To think zoella is lying

Skip to 33. The calendar that her own company makes she says it's all down to boots and they choose the £50 price. She's been doing products for years and has full ownership of her company. She's not new or anything to releasing products

It's been on sale for two months and it's her name on it and was apparently only sad in the last few days when the backlash started.

Her body language is all off, avoiding eye contact and looking around. She says shes not in it for the money but has a long history of releasing cheap stuff for high prices.

As I watched some of that video, it just clicked that she’s the same age as me and I feel far older, a bit boring and sensible. I get that it’s a persona for young fans but it’s a little weird. Clearly I’m too old and don’t get it.

Also dawned on me that if people give that much of a shit about her carrying her camera around and feeding her dog Hmm the money she will rake in from the inevitable babies, marriage and any other life event is just staggering.

GherkinSnatch · 16/11/2017 09:03

I also agree with the non-hate message, there have been a few comments on the threads here that I feel have crossed the line from "acceptable criticism" to "being a dick".

There are very strict laws in mainstream old media channels re targeting kids. It’s be as well if some of them were applied to YouTube.

^ This, I think, sums up my interest in the situation. I find the whole Youtube phenomenon fascinating, and think it poses some pretty interesting ethical questions about the involvement and targeting of children - whether they're being used as an income stream for their parents in content creation, or whether they're being targeted by advertisers.

Re: Alfie and the workout photos. Did Jonathan Joly not ask fans to "make themselves look good" for him to get retweets/follows at one point?

mousemoose · 16/11/2017 09:06

itsagonna ah okay, thanks for clarifying, I still was wigged out by his style! Am oldz though.

One I quite like for changing into a ‘grown up’ is esmee lalonde - I’ve no idea how I happened upon her when she was Essie button but I think at some point she rebranded like this Louise (whom I don’t know). However disclaimer I don’t know much about esmee so doubtless someone will be along now to tell me she murders kittens etc.

Was standing in a lift alongside some people from big publishers yesterday and apparently a lot of the vloggers’ books are tanking (vloggers from all categories, lifestyle, mums etc) so maybe there is just a moment of being over it.

^Yes!

I used to watch Zoe, but as I got older (and she's a year older than me anyway) I got frustrated that she never did, and was always whining. I like Fleur De Force, and some of the US beauty vloggers (some of them seem much more 'legit' with their reviews, although obviously many pinches of salt are needed).

I've been watching Vlogbrothers for years, and the youtubers in that community seem to be much nicer, and when I've met them at events they are so genuine and friendly and really appreciate their community.

wantto that's probably a bit harsh

VivaLeBeaver · 16/11/2017 10:42

No it's not expected that the calendars are silly prices, most are good value for the contents

Sorry, I disagree. I'm talking about the Zoella and Tanya Burr calendars, they always have an initial high price and always go half price towards the middle of November. It's their marketing ploy. Same every year.

justilou1 · 16/11/2017 11:20

I'll bet her anxiety level is sky high now her pants are on fire again.

TillyMint81 · 16/11/2017 11:26

I shared one of the review videos on my fb page and got shot down by a friend. Apparently Zoellas fans aren’t impressionable kids as I thought but, according to friend, her fans base is mainly 24-30 year olds?!?!
I mean, I don’t follow her but my eleven year old daughter does and I’ve seen some of the stuff that’s posted and I’m pretty sure it’s not aimed at people in their twenties.
I’m in the wrong for sharing and the guy is in the wrong for reviewing it?!?! You tubers sticking together I guess.

I'm not surprised. I know the gleam lot sell themselves as "I've got 5 million followers" when most of those are fake followers or dead accounts. Their actual influence is tiny, many aren't even getting 50k views and brands are waking up to that they have been hoodwinked by gleam. The gleam books are the worst anyway, mostly copy and paste jobs (Naomi smart is the worst for this), ripping off other books or just ghost written. Good riddens.

Sorry but I disagree, this is the first year zoella has had a callender and Tanya's is way better value and both are white label and made by the same company. Tanya's is mostly full size products and has been on sale for 20 for the last month. It's easily 10 times the value of zoellas so unfair to even lump them together.

Apparently Zoellas fans aren’t impressionable kids as I thought but, according to friend, her fans base is mainly 24-30 year olds?!?!

Zoella likes to keep saying most of her fans are 18-24 as that's what Google stats say. However teens just lie about their age when signing up to YouTube so that they can view videos with swearing and that. You just have to look at the zoella events to know her fans are mostly 13.

W0rriedMum · 16/11/2017 11:58

Zoella is a charlatan IMO.

My 9 year old really got into her for a bit and spent time looking at the guinea pig and dog related videos. Recently however, she has been turned off by the tie-ups with other vloggers and is starting to see her as manipulative. We have spoken to her about product placement and the reasons behind the "favourite product" this month. She is definitely not following the high standards set for TV commercials.

Agree with PP that vloggers for all market segments have had their day.

IhaveChillyToes · 16/11/2017 12:48

I have only just (as of 2 days ago) become aware of you tubers - never noticed them before

Apart from selling stuff like this strange calendar - how do they earn money?

I looked on you tube and saw 12, xxxxxxxx and first thought it said 12,000 then I looked again and saw it was over 12 million

MrsJamin · 16/11/2017 12:51

It's not just zoella cashing in for Christmas! Shock 6.99 for stickers?! Are they made of gold?!

To think zoella is lying
RoseDog · 16/11/2017 12:53

MrsJamin they are zoellas stickers!

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 16/11/2017 12:55

Ha that's on zoellas own shop, they are 6.99 plus 3.99 delivery. Who's to blame for that zoella? Your products on your shop!

OP posts:
mousemoose · 16/11/2017 12:56

Hohoho the irony #sugglife

melj1213 · 16/11/2017 12:57

She'll just blame Joe

RoseDog · 16/11/2017 13:00

Has joe or Alfie come out to support her Alfie is in Dubai on a mates holiday he left yesterday

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 16/11/2017 13:00

Boots have deleted over 150 one star reviews of the callender...

Just like on Amazon when the gleam lot get all the one star reviews deleted. It must be some sort of fraud.

MrsJamin · 16/11/2017 13:01

The UK p&p is £2.95, I thought that was just her brother's shop? It is simply shocking how much these products are, and how they are advertised on YouTube.

sweetbitter · 16/11/2017 13:01

Ihave - once you get to a certain level of popularity, YouTube starts cutting you in on ad revenue. I don't know how the algorithms work exactly, but number of views/subscribers/likes/comments all seem to play a part. Notably however as of last year YouTube started changing these algorithms quite significantly and putting more restrictions on what kind of videos are eligible to be part of the scheme, meaning that most Youtubers are seemingly earning less than before (from the pure YouTube side). I know that smaller channels have been hot the hardest, I'm not sure how much it's affected the bigger players like Zoella.

Aside from YouTube payments, they make money from videos being sponsored by a brand (has to be declared in the video description as a sponsored), product placement/recommending products to fans (this is dodgier ground in terms of how explicit you have to be that you are getting paid, I think), doing events and meet n greets, flogging their own merchandise and books etc.

Plus they are all seen as "influencers" so added from getting paid to recommend stuff, they constantly receive an endless stream of speculative freebies from companies hoping the product will make it into their videos. From makeup to clothes to holidays to "experiences" to gadgets and tech...the top players will be receiving thousands of pounds worth of freebies every month.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 16/11/2017 13:01

Noticed the Zoella calendars are half price in boots this morning

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 16/11/2017 13:08

That shop is owned by her boyfriend and the founder of gleam. Think it's fair to say it's her shop as her and her bf are very intertwined. Her main house in Hurst is legally owned by her boyfriends parents. Presumably some kind of dodge.

Zoella and gleam weren't really affected by the adrates as they don't swear or do anything controversial.

I've noticed the video with her apology and the memory box one referenced on the other thread has no negative comments that I could see. I didn't scroll through them all, there's only so much "ignore the h8rz they jealous, we know u didn't do it love u 4eva xxxxxxxx" I could read. But it doesn't surprise me the negative reviews have been removed.

Also, £3.99 to get some stickers posted?! Jog on.
