to be frustrated by plus size bloggers

fcek · 31/12/2017 20:37

First of all I am plus size myself but I find the plus size bloggers out there to be really disappointing in terms of the outfits they show and the message they put out.

There are some bloggers who wear clothes that are 2-3 sizes too small either because they think they are that size or because (most likely) they want to show off the fact they are fat because its all they talk about in between their fashion photos. I'd rather just learn about the clothes not to read defensive posts all the time.

And there are other bloggers who wear ridiculously bright clothes, lots of in your face make up and jewellery to seemingly 'hide' the fact that they are plus size.

Where are all the 'normal' plus size bloggers? with normal looking clothes that people would actually wear, that actually fit them, who have an interest in fashion without pushing a particular 'cause' down our throats in every second post?

I quite like becky barnes and arched eyebrow. Their blogs are relatively normal and they are of a similar size / shape to me.

Wannabe Princess is the worst. Nothing personal but her blog comes under the first category above. She doesn't wear clothes that actually fit her or are in any way fashionable. Diamond and Pearls comes under the second category with the OTT make up/jewellery/clothes. Neither of them do plus size people any favours, contrary to what they might think, they just make us more objects of fun.

Can anyone recommend a blogger who promotes clothes people would actually wear and that actually fit?

Bet people would not be bashing the OP if they were criticising thin people

On MN? She'd be deluged by posts about lives blighted by thin-shaming, the impossibility of finding clothes now that a size 6 is what would have been a size 18 20 years ago, and people wondering if they are the only one that thinks we have lost sight of what healthy looks like Grin

(I read aaaaallllll the weight threads on here, they are all the same)

MaisyPops · 01/01/2018 11:22

fcek
I don't think you're shaming at all.
It's just on any thread where size is mentioned the 'everyone picks on fat people' / 'slim people can be unhealthy' lines get trotted out.

It's fine to starr threads bashing shops like H&M and people can pile on about how damaging it is for them to size the way thry do. But if the likes of me turn up and say 'i have been an H&M XS/S for 10 years and in that time I've gained 2 stone so their sizes have been getting larger' then that's not ok because it's much nicer to bitch about retailers than it is to have a discussion about weight.
It's fine to argue that size 6s promote eating disorders but saying sizes in the high 20s into 30s normalises obesity isn't ok.

Unfortunately any thread where reference is made to larger sizes generates the same old defenive responses.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/01/2018 11:34

I'm overweight and occasionally look at sites that make suggestions about clothing for larger women. However, the bloggers are normalising obesity which is really dangerous. I get fed up with overweight people saying "just because someone's skinny doesn't mean they are healthy - I weigh 14 stone and I'm really fit and active blah blah blah". The fact is that the heavier you are the more likely you are to develop health problems.

Tinycitrus · 01/01/2018 11:37

‘Concern trolling’Hmm

Normalising obesity is harmful because being that overweight has real life consequences for health and quality of life.

IndigoMoonFlower · 01/01/2018 12:29

I wouldn't follow anyone who shames people for slimming or making healthy changes, but I would follow a clothing brand I admire that has a range of sizes, including plus size. This way , they are being inclusive of plus sizes. I hate it when you see a gorgeous dress in the shops and find that some designers only go up to size 12 ( and that size 12 is considered large!)
As a plus size person, I'm making healthy changes, but I still want to look good while losing weight. There is a disturbing trend of people "out there" who promote being fat and have no intention of reforming, but I still think they are paid to do this.
If the clothing they are promoting is profiting them, they will try to control their "audience" by keeping them fat. I would definitely question their motives. For all we know they could be wearing a "fatsuit" ?? Not everything you read on the internet is real...In the same way that some models are photoshopped to look thin, I'm sure there are some who are edited to look bigger. This is why I would look around to find clothing I like. Sometimes the WW magazine or Rosemary Conley feature people who have lost a lot of weight and are wearing nice clothes.

GameChanger01 · 01/01/2018 12:40

Just had a look at some... Can't for the life of me understand why people follow this shite! Promotes unhealthy "ideals" and really I would want to follow people I actually want to look like or aspire to

Keletubbie · 01/01/2018 13:21

I have never understood how these people are promoting obesity.

There was no mention of binge eating butter or making sure you do less than 1,000 steps per day. In fact, it was mostly about clothes. The lifestyle stuff was pretty normal - there are work outs and salads as well as duvet days.

As for the outfits being flattering... isn't that just code for 'makes people appear thinner'? I don't think that is why they choose their clothes.

Tessliketrees · 01/01/2018 13:24

I just Google imaged Wannabe Princess and am not seeing the problem.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 01/01/2018 13:38

I get fed up of plus size meaning dress in 1950's style with bright colours, 50's hair and red lipstick. It's getting a bit tedious now.

Chouetted · 01/01/2018 13:40

Emma, could you at least pick a number that's more indicative of NOT being healthy? I weighed 13 and a half stone when I was a healthy teenager doing five hours of step aerobics a week at school and the occasional three mile run for a change. I'll literally never be that healthy or fit again, because my asthma is much worse now.

Oh, I did once hit 12 stone, and a size 14 (so the only time I've been not plus size since I hit 13 years old). I was severely depressed, barely eating, and once winter hit I was so frigging cold all the time that I never want to be that weight or clothes size again. It was the very opposite of being healthy.

I'm 16 stone now and I'm very overweight, verging on obese, and trying to lose some, but I still don't have large amounts of belly fat, which is supposed to be the more important indicator.

fcek · 01/01/2018 13:51

I'm also not sure wannabeprincess ever wears a bra, which does not help the look of her clothes.

I think you've just proved the point I was making Chouette Hmm

Chouetted · 01/01/2018 15:25

I have? Confused

bridgetreilly · 01/01/2018 16:01

Lines like making 'larger women even more of a laughing stock' are unquestionably fat-shaming, I'm afraid.

OP, why do you think it's okay to laugh at fat women?

bridgetreilly · 01/01/2018 16:02

I didn't really come on here to fat shame but it does upset me when I see these bloggers wearing outfits that just don't suit them.

Why are you so invested in what other people wear? People you don't even know, for that matter.

rubybleu · 01/01/2018 16:17

14 stone isn’t healthy for most women. I’m on the taller side at 5’9” & 14 stone gives me a BMI at the low end of obese. Anyone shorter than me is well into the obese BMI range.

traceyturnblatt · 01/01/2018 16:27

@fcek who cares if she wears a bra or not?

It's her choice, if she wants to wear a corset, bra or pair of sieves then it's up to her.

DustandRubble · 01/01/2018 16:28

You could try helenwearsasize18 on Instagram. She definitely wears clothes that fit her and very nice ones. Unfortunately her body shape is nothing like mine or I would borrow more of her looks.

Sparklesocks · 01/01/2018 16:32

I think she wears bras, but she has a very large bust so they’re never going to look like pert B cups are they?
I also don’t approve of slagging off women’s bodies tbh.

Chouetted · 01/01/2018 16:42

Oh I agree it's not healthy for most people, but people talk about those sorts of weights as if they're never healthy. Once you go over 6', which isn't a particularly freaky height, it's in the healthy weight range. For me it's just into overweight, but it's well known that the BMI underestimates obesity for short people and overestimates it for tall people.

So those who are five foot and think they are merely overweight may actually be obese...

bridgetreilly · 01/01/2018 16:45

It's also fairly well-known that BMI is a pretty crap measure of general health.

MaisyPops · 01/01/2018 18:02

It's also fairly well-known that BMI is a pretty crap measure of general health
It's not perfect nor does it give a detailed picture of health, but in my experience it's only people who are significantly overweight who like to go on about how BMI means nothing. It's up there with 'but skinny people can have heart attacks so you can't say I'm 8 stone overweight without being a mean fat shamer'.

BMI doesn't work for extreme figures (e.g. athletes who train to bulk out)

For most normal people of a range of sizes it's a fairly good indicator of whether someone's weight is an issue.

E.g. if someone is BMI 17 with a very small frame and otherwise healthy then they are underweight but it's not that thry are super unhealthy. Equally, someone with a broader frame who is BMI 26 but quite active is still a bit overweight but can still be in generally good health.

If you're wandering around with a BMI of 30 then let's not be silly about this, it is not healthy. And it's usually larger people with a need to explain away their weight who trot out the same old kiddig themselves lines

LBOCS2 · 01/01/2018 18:17

@DustandRubble I was about to recommend her too. It's Instagram so literally no "lifestyle" type commentary - she's one half of Scummy Mummies, size 18, takes a pic of what's she's wearing, credits it.

I like a lot of her outfits but tried the velvet jumpsuit she looked fab in and looked like my 18mo but lumpier.

GreyMorning · 01/01/2018 19:58

Wannabe Princess: That's an eye opener!

She doesn't look well and her website seems to be mostly advertising flooring.

codenameduchess · 01/01/2018 21:23

Have you seen Jessontheplus size on Instagram? I get a lot of fashion inspiration from her!
