Broken ankle?

I think I've broken my ankle, at first I thought it might be sprained but the pain is getting worse and is unbearable even whilst lying still. I know I need to go to hospital but how the hell am i going to get there? I wouldn't be able to manage into a taxi, what do I do??

@Scarydinosaurs the nhs are funny about people getting half of their treatment private and half nhs. I'll see if it's possible though as wouldn't mind paying for anything that might help!!

I'm sorry you're still in pain, my ankle still hurts too unless I'm sitting still not moving it. I don't think I've had a day where I've not been in pain since November, it's really wearing me down actually so I know how you feel Thanks

@kaytee87 that’s irritating because it sounds like you need something different as being in pain isn’t something that can go on indefinitely.

Appointment came through today- we’ll see how that goes. It is hurting more each day- I wish I knew for sure what was going on with it! Stupid bones.

I know Sad I'm trying to be patient as I was told it would be 3-6 months before I'd be feeling better and will still get some swelling for 1-2 years if I do too much / fly etc.

kaytee87; after I had my knee replacement I went to aqua exercise classes at my local swimming baths. Do you have one near you that offers anything similar? I found it really helped

kaytee87 · 08/02/2018 06:49

@sueelleker I've a few good pools nearby but only allowed to take my boot off for bathing, sleeping and physio, plus wouldn't be able to get in using crutches as id slip so ironically I will need to wait until I'm better before going Grin

I topped up my NHS physio with private physio. I just didn't mention it to my NHS one...

Oh @kaytee87! I wonder if there is a small private pool near you? Might be someone offering 1-2-1 or smaller classes where it’s easier to get in and out?

@Scarydinosaurs something to look into!

My 18mo has been watching far too much tv recently, I feel so bad that I can't take him out and I struggle with floor play as I'm so achy. Thank god we can afford some nursery so at least he has that stimulation. Honestly worrying that all this tv might affect his developmentBlushHe actually says Peppa more than he says Mama now 🙈

Had more X-rays today and consultant was happy to take my boot off, down to one crutch. It’s really sore and swollen now and I’m walking much slower again so feels like a step backwards just now. He said I might actually need to have the 2 plates & various screws removed if they continue to restrict movement Sad
I forgot to tell him that I’m getting numbness and pins & needles so will mention to physio on Thursday.

When I went to the pool on crutches I put a flannel on the bottom of each crutch and tied it on with a hair bobble, that stopped me from slipping

Hey there, just caught up with this. You're doing extremely well, it is awful when the boot comes off. Scarey as well. I honestly thought I'd be walking funny for ever more. My foot twisted out and I limped really badly. Even after I lost the last crutch I was limping.

It does just take time. I know your injuries were a million times worse than mine, I just had two breaks, no surgery, I did it late August and am now fully running again every morning. I still get thr occasional twinge when it's cold. Who knew that was a real thing. I'm also still a bit weak if I try to walk on tip toes.

I also had very limited range of movement as well. It's the muscles that have wasted. Hopefully they come back and you don't need to get anything removed. Keep doing the exercises. It's dull but it helps.

Honestly. You're doing so well. It just takes a lot of time unfortunately. 💐

Glad to hear you're running again @Bluntness100.

I'm a bit ashamed as I had a bit of a cry to my dh at the dinner table, told him I felt like I'd never get better and that I was fed up being in constant pain. Which is true but I should hold it together better. My 18mo then starting stuffing baked beans into his ears which lightened the mood.

I'm going to go for a long bath and then to bed as I feel wiped out.

I really don't want another operation!!

Don't tell them, then. But I thought that was now something that you were allowed to do? I mean, how can the NHS be against you providing your own treatment?

Crying is normal. It's just frustration. I remember trying to get out the house once, and it was raining hard and we have a long path and steps. I sat on the wall and cried, I just didn't know how I'd make it and was so frustrated.

The added joy was then getting to hospital and having a wet arse and looking like I'd wet myself due to said wall sitting.

It does pass 💐

Yes @Bluntness100 I'm so frustrated with things. Not being able to take my son out by myself being the biggest thing.
Had physio today, was really sore. She said I need to start taking painkillers again or the pain will hold me back Sad
Ds Just gone to bed, I'm going to run myself an Epsom's salt bath then have a hot chocolate. Dh in garage fiddling about with his bike 🙄

Just wanted to update you all and see how my fellow breakees are.
So I’ve done a few months of Physio now, still have swelling and pain and 0• of ankle movement up the way so very restricted. I walk with a limp still and can’t run or jump.
I had a Physio review yesterday and they are sending me back to orthopaedics as there’s nothing more they can do. It looks like i’ll have the metalwork removed to see if that helps.
I really hope it is, it’s wearing me down being in pain so much and upsetting that I can’t keep up with my son and chase him round the park etc. Plus I’ve put on weight Sad
Anyway fingers crossed another op sorts it!

Oh no @kaytee87 !

I'm back to work & after some physio, I've got 95% movement back

Really hope the surgery to take metal work out helps you xx

I had my metal work removed. Ankle feels comifer. 20 years I still cannot run and need pain killers.

Oh I'm sorry to hear you are still in pain. My OH broke his femur three years ago and still has restricted movements and pain. He's having his metal work removed next month, really hope it helps. It's been a long hard three years

Waiting for my op now. One of the screws has snapped and is embedded in my bone so they will need to drill in to get it out. Still probably just day surgery though.
