To think zoella is lying

Skip to 33. The calendar that her own company makes she says it's all down to boots and they choose the £50 price. She's been doing products for years and has full ownership of her company. She's not new or anything to releasing products

It's been on sale for two months and it's her name on it and was apparently only sad in the last few days when the backlash started.

Her body language is all off, avoiding eye contact and looking around. She says shes not in it for the money but has a long history of releasing cheap stuff for high prices.

"They do a 3 for 2 offer on all their Xmas stuff so they're already losing the price of every third thing they sell."

reachforthestars do you seriously think Boots lose money on 3for2 and just give away stuff for free? Shock.

No, they make a profit on it. And they unload the tat they can't sell at 50% and then 75% the inflated RRP.

Try googling a 3for2 product that's not rewrapped in their "special" packaging and you will see it selling for 30-40% less everywhere else.

schoolgaterebel · 15/11/2017 11:48

I'm very interested to see if Boots will go anywhere near her in the future after she has given them full blame.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 15/11/2017 11:49

She can't say she is proud of the product - and promote it - then say she is unhappy about the price it is being sold at.

BanyanTree · 15/11/2017 11:49

This is what was in that calendar. It looks like young girls have just bought it because she has her name on it. Personally I would have turned over the box and had a massive larf at the cheek of Boots charging 50 quid for a bunch of stuff I can get in Tiger and Poundland.

The Lifestyle Advent Calendar (contains bauble, confetti, purse, candle 130g, cookie cutter x 2, jotter pad, key ring, pen, room spray 30ml, stickers and votive)

The blogger is upset because it turns out that her audience are not as thick as she thought and have called her out on a totally crap product.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 15/11/2017 11:51

I know this is a fairly pointless post but do people genuinely watch this shit regularly? And if so, why? WHAT is so interesting about her wittering on about what she does in a day?
I'm utterly gobsmacked. Truly. And obviously VERY old.

BanyanTree · 15/11/2017 11:58

I agree Thumb. I don't know who she is. I just clicked on this whilst eating my lunch. It is utter bollocks. I don't even post pictures of myself on facebook (even though I am quite happy with my looks Wink) because I don't feel the need to fish for compliments or feedback on my life. I can't imagine the massive ego one needs to have to post videos and selfies of what you are wearing and what foundation you have on that day so that 1000's of insecure teenagers can tell you how spesh you are.

questionbasket · 15/11/2017 12:00

She isn't sorry at all. If she cared she wouldn't mention letting her fans down as a side note and make everyone sit through 33 minutes of unrelated arrogant silliness beforehand. Cheeky to claim she's just as let down as everyone else. What a strange woman-child.
The price isn't even the issue. People were obviously willing to pay £50. The calendar is shit. It's shit at any price. The issue is how crap it is.

schoolgaterebel · 15/11/2017 12:01

Tweens and young teens love her, especially in the earlier days she would do make up tutorials, make suggestions if her favourite products, baking and home decor ideas. She came across a a nice normal girl with some great ideas to share, very accessible to young teens.

She has jumped on the money making opportunity to endorse products and create her own, brought out 3 books (that she claimed she wrote but it turned out she didn't). Hosts events where fans can meet her (for a fee) and then barely shows her face and refuses to ideal to anyone.

She is now a very successful 27 year old business woman who exploits her fans, she feeds on tweens need to fit in by acquiring 'stuff' that their peers have. Never does anything worthwhile, stand up for any causes and never seen to give anything back.

justforthisthread101 · 15/11/2017 12:02

@GherkinSnatch, I had no idea who Anna Saccone was so just googled. I am just gobsmacked. What the ACTUAL fuck?? Seriously are there more families who do this? I'm completely astounded. I had no idea!!

(I'm Irish btw....and now a bit embarrassed by my nation)

JonSnowsWife · 15/11/2017 12:05

Utter bollocks. As if Boots isn't going to pass it by her first, you know what with being a reputable business and all.

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 15/11/2017 12:05

Twitter is full of talk on her, it's either "she loves her fans sooo much, poor her" or "greedy cow, she's been doing this for years"

Here is a shorter video of her "apology" someone made my heart goes out to anyone that watched any of her last "vlog"

The more I think about this the more I think that it's her not being particularly savvy, a bit lazy and putting too much trust in her brand team.

They will have said 'what do you like about Christmas' and come back with a brief including 'sparkly, fluffy, baking and nice smells' which they will have added in to product and market research to come up with a final product they think will appeal to the target market (clearly at the wrong price point this time!). She doesn't have the knowledge of the market or product development so she trusts the people who do... but when your brand is you, you just can't afford to take the risk of letting someone else be the brand guardian when their targets are commercial and you're just another brand name to them.

JonSnowsWife · 15/11/2017 12:08

Peppy she's a millionaire.

She wouldn't have got there without being savvy.

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 15/11/2017 12:20

She's not particularly savvy, she signed to management and pr that are though.

Was just in the right place at the right time.

No supplier can set retail price. Thanks to competition law, all pricing is at the sole discretion of the retailer.

Suppliers will sometimes recommend an RRP, but this doesn't have to be followed.

Pricing will be set by the retailer in order to get a certain margin/get new people in etc.

Even a whiff of price fixing (routinely checking prices in your retailers, comparing etc.) can be enough these days to have a full investigation come down on you.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 15/11/2017 12:27

I actually don't mind Zoella. She is annoying and her voice has changed a lot over the years. She is a spoiled princess, she hasn't risen from rags to riches, she and her brother (also a famous youtuber) both come from a middle class Wiltshire family. Raised well etc.

Her career is based on self promotion and receiving freebies for review/mention in the hope that someone will buy that £20 lipstick as Zoella wore it.

When I first saw the calendar I assumed it was priced at £50 in the same way as the Soap and Glory sets are priced at £60-70, so that when they become the Boots STAR gift they appear to be a bargain!

DD (11) is no longer interested in Zoella, but we did get huge bargains in the January sales, the big gift baskets down to a few £ from £40-50. Not many products in them so good value for the money we had paid but would have felt ripped off if paid full price. Such as the plastic jar with a travel sized shower gel in it and a zoella branded flannel!

The problem here as with a lot of celebrities is ownership of issues. They cry and bleat and its not my fault etc whilst not taking ownership and apologising and saying that they do have to take profit and margins into consideration.

PoppyPopcorn · 15/11/2017 12:33

She's right that it's not her decision what a retailer sells a product for.

She has made millions out of pre-teens and teens with her vlogs and it seems her bubble is bursting. Maybe time for her to get a proper job?

CatsCatsCats11 · 15/11/2017 12:37

I've followed her scamming for a few years now, glad her bubble may burst soon.

She is ENGLISH???? I totally assumed this was a US based person who was perhaps a bit out of touch with how things work...

sweetbitter · 15/11/2017 12:45

Yeah, I don't think she's business savvy.

She's naturally good at being appealing in terms of look/lifestyle/way of talking to the camera, that's why lots of viewers latched onto her early on (before there were so many people trying to "make it" on youtube) and she was lucky enough to rise to the top of the youtube pile and get taken on by a management company who saw the huge potential she had in selling a lifestyle, and I think are pretty much 100% responsible for turning her into a massively successful brand.

I agree with peppy that but when your brand is you, you just can't afford to take the risk of letting someone else be the brand guardian. In one way she's no worse than hundreds of other companies marketing rip off tat at young people, except that she also wants to be seen as these young people's friend and will never, ever admit to any missteps. She wants to claim creative responsiblility for the brand and working incredible hard for it etc etc, but none of the responsibility when something goes wrong.

fantasmasgoria1 · 15/11/2017 12:45

i Do not follow these vloggers. If I want to know about make products I read reviews or try myself! Zoella imo has no talent! Since all this kicked off I researched Tanya Burr etc and I am shocked they earn money from being talentless! The makeup ranges are overpriced and makeup academy/revolution stuff is way better! And I do reckon Zoella knew about the price of the calendar.

TheEricaOlthwaiteGang · 15/11/2017 12:46

Sorry OP you did recommend skipping to 33 minutes.

It's entirely my fault that I watched 3.24 of the video in which she:

got up
put the kettle on
let the dog out for a shit
Moaned about the dog keeping her awake
Put on her make up (Time Lapse Thank God)
Showed us her make up (by closing her eyes for 5 seconds)
Made a jug of water and hoped it would be the "most perfect jug of water I've ever made"
Lamented that her jug is too small ("I wish I had bigger jugs" snerk)

I wish her well but really, how dull.

This is an eye-opening thread for me, as I knew very little about this sector.

Particularly interesting posts by MargaretCavendish, thecatfromjapan and GerkinSnatch.
