AIBU to make a cake in laws can't eat

It's DPs big birthday this weekend. I'm making him a cake. In laws are coming to visit. But none of them will be able to eat the cake I am making.
In order to make a cake they could eat it would have to be a gluten free vegan cake with no fruit or veg or spice in it. DPs fave cake is carrot cake, so that's problematic already. Every birthday it has to be gluten free vegan and he gets really annoyed about it as he says they taste like saw dust. I'm sure it is possible to make a nice gluten free vegan cake (in fact I've done it before), but it's his birthday and it's about him surely?? He loves buttercream and kinder buenos. Would you be annoyed if you were my in laws and came to and there was a gluteny buttery cake, covered in kinder buenos? Do I have to make a separate cake for them?

We had the same issue recently, my Sil was celebrating a big birthday and she made her own sponge cake.

My Dd has coeliac disease so can’t have any wheat barley or rye, so I said I’d bring my Dd a gluten free cupcake that most supermarkets stock, but mil as put in a request for fruit cake as she doesn’t like sponge cake, she’s never turned down a piece of sponge cake when it was offered previously she was just being difficult no medical reason why she couldn’t have apiece of sponge cake.

Sil got a bit stressed as you can imagine, I did take a cupcake with me but Sil brought mil a fruit cake, so I’d say as it’s your Dh birthday he gets to call the shots on what cake he has, I always think if you have an allergy it’s best to provide your own food,

I would make the cake your DH wants for his birthday.

I would tell his parents to bring a cake they can eat if they want cake.

In my family we have vegans, gluten free and dairy free people.

The birthday person has the cake they want, others are catered for separately. We make sure there's something available for everyone, but if you don't fit the criteria for the main cake then you get to look at it and coo normally it me looking lustfully at the unsuitable cake Grin

On my last big birthday my sister was going through a raw vegan phase.

In lieu of birthday cake and at her behest, my Mum allowed her to make a birthday 'chocolate mousse'. It was a dozen mashed avocados and half a tub of cocoa powder, mixed together and chilled.

I won't lie, I was gutted. I don't even like avocados. I wasn't all about the big birthday, but I do think a cake and a candle on the day is lovely for everyone.

Now I have DC and a DH my philosophy is the person who's birthday it is gets their favourite and people can either have the same or an alternative.

YANBU. Give your DH the cake he deserves!

In other news, I'm popping out to buy a Kinder Bueno or two and I'm blaming you.

My MIL is gluten free and I always make a regular cake for the rest of us and have a stash of gf brownies in the freezer. When the cake comes out, I ask her if she would like a brownie and if does, I nuke it quickly and she is very happy. Having them in the freezer saves if she doesnt feel like a dessert, which she often doesnt.

There's nothing wrong with having two cakes on offer for a birthday imo. I think you should make the vegan GF cake yourself unless you can afford to buy a pretty good quality one. I always think the supermarket free from cakes are a bit dry. But if you make a really nice vegan GF cake you can enjoy eating it up if there's any left overs.

Nigella has a great recipe for gluten free carrot cake. Not sure it's vegan though. However it's your DH's birthday, bake him what he wants.

I was just going to say Nigellas dark and sumptuous chocolate cake is vegan and I think it would work with GF flour but I haven't tested out www.nigella.com/recipes/dark-and-sumptuous-chocolate-cake

I've made that before I think sooooo. Is it the Venetian one with pine nuts? I don't think it is vegan as i think I remember it having eggs in it...

It is really nice, but it isn't the same as a standard carrot cake tbh.

If the op's dp loves standard carrot cake he might not love the nigella one iyswim.

Make DP the kinder bueno cake. It's his birthday.

However, you do need to make something for your in-laws. I wouldn't want to turn up at someone's house and there be nothing for me to eat.

Why no fruit veg or spice?????

I’ve had some gorgeous courgette vegan GF cakes but not essentially vegan Victoria cake

Anyone else gagging for cake now?

Vegan or otherwise. I'm not fussy. Grin

You would not be unreasonable to make him a carrot cake, if that's what he wants. You would be unreasonable to put buttercream frosting on a carrot cake. It calls for cream cheese frosting, surely.

Sorry, thiskittenbarks didn't mean to cast aspersions on your cake making abilities, was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek but realise that didn't really come across. Blush

Having thought about it more, it's probably the vegan bit that is sawdust! Wink

Happy Birthday to DP. Hope he enjoys your carrot Cake. Also getting cravings now and I'm supposed to be on a diet.

Surely they have asked 'what can we bring?'....... and the answer is 'oh one of your lovely gluten free fruit free dairy free (taste free) cakes please!'

Apologies turbo - you are correct, it has rye flour in it. I hadn't realised. I have no idea why they've done that, as the guy who started the company is coeliac, as are his DC, and rye flour gluten would affect them as well.

Orgran make gluten free cake mixes which apparently have directions for preparing them for vegans. Also, there are lots of suggestions on Youtube on how to make cakes using packet cake mixes and a can of fizzy drink - so that would be vegan as well as gluten free, plus very, very easy.

The birthday person gets to decide what kind of cake they have. It's THEIR birthday.

Making a separate cake for other guests? Why? It's not their birthday. Yes make sure there are suitable foods on offer, but you don't have make a separate cake. Unless you want to of course, then go for it!

I'd do his cake however you want then hit the gluten free aisle especially the freezer section.

Birthday cake that's vegan and gluten free is virtually impossible but it's not their birthday so sod trying to do that. I'd get something like this www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/food-heaven-lemon-dairy-free/662513-204893-204894 its cheap (compared to a lot of gf stuff) vegan, gf and actually tastes nice (you can get a few similar things as well as this one in Tesco as well) other options are gf muffins or similar.

If someone chooses to be vegan but refuses to eat any fruit or veg including anything that's vaguely fruit flavoured then to be honest it's tough. You shouldn't have to cater for such an insanely restricted diet that's entirely by choice.
