To think zoella is lying

Skip to 33. The calendar that her own company makes she says it's all down to boots and they choose the £50 price. She's been doing products for years and has full ownership of her company. She's not new or anything to releasing products

It's been on sale for two months and it's her name on it and was apparently only sad in the last few days when the backlash started.

Her body language is all off, avoiding eye contact and looking around. She says shes not in it for the money but has a long history of releasing cheap stuff for high prices.

Just watched it & then viewed the contents. I seriously wouldn't want to pay a fiver for that.

Theresnonamesleft · 15/11/2017 22:47

I think hello world was the start of their demise. It was a result of this that parents started paying attention to the tat they are
Flogging.

It might be hard for her to move on and do something else to earn money. But this is no different to other people in society who for various reasons have to change.

It’s not like she’s going to be skint. She has
Other properties that she lets. Plus
Who knows what else.

MaximaDeWit · 15/11/2017 23:00

I was gobsmacked at the calendar thing as much as the next person but the Zoella hating today has reminded me of the Hate of the Nation episode of Black Mirror.

Yes, she’s a twit but she’s also a symptom

MaximaDeWit · 15/11/2017 23:00

*Hated In The Nation

StickThatInYourPipe · 15/11/2017 23:02

MaximaDeWit which one was that? I love Black Mirror

MaximaDeWit · 15/11/2017 23:08

The one with the artificial pollinator drone things that attack people targeted with a hashtag. It then turns out that the real target where the people using the hashtag anonymously online

StickThatInYourPipe · 15/11/2017 23:13

MaximaDeWit

Oooh I’ve not seen that one! Will have to have a look on Netflix :)

RebootYourEngine · 16/11/2017 04:01

Maybe it is time Zoella and half of those on YouTube got proper jobs instead of trying to rip people off.

My parents bought me a Yankee candle advent calendar a few years back. (I'm massively obsessed). It had 24 Windows, good quality products and coat half of what zoellas calendar is sold for.

I just don't get how anyone in their right mind would think that zoella tat is worth 50 quid. She's already got a successful beauty range. A few mini versions of those in it, maybe one cookie cutter (it is christmas and you can get away with that) but confetti? Pom pom key rings? Oh please! What a total waste of money! As for the 12 Windows.. I can't even...

InspMorse · 16/11/2017 06:18

'That makes me so sad because that's not who I am. That's not why I do this. And, if you know me, you know that. 'I'm not here to justify myself as a person, because you either know me or you don't. This is just a rubbish situation that a lot of people can learn from.'

Manipulation at its finest!!
Translation:
If you 'know' me, if you are a true fan you will believe everything I tell you about this. You're either with me or you're not.

Angry
Toadinthehole · 16/11/2017 06:28

I'd not heard of Zoella before and I'm already starting to feel sorry for her. This is starting to look like a classic Internet dogpile.

I bet most of her detractors professed undying love last week.

thecatfromjapan · 16/11/2017 06:37

I'm in agreement with the internet dogpile.

Once the Daily Mail are involved with the hating, I'm well and truly out: it's a clear signal.

The calendar's crap. The whole thing has really woken me up to a side of youtube and marketing I wasn't aware of.

But Zoella's just a person - and a female person. She hasn't committed a war crime. The personal hounding isn't OK - and that's the direction it's taking - partly, I think, because she is a female.

AmeliaFlashtart · 16/11/2017 06:44

It's just commerce surely?! Most if the stuff we buy on a daily basis costs pence to make yet has a huge markup. All those bogof deals still turn a fat profit! 3 for 2 at boots? They can appear to give one away whilst you ONLY pay for two. A huge original markup allows them to create this illusion whilst still making a healthy profit.

firsttimemama89 · 16/11/2017 06:55

She won't set the RRP however as an affiliated product wholly endorsed by her/her brand she will have "sign off" prior to launch.

Everything from design, RRP, anticipated mark down, placement, qty.

Could be that Gleam her managements co have not kept her looped in?!

Honeydragon · 16/11/2017 07:06

CatoftheJapan, I agree it’s easier to direct hate at a woman than an man, societies had more practise.

But I think much of the genuine anger about this is that it’s targeting young girls, and extorting them via their emotions for this woman.

VivaLeBeaver · 16/11/2017 07:08

It's expected that these calendars will be at a silly price initially and then be on half price offer. Anyone who buys it at full price is a bit silly.

Last year I got dd a Tanya Burr calendar for £15. 12 windows but was happy with the stuff for the price.

This year I carefully researched what was in these calendars, inc Zoellas.....decided none were worth buying and got her a Yankee Candle one instead. You can find out within two mins of googling what the contents are before you buy them.

Heckneck · 16/11/2017 07:09

Exactly. She is just a person in a money making world. Her team are using her reach like any other business would. Admittedly they've made a huge mistake on they calender, but the hounding of her personally isn't on. There's a lot of bitterness overview the fact that she's filthy rich. Look at any mega rich person and the will be an element of ruthlessness along the way. You don't get rich by not stepping on a few people.

NumberEightyOne · 16/11/2017 07:28

There is no problem with people making money but exploitation is not on and she should answer for it.
As for the huge social media backlash, well, she's built her reputation and fortune on her massive media exposure so it's inevitable that any misdemeanor would be met by a huge response. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

thecatfromjapan · 16/11/2017 07:31

Yes, HoneyDragon I have a young(ish) dd and it's been a real shock (as in, it's brought my attention to something I just wasn't 'seeing' before) to me. Sad It's actually been quite unnerving. And I'm a cynical, old person.

My post is pretty much an interjection/reminder/polite request for people not to take anything like a Daily Hate route in discussing all this.

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 16/11/2017 07:32

No it's not expected that the calendars are silly prices, most are good value for the contents.

She's not being hounded, people are quite rightly being critical of her sly and minpultive ways.

If she doesn't want criticism she shouldn't put her name to products in the shops and just be happy with her basic 50k a month advertising income rather than flogging anything to make over six figures a month.

No one would bat an eyelid here if she wasn't exploting young people. she's got away with it for years due to a laissez-faire "she's just a person leave her alone" attitude.

mousemoose · 16/11/2017 08:03

I do agree with the not-hate message, she’s just a pretty young person personally and I don’t like to see misogyny in the way she’s described. That idubzz section I watched he was getting in his house to drive to a vloggers house (I mean she seemed pretty despicable but still) to arrive on her doorstep filming her and driving her vigilante style to say the n word. It seemed threatening and deeply uncomfortable and I could not ever support that.

HOWEVER I have read all these threads, I work in media, and I would say that anyone who thinks that it’s not her or she didn’t know about price points or she’s just a an innocent girly who doesn’t know how t all works is deluding themselves. This is a tough, cutthroat world - how many teens/young women have yt channels do you think? How many make it work for a second, yet alone a decade, let alone make millions? If she hadn’t done this, she’d probably have popped up elsewhere in the media because she has the golden touch of being able to connect with a particular demographic and heavily influence them. She has run with that, and it has brought her significant wealth (8 rentals? A 2 mil house? The house next door as a office? Plus did you see the fittings of that house?). Plus, the lifestyle that successful bloggers are leading now is insane. I was following some fashion bloggers/instas and the things they get invited to by fashion and beauty houses are insane. With fashion, I love the fact that they’ve smashed a narrow, exclusive club open, but then they’re largely not aimed at exploiting tweens. Anyway, my point is that she gets to a) make a ton of money without having to get up at 5 and commute everyday b) have all the stuff AND the future financial security (for most her age it’s either or- designer handbag OR saving for eg flat deposit) and c) get a lot of lauding and adoration from audience and pandering from consumer companies (think of pps comment re boxes outside her house!). The quid pro quo is that she will def have her detractors like all media stars and also she should have a sense of responsibility towards her vulnerable audience.

There are very strict laws in mainstream old media channels re targeting kids. It’s be as well if some of them were applied to YouTube.

LizzieSiddal · 16/11/2017 08:05

*Cat I think if she’d apologised straight away with a “I am so sorry, this product should not have gone out at that price, it won’t happen again” the “dogpile” won’t have happened. Instead she released that very long, rambling, manipulative video and it has made people more angry. And rightly so imo.

She has form for being economical with the truth- her book, and she recovered. She and her management have not handled this well at all.

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 16/11/2017 08:19

Idubzz hasn't turned up at anyone's house unless he's invited. That's not his style and wouldn't invade privacy. He confronts them at a public event, like an investigative journalist would.

She's still yet to apologise, and just says the price is boots fault and she's really happy with the shitty products.
