Broken ankle?

kaytee87 · 25/11/2017 23:25

I think I've broken my ankle, at first I thought it might be sprained but the pain is getting worse and is unbearable even whilst lying still. I know I need to go to hospital but how the hell am i going to get there? I wouldn't be able to manage into a taxi, what do I do??

Glad I saw this thread. Sending you sympathy. I broke my ankle 3 weeks ago and on similar journey . Hospital operation plates screws and weeks in bed. Never thought a broken ankle would turn life upside down like this !

ny20005 · 21/12/2017 15:29

Thanks Blunt, I'll give it a go

RarelyInfallible · 21/12/2017 15:43

You have my sympathy OP - I had a small break in my ankle 2 years ago but, because I have low bone density, it took a long time to heal.

A couple of things:

We had a round the world trip planned a month later and were able to do it as I had a moon boot rather than a cast. I had to inject myself with blood thinner before each flight and it was actually fine.

It was my left ankle I broke. After the first week I was allowed to drive an automatic so could drive my husband’s (old soft top with leaking roof) car as it was automatic. We eventually had to sell my manual car though, as months after taking off the moon boot it was still really painful to change gear.

Because of the low bone density, this minor break took 12 months to fully heal. Please take it easy and rest.

The fear kept me from making faster progress. I didn’t break my leg, I had a massive injury, couldn’t walk, got a clot, wasn’t mobile for weeks.

If the consultant says you can weightbear, then try, a tiny bit. I know it’s terrifying, I used my dh as a shield for months going out. Trolleys are marvellous things to lean on, but this is so the wrong time of year to trial them!

How’s the pain now? Are you itchy with codeine? I took anti~histamines to relieve the itchiness. For toilet issues, I found dried apricots worked better than any lactulose.

kaytee87 · 21/12/2017 20:30

at all the other injured people.
Spoke to gp on the phone earlier about my terrible insomnia and how uncomfortable I am just now, she told me to take a diazepam so I'm just considering it. I was trying to detox all of the drugs out of my system but I need sleep Sad

ny20005 · 21/12/2017 20:53

The lack of sleep the first few weeks was what I found the hardest. I couldn't get out of bed & didn't want to disturb dh

I've been sleeping better this week, still waking to turn but not lying awake for hours so that's good.

Take the diazepam, you'll feel so much better having slept & that's half the battle x

sueelleker · 22/12/2017 07:48

Perhaps just take the Tramadol at night. It would help the pain, and also make you drowsy.

kaytee87 · 22/12/2017 08:49

sueelker Im reluctant to go back to taking strong painkillers as I'm not in that much pain - just uncomfortable. I took a diazepam and 2 paracetamol. Slept from 8.30-3 then 6.30-8.15 which was much better than the night before so feel pretty good. Will go to bed later tonight to see if I can sleep on til a more normal time.

kaytee87 · 22/12/2017 08:50

Just noticed I posted at 8.30 last night so it must have been 9 I fell asleep Smile

OP posts:
ny20005 · 22/12/2017 11:07

Glad your sleeping better x

kaytee87 · 22/12/2017 14:41

Just managed to wrap a load of Christmas presents, was uncomfortable trying to get into a position on the bed to do it. Anytime my leg isn't up for any length of time, my toes go purple and leg starts throbbing.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 22/12/2017 14:50

When you come out the cast, there is NOTHING better than a hot bath, scrubbing the leg and getting all the crap off it Grin
Mine felt like it was going to give way for a couple of days after the cast was off but it improved quickly

kaytee87 · 22/12/2017 14:52

Ooh I can't wait @Ollivander84 going to treat myself to some nice scrubs, bubble baths and moisturiser (if I don't get some for Christmas).

OP posts:
ny20005 · 22/12/2017 14:58

I can't wrap anything as can't find any sellotape 😩

My house is like a black hole for the stuff. Ordered 2 rolls of it with Tesco shop a few weeks ago & kids can't remember where they put it

I can't wait to have a bath - am going to try over Christmas if I can build up to taking some weight on my leg

kaytee87 · 22/12/2017 15:02

You can do it @ny20005, just think of how lovely a bath will be.

I'm planning a bath with my limbo cast later as I have enough strength in my other leg and arms to get myself in and out I reckon. Can get myself up off the floor onto one leg so should be fine getting out of the bath.

OP posts:
ny20005 · 22/12/2017 21:23

My bath is really deep & no handles - never thinking of mobility issues !

I'm not sure I could get in, never mind out lol

kaytee87 · 22/12/2017 21:34

Mine too but I'm hopeful Grin will have dh on hand to help incase i have any issues.

OP posts:
AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 22/12/2017 21:38

Blimey! You poor thing. Hope you are on the mend soon.

MissDuke · 22/12/2017 22:19

Glad you are on the mend op. Hope everyone else are ok (DS, dad, grandad) sounds like you are having an incredibly rough year. I hope you are getting plenty of TLC Flowers

Maelstrop · 22/12/2017 22:24

Get one of those anti-slip mats for the bath, they make you feel safer.

I’m sorry to say that several years on, my sleep patterns are still screwed. It might be due to age more than the disruption in hospital, but I’m lucky to get to 4am. Use the diazepam, I’ve got loads of meds stashed from a while back, checked with my friendly pharmacist who said they’re fine past their sell by date.

You can only improve, OP, on and up!

kaytee87 · 23/12/2017 05:29

Been awake since 4 Sad ds woke crying so is now in with me and I can't get back to sleep. On the plus side he's sleeping peacefully now all snuggled into me.
Going to google exercises I can do while in cast.

OP posts:
ny20005 · 23/12/2017 14:36

I did some exercises this morning when my boot was off. Only with a towel under my toes & pull my foot towards me. My tendon really pulls

I've got another hospital apt on 12th so hopefully will get some physio then

kaytee87 · 24/12/2017 07:02

What will happen at your appointment on the 12th @ny20005 do you know?

Tomorrow I will be 4 weeks post op. I'm back at the plaster room on Friday to get my ankle repositioned for the 3rd time and new plaster as it's not in the right position still Sad

Last night I slept from around 10.30-5.45 Smile and the wee one slept in his own bed from 7.30-7 woohoo.

OP posts:
bakingcupcakes · 24/12/2017 07:12

Glad you're sleeping better Kaytee. It's awful when you can't sleep. Nice the baby's gone through aswell. My DS is so excited he doesn't know what to do with himself! Are you all ready for tomorrow?

kaytee87 · 24/12/2017 07:17

How old is your ds @bakingcupcakes?

All organised, we have people coming tonight and tomorrow eek. My poor husband! He's asked his mum to help clean the house today as he has so much to do. I said I can clean the leather suite, polish my dressing table and chest of drawers next to our bed and clean the kitchen table (basically anything that can be done sitting down)
