Broken ankle?

I think I've broken my ankle, at first I thought it might be sprained but the pain is getting worse and is unbearable even whilst lying still. I know I need to go to hospital but how the hell am i going to get there? I wouldn't be able to manage into a taxi, what do I do??

Arghh the skin under my cast is so itchy! I can see round the edges it's all dry and flaky. It's actually stopping me from sleeping tonight.

I'm so thankful to have boot so I can remove it to wash. I had to use an exfoliating mitt the other day as even putting cream in daily, skin was dry & flaky

I've seen others online say that they took antihistamines to stop the itch under the cast x

Ankle repositioned and new cast on yesterday, was agony. Starting to worry about how much pain I will be in trying to move my foot once my cast is off. I will be 5 weeks post op on Monday!

Have a wedding reception at the start of march and have accepted I wont be able to wear heels so have ordered this dress to wear with flat sandals and nice jewellery.

Ouch. Definitely take it slowly. I dropped a trolley Jack on my ankle, huge gash, dragged myself in the house, bandaged myself up. Thought nothing of it.. Bit sore, bit achy. Went to work, lugging PCs about as usual, carrying my babies upstairs, driving etc.

Foot swelled up a bit, quite red.. School nurse "ooh, just bad bruising". Didn't half ache a bit at times. Fast forward a couple of months.. Couldn't raise my foot. Went to the doc, referred for an x-ray, back to the doc "we need to see you urgently"... Walked in..

"When did you break your ankle?".."er.. Surgical, about 30 years ago, it's in the records!"..."no.. This is fresh, less than 4 months ago, clean break".."ooh, ha.. Is THAT what the ache was?".

Referred for nerve conduction tests.."oh, Christ. You've got spinal nerve damage. If you feel anything in your legs, it's probably agonising in reality, how has this never been noticed?!"..Grin I thought it was normal to not notice if someone parked a car on your foot. Heh.

kaytee87 · 30/12/2017 11:30

Omg @daddyorscience you're lucky you went to the docs, could have ended up with all sorts of complications. My dad told me about an old army mate of his that walked on 2 broken legs for weeks Shock

Katy I love that dress!

kaytee87 · 30/12/2017 11:58

Thanks, it's my favourite colour. Think I will have to get it turned up slightly but will see when it arrives. I will wear it on holiday too so a good buy.

Beautiful dress !

daddyorscience · 30/12/2017 15:43

Oh, I have all sorts of complications anyway.. It's not spinal nerve damage..I was chuckling as I explained to the nerve guy..I have cerebral palsy. The issue with my "wiring" is a little further up and a lot more complex.Grin. I can't feel lower body sensation much, or temperature (can burn, don't notice.. Helped IKEA guy carry some furniture in the other day in -2/-3 without a shirt on, to his surprise. Felt like a nice day to me.), Balance and coordination issues etc.

I drive an auto, I'm used to it.. But it's a pain because medically, the rule book often won't apply, quite.Grin

ny20005 · 30/12/2017 23:52

@kaytee87 did they say how long your likely to be in cast for ?

@daddyorscience can't believe you walked around on a broken ankle 😱 I've to go for nerve conduction tests next month 😬

kaytee87 · 31/12/2017 05:04

@ny20005 I think I'm coming out of it on the 9th agw. That will be 6 weeks post op.

OP posts:
daddyorscience · 31/12/2017 11:05

@ny20005 - what are you going to one for? They're quite interesting..I had the wires in my legs, the guy told me to relax...I looked at him, and said "any more relaxed, chap, I'd be dead"..

He pointed to the laptop.."your leg muscles are firing like you're running a marathon. Do they often ache?"..."always have, beer is the only thing that stops it".."oh my god, that must be agony. You've had this for 35 years.. Your brain can't turn your muscles off.. You should have been given medication for this when you were a child!"

So now I'm on nervous system suppressors, to shut my leg muscles off. Its SO nice. Explains why I've always been so tired, and unable to get to even 10st, even though I frankly eat junk.

So now, I'm also medically recommend 6 meals a day, with cream, cheese, cards carbs etc to bring my weight up..Grin

ny20005 · 31/12/2017 15:49

@daddyorscience

I just assumed it would be done at my local hospital but not really sure. I'm back on 12 jan so will find out more then

kaytee87 · 02/01/2018 15:04

@ny20005 how are you getting on with the boot? How much weight can you put on your foot? I'm wondering if I will be able to manage to look after my 17mo without any help once into a boot. I need to be able to pick him up, put him in high chair, get him in and out of cot etc.

OP posts:
ny20005 · 02/01/2018 16:02

I'm just putting weight on it while still walking with both crutches. Its easier to do things as I can now stand to do things

I'm not sure you'd manage a toddler by yourself though 😬

kaytee87 · 02/01/2018 16:21

No, if I will still need crutches I can't manage him all day myself. I'm hating putting my mum & mil out so much. I've paid for an extra half day session at nursery for ds for the next 3 weeks and got both of them a massage voucher to say thanks but still feel bad!

At least I will be able to stand to tidy up wardrobes etc which are an absolute mess with the way everyone's been putting clothes away (disclaimer, my standards may be too high)

OP posts:
ny20005 · 02/01/2018 22:36

Standards can't be maintained I'm afraid. You'll have to let it go until your back on your feet

I can just about keep on top of laundry with kids help but can't iron & dh is really busy so kids have just been wearing clothes creased 😩

kaytee87 · 09/01/2018 14:57

Well today was the day I was meant to be getting my cast off and into a boot. Turns out I never should have been told that and I've been put in another cast for 2 weeks. I'm so disappointed I could cry Sad feeling really depressed about it actually.
The doctor actually said 'it's only another 2 weeks', easy for her to say when it's not her leg that's in cast and it's not her that can't look after her own child.
It's likely to be another 6 weeks from now until I can actually walk.

OP posts:
purpleprincess24 · 10/01/2018 14:03

Oh you poor thing, I completely understand how you feel

One of my surgeries I wasn’t expecting to be put in plaster and thought I’d be able to weight bare, erm no 6 weeks again in plaster

kaytee87 · 10/01/2018 17:52

I was really disappointed @purpleprincess24, had a cry in bed for an hour last night then decided to suck it up. Got no sleep last night at all though as I always find a new cast uncomfortable.

OP posts:
ny20005 · 11/01/2018 18:00

Oh no 😩 I've got my apt tomorrow so I'm hoping to get boot off

Think I'll need some sort of splint for walking & will probably have to continue wearing my nighttime cast 😬

kaytee87 · 11/01/2018 18:49

Good luck for tomorrow @ny20005 let me know how it goes.

OP posts:
Scarydinosaurs · 12/01/2018 05:48

How crappy for you!

I really hope it is more comfortable now.

Good luck today NY

ny20005 · 12/01/2018 22:56

My appointment today was a bit of a waste of time. Doc prodded the break & as it's not sore, said it's healed.

No change to nerves & he said that he doesn't need to see me again until they have nerve conduction results

I've not had apt through yet & doc said waiting time is 18 weeks 😩

He says I can take the boot off but need a splint for dropped foot & only physio can give that. I've to wait on physio & occupational health appointments to be sent by post

I've got another line for 7 weeks 😩 if I don't have physio apt through by next week, I might go private

3girlsandapooch · 21/01/2018 18:12

@kaytee87 how are you getting on now? I slipped and broke my ankle the end if December and it's honestly so bloody hard. I have 3 children with the youngest being 14 months and no one to help in the day, so been having to look after them and it's so frustrating.
