the only way to feel good about who you are and I think it's important to talk about that. Diet season in particular is mega difficult for body-posi women who are working on loving themselves just as they are - so I write to empower those women. Simple as that, really! I'd never beat someone down if they felt that dieting was for them over body positivity.

Anyway, back to plus size bloggers!

Here's some that haven't been mentioned that I think some of you would like if you check them out! (these are their Instagram handles)

ikiwn - an inbetweenie blogger around a 18/20
chloeincurve_ - she's a size 26ish, really high end stylish lady!
chloepierre_ldn - a size 18, more urban/night out styling
curvycampbell - shes a plus size model, around a size 20
milawears - size 18/20, clean cut street styling
loveleahblog - size 26/28? she's more alternative, sex positive blogger
itsemchannel - size 20/22? laid back styling, also a vlogger

Let me know if you check any of them out, I can suggest loads more too if you're interested! xxx

Whiterabbitears · 02/01/2018 20:24

mrsbebe

I have recently started following plus size bloggers. Its really helped my acceptance of myself to see big girls with confidence and self esteem, its helped me to try and make more of myself. I've punished myself for years by neglecting myself and not feeling like I'm worthy making any effort because Im fat. Please keep up the good work because you have helped me, along with George from FFFB and Diamonds and Pearls Star

Whiterabbitears · 02/01/2018 20:26

My post is aimed at you too lottielamour!

CaptainBrickbeard · 02/01/2018 20:31

Seconding whiterabbit’s post; it isn’t an overstatement for me to say that plus size bloggers have literally changed my life and I wish I’d found them years ago! I’ve wasted a lot of time not feeling confident and not daring to experiment with fashion.

I would have more money if I hadn’t found any of them, though...
