To think zoella is lying

Skip to 33. The calendar that her own company makes she says it's all down to boots and they choose the £50 price. She's been doing products for years and has full ownership of her company. She's not new or anything to releasing products

It's been on sale for two months and it's her name on it and was apparently only sad in the last few days when the backlash started.

Her body language is all off, avoiding eye contact and looking around. She says shes not in it for the money but has a long history of releasing cheap stuff for high prices.

I think she seems naive and a bit clueless - she's relying far too heavily on other people to protect her, rather than taking responsibility and exercising her own judgement and calling out those who are devaluing her brand. I imagine this was organised by another company, and she was simply sent it for approval, and simply didn't do a proper job on quality control because she's too busy being shiny and aspirational.

There was a huge kerfuffle when her book turned out to be ghostwritten, wasn't there? She seems to have learned absolutely nothing from that mistake. I guess she's young, but she doesn't seem to be able to understand that the translation of her fluffy persona into hard merchandise needs careful management.

PompholyxOfUnknownOrigin · 15/11/2017 09:43

Who?

thecatfromjapan · 15/11/2017 09:45

I hope this doesn't turn into an anti-Zoell frenzy, however, with all ire targeted at a woman.

I think I'm taking it as a sobering wake-up call to be more alert to the nature of you-tubers and vloggers.

It's a new phenomenon for me and I realise I need to get up to speed with it as a parent.

Nicknacky · 15/11/2017 09:46

whisky That will be exactly what happened but the dilemma for her is that her name is all over it and she claims it was a year of a labour of love to make it. So if she says "I actually had nothing to do with it" then she risks all of her mechanise not being worth a penny now.

JuneFromBethesda · 15/11/2017 09:47

'My input in this is creative. It's coming up with new ideas, it's new, like, cool packaging concepts, it's new scents, it's new things we can do, and it's like testing formulations, and it's all those things, that's where I get involved in this, and I'm very heavily involved in that, and I love it.'

Really?? There is nothing innovative or ground-breaking about that stupid advent calendar. Unless you count the fact that it has only 12 doors, not 24. That's certainly unusual Hmm

Scabbersley · 15/11/2017 09:48

I tried to rubbish her and her calendar to my 15 year old yesterday. dd said "I like Zoella and I think what she said about anxiety really helped loads of teenagers actually" Me = crushed Blush

whiskyowl · 15/11/2017 09:49

Is it just me or does she look increasingly like a young Louise Redknapp?

GherkinSnatch · 15/11/2017 09:51

MargaretCavendish I think that's where I am too. I'm aware of it, being 28, but not part of it. My SIL is 8 years younger than me, and my pregnancies coincided with two of Anna Saccone's. SIL was more invested in her pregnancies and babies than she was in the arrival of her niece and nephew. Every day she'd be up in her room on her iPad waiting for the latest instalment of their "Family vlog" while actively disengaging with her own family because we have a real life that involves work, school, chores and not a fantasy catalogue life where everything is twinkly and "making memories".

Our nephew (4), according to my BIL, has "his families he watches on Youtube". He's 4. I can't view that sort of investment in a randomer's life as anything other than unhealthy - and the parents allow it!

Heckneck · 15/11/2017 09:51

I get why people are miffed but you know something, business is business. Supply and demand. You don't see people complaining about Disney toys hiked up on eBay exploiting youngsters. If I could sell a product to fans I'd make sure it'd make the most profit it could. Why wouldn't you.

FlowerPot1234 · 15/11/2017 09:52

I have heard of her, read an interview with her (that's 5 wasted minutes of my life I'll never get back..), and am aware of her peculiar popularity.

She says shes not in it for the money
She is 90% in it for the money. The other 10% is ego.

it's all down to Boots, they chose the £50 price
She's lying. She would have set the RRP, she is aware in distributor contracts and negotiations what margin the retailer adds onto her products, as soon as the calendar was sold in Boots she/her company would have checked how it was being presented in the store and they would have seen the price, and from day 1, she would have been receiving data from Boots about sales volumes and revenue.

I do hope this is the end of this vacuous, deceitful waste of space.

SilverySurfer · 15/11/2017 09:53

Well that's ten seconds of my life that I won't get back. I had never heard of her - it's reallyy sad that so many (presumably young) people follow such a vacuous nonentity.

Scabbersley · 15/11/2017 09:54

She would have set the RRP

no she wouldn't unless she is selling it through other channels. If it is a boots exclusive they would have told her what margin they wanted and their proposed retail price based on HER wholesale price.

KyloRensLightsaber · 15/11/2017 09:57

Anyone who knows her knows she doesn’t do this for the money. Apparently.

Why does she sell anything at all then? It’s just bullshit.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/11/2017 09:57

She’s rich as Midas and wants to keep on getting rich so will happily cry crocodile tears to feed her huge ego

I see some ‘freebies to make up for it’ and a competition coming peoples way Hmm

Nicknacky · 15/11/2017 09:57

heck We are all grown ups and understand about business and that items cost far less to make than the sell for.

My issue with her is this pretence that she ISNT doing it for the money, but to give her fans special items that she has put so much love and care into.

If I were her and people were paying me enough to but that flash house at such a young age then yeah, I would probably have done the same.

But morally it's wrong. It isn't just the Calender though, it's so soon after the disaster at the Hello World thing where parents were feeling ripped off. It's two rip offs so soom after each other that is hurting her brand.

SlothMama · 15/11/2017 09:57

It'll be interesting to see if Boots will have a Zoella collection next year, after she's just blamed them for all of the anger!

Albertschair · 15/11/2017 09:58

Of course she learnt from the book debacle.... She learnt she could get away with it. As she will keep doing so now.

And the controversy further promotes her brand. How many of you had never heard of her - now watching some vlogs. And some people will keep watching

SloeSloeQuickQuickGin · 15/11/2017 10:00

Zoella herself wont be setting prices for anything. This is why she has a publicity and marketing team behind her to do this stuff.

The product will be purchased by Boots with a phenomenal mark up if htye are dropping the prce by 50% tomorrow.

Mustang27 · 15/11/2017 10:02

I clicked on this as I thought Zoella was a Nick Jr character. I’m highly disappointed.

KimmySchmidt1 · 15/11/2017 10:03

I massively don't care, but generally speaking giant retailers choose what price to sell their stock at.

She will charge them a wholesale price, which will influence their profit margin.

That is generally how retailing works.

Chikka1971 · 15/11/2017 10:03

The thing that gets me is that even if she is telling the truth and had nothing to do with the pricing and never would have dreamt of charging £50 - then the moment she saw it was on sale for this amount she should have apologised and distances herself from it to her fans. But no.....instead she has been mercilessly plugging it on her YouTube channel for weeks. She was really happy to do that and get her fans to buy it. All until there was a backlash. And NOW she’s “sorry”? Hmmmm Hmm

Mumsiemummy1 · 15/11/2017 10:05

Zoella will most likely have a say in the wholesale price, but not the retail price, so this really isn't directly her fault. It's the way retail works and boots will be making a HUGE markup on this calendar whereas her wholesale profit is likely a drop in the ocean.

Having said that, Thank you to the op for telling us to skip to 33mins, o couldn't have sat through a full 40 minutes of that drivel.

GabsAlot · 15/11/2017 10:08

of cours shs lying just lik that hoo ha with the crappy convention never their fault

TheSpottedZebra · 15/11/2017 10:08

She won't be getting a wholesale price as she's not making nor supplying the thing. She'll get a % of the sales revenue.
