AIBU to make a cake in laws can't eat

It's DPs big birthday this weekend. I'm making him a cake. In laws are coming to visit. But none of them will be able to eat the cake I am making.
In order to make a cake they could eat it would have to be a gluten free vegan cake with no fruit or veg or spice in it. DPs fave cake is carrot cake, so that's problematic already. Every birthday it has to be gluten free vegan and he gets really annoyed about it as he says they taste like saw dust. I'm sure it is possible to make a nice gluten free vegan cake (in fact I've done it before), but it's his birthday and it's about him surely?? He loves buttercream and kinder buenos. Would you be annoyed if you were my in laws and came to and there was a gluteny buttery cake, covered in kinder buenos? Do I have to make a separate cake for them?

"gluten free vegan cake with no fruit or veg or spice in it."

WTF would it taste of?

I don't know where you are based, but there is a bakery in Brixton (where else!) that does gluten-free vegan cakes

Don't know how many of them are fruit and veg-free also, but could you order something from there to be delivered to you, to save you the hassle, and also guarantee it won't have anything 'wrong' in it?

They usually do chocolate cake with gf flour and some sort of egg substitute and vegan butter. It's very...crumbley.
I made vegan lemon polenta cake one year and fussy vegan wouldn't eat it. I think I'll just buy in.

Make your DH whatever you want to and just spoil him.

Have some thing dessertish for your in-laws, but don't work to hard at it. They are just too high maintenance. (And I have a bunch of food allergies, but at least I eat fruit. I'd be perfectly happy with a bowl of strawberries will others ate cake).

a vegan who doesn't eat fruit or veg

Dear lord...!

There is a vegan who doesn't eat fruit or veg or like spice (basically eats potato, bread and vegan cheese exclusively), a vegan who eats fruit and veg, and someone who doesn't eat gluten.

The first person, that's their look out. Second two are more legit. I would probably make a vegan and gluten free carrot cake but I quite like hippy baking (ground almonds!). OR just make whatever cake you want and buy a vegan/gluten free cake or some flapjacks, and if person 1 doesn't want it then they can get chips on the way home.

Are they vegan and gluten-free because they are allergic to gluten and diary/meat and also fruit and veg or is it just a fab?
If it's just the fab, I wouldn't have a problem with two cakes at all. I'd serve two cakes for dietary reasons too but would explain the reason and try making their cake really nice and tasty.

I love it how people say "what's the problem? Bake him a cake and buy a gluten free vegan cake."

Hahaha, that's said by someone who knows nothing about allergies or intolerances.
'Gluten free vegan cake' doesn't exist.

I'm sure it will one day, but right now it does not.

If you want a gluten free vegan cake you have to bake it yourself.

OP YANBU. I know Asda do chocolate rocky roads and such like which are free from all the things you stated. Buy a few of those so they don't miss out and bake your husband a lovely cake.

Get them to bring their own as you want to be sure they'll have something to their needs/tastes and not be disappointed like the lemon polenta thing.

And never mind cake my mind is boggling at a vegan who wont eat vegetables!

Err, yeah it does... I've posted a link to a shop that sells thousands of them! They've even written books about them and had them featured in the national press.
idiots people queue up outside the shop for hours on a saturday morning to buy them

If people are just fussy, rather than having genuine requirements, then you're within your rights to fuck 'em.

Make what your DP wants.

I still say cupcakes.

Slather some Nutella on a pile of rice crispier for the inlaws and make him a cake he likes!

I'm assuming this is the total of all allergies and preferences across inlaws? Because I can't imagine how someone can be vegan but not eat fruit and veg, and why anyone would be allergic to "spices" as a whole. I know some people are allergic specifically to cinnamon or nutmeg etc, but just saying no fruit no veg no spice no gluten no eggs no dairy makes it impossible. If it's just one fussy person I'd just buy them some chocs or some sweet treat they could eat, and let everyone else get on with it!

If they're vegans how can they eat fruit and veg? Aren't they gonna starve?

Of course it does. I could buy one in the next hour and I don't even live in a city. Or near one.

Completely missing the point-what is wrong with you in laws? If they don't eat animal products, gluten, fruit, veg or spice what do they eat?

I hate it when people start a replying post with "Err..." it makes them sound like such a condescending twat.

@sparechange as that link states it's the first vegan cake shop to open. So it's hardly a surprise that I've not heard of it is it?
People were talking as though the op could just 'pop to Tesco' and pick up a gluten free vegan cake.
As I said, I'm sure it will happen soon as your errrr, link suggests. It's happening and it's growing.
So err thanks for that.

Alright, that's it. I've been lurking for the last three years on this blasted site but this post finally pushed me to create an account. For everyone who's asking what is there left if there's no fruit or spice, etc... there are several other kinds of cakes. Just look outside of British ones. For example, try making an olive oil cake. Here's a chocolate one from Smitten Kitchen that's vegan:

smittenkitchen.com/2017/10/chocolate-olive-oil-cake-more-book-tour/

Because it uses olive oil, it's moist and won't be crumbly. There are other versions of olive oil cake but they tend to use citrus and your guests may be meh about that. That said, here's a good recipe for a traditional one, just sub the eggs with flax replacer and wheat flour for almond flour: www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/melissa-darabian/orange-olive-oil-cake-recipe-2042483.amp

Of course you can make lovely vegan gluten free cake! I don't know how to make it without and fruit or veg though. Beetroot and chocolate or zucchini and walnut all make for brilliant vegan combos.

make him the cake you want.

Buy a small vegan cake, buy a small gluten free cake (assuming the gluten person isn't vegan). Everyone has had pudding of some discription they can and want to eat.

Your DH has lots of left over yummy cake for the next few days. Its his birthday, he's not vegan, why shouldn't he get nice cake?
