Broken ankle?

kaytee87 · 25/11/2017 23:25

I think I've broken my ankle, at first I thought it might be sprained but the pain is getting worse and is unbearable even whilst lying still. I know I need to go to hospital but how the hell am i going to get there? I wouldn't be able to manage into a taxi, what do I do??

😱 @3girlsandapooch how are you managing to look after a toddler ?

3girlsandapooch · 21/01/2018 19:26

@ny20005 not very well lol, I have learnt how to pick her up and put her in her high chair etc whilst balancing on one leg. We don't leave the house all day which gives us both cabin fever. I'm just having to find ways of working around things, I'm so looking forward to being able to make a cup of tea and walk to the sofa and sit down and enjoy it :)

kaytee87 · 21/01/2018 19:37

@3girlsandapooch still in cast, hoping to go into a boot on Tuesday. It's a long hard road isn't it!
I hope I can put weight on my foot straight away, fed up being stuck in the house.

I had a private physio apt last week but she said she couldn't do anything for my nerve damage.

She did tell me that I could take boot off at home & try & build up strength & muscle in my leg

I can walk now without crutches at home, although I generally have one as I'm a bit trippy lol

kaytee87 · 22/01/2018 19:19

@ny20005 I'm sorry nothing can be done for the nerve damage, I damaged nerves in my finger after slicing it open with a knife, about a year later it was back to normal - could that happen for you?

Remind me again, how many weeks post break are you?

OP posts:
ny20005 · 22/01/2018 21:17

@kaytee87

I'm just over 8 weeks post break. They've never said nerve function won't come back, it just takes time

I phoned hospital to chase up physio appointment but it was sent to one dept & when I phoned, they hadn't received it 🙄

How are you doing now ?

kaytee87 · 22/01/2018 21:21

I'm 8 weeks post op yesterday, should go into boot tomorrow. It's encouraging to hear that you can mostly manage without crutches although I know all of these injuries are different.

I really want to be able to take my 18mo out by myself, it's so frustrating.

Once cast is off tomorrow I'm going to have a lovely long bath and book an appointment to get the gel polish on my toes changed, it's been on for 2 months 😂

Oh kaytee how bloody exciting!

My cast is off on Thursday. Still really painful. I’m dreading the x Ray and the potential for them to say it needs to be on longer.

I will be exfoliating it like crazy on Friday- I have my brother’s wedding on Saturday!

kaytee87 · 23/01/2018 07:12

@Scarydinosaurs well I was meant to get it off 2 weeks ago and was told another 2 weeks after x-ray so it does happen Sad
Fingers crossed for you though so you can enjoy the wedding!

Scarydinosaurs · 23/01/2018 07:47

Oh I know- they warned me at the last appointment 😩 but hopefully it’s just general soreness that is bothering me.

At the moment my cast is so scabby, it feels as if my spirit animal is Colin from the Brittas Empire.

Scarydinosaurs · 23/01/2018 07:48

What time is your appt @kaytee87? I’ll think healing thoughts for you.

ny20005 · 23/01/2018 07:51

Good luck @kaytee87 ! Hope you get to enjoy your bath & pedicure

@Scarydinosaurs How long post break are you ? My leg only hurt for about 3 weeks but I wasn't in cast, so don't know if that made a difference

kaytee87 · 23/01/2018 07:56

Thanks @ny20005 and @Scarydinosaurs
It's at 10am. Just having breakfast then shower time.
My cast is really clean but it has been replaced 4 times 😂

In a walking boot finally! They found another fracture they hadn’t noticed 😂 a hairline right up my shin but it’s been in cast for 8 weeks doesn’t need any other treatment thankfully.

ny20005 · 23/01/2018 12:57

That's great ! Did you have any pain ??

Have they said you can start to put weight on it ?

kaytee87 · 23/01/2018 13:00

It's not sore, just very very stiff.
I've just to gradually build up the weight I put on it to my own comfort and move my ankle as much as possible. My range of motion is rubbish just now but I suppose that's to be expected.
I go back in 4 weeks time.

OP posts:
kaytee87 · 23/01/2018 13:02

Oh do you mean pain with the hairline? My whole lower leg and ankle hurt so much it was too hard to pin point where the pain was coming from

OP posts:
ny20005 · 23/01/2018 13:25

That's good. Did they give you any exercises to do for your ankle ?

It will get easier to put weight on. I kind of felt like I had to learn to walk without crutches again

popcorneatingmonster · 23/01/2018 13:27

Fantastic news. So pleased for you!
Did they refer to physiotherapy dept or recommend any exercises for you? I found the physios were really helpful so I'd recommend getting a referral/self referring if possible (I was referred from fracture clinic, but they also accept self-referral here).
I found that doing the exercises made a lot of difference to developing range of movement & helped me a lot with worrying about doing it right/not doing any further damage - physios were ace!

UrsulaPandress · 23/01/2018 13:32

I had no physio after I broke my heel.

kaytee87 · 23/01/2018 13:41

He's referred me for physio but said I might not need it by the time it comes through.
No specific exercises, just said to move it as much as possible 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is a bit sick but I'm having fun peeling the old skin off my operation wounds Grin

OP posts:
ny20005 · 23/01/2018 13:57

Ooh I'd love doing that too lol

kaytee87 · 23/01/2018 13:59

I've got my leg on a towel to do it. Dh is wfh this afternoon and is disgusted, he's taken himself off into his study.

Scarydinosaurs · 23/01/2018 14:06

I’m in my sixth week and it still hurts and I need to elevate it 😓 I’m pretty tough too- I wouldn’t say I had a low pain threshold at all.

HOORAY! kaytee it is off! I’m actually thrilled for you ☺️ Hopefully you’ll be back walking on it by Spring.

My cast was never changed- they just ‘added layers’ twice. It’s heavy and gross. I spilt tea down it 😩
