People have, unless they only watch F&F, largely stopped believing what 45 and his advisers say.

Fox News Poll: World going to hell in a handbasket as nation comes apart at seams

OP posts:
TheClaws · 29/09/2017 01:07

I can somewhat understand the ‘standing during anthem’ thing. It’s something that in my country is required of all children and teenagers - everybody really that can stand. It’s automatic and denotes respect. Now, I recognise the situation is somewhat different in the US at the moment. Lion’s letter above i think is less about ordering students to fall in line with Trump, but more about keeping the peace.

Bending a knee is not exactly disrespectful, though.
It's usual a sign of submission or of prayer.

What they don't like is people protesting.

Wasn't this the man who forgot to place his hand on his heart?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 29/09/2017 06:08

theclaws The funny thing about that poll is that it produces near enough the same results every time they run it, regardless of who’s in charge

TheClaws · 29/09/2017 06:40

Lweji, I understand that, at the minute, when players kneel, they aren’t meaning to disrespect their country or flag. However it could lead to dissension and attention and it is likely this the school it wanting to avoid, I’d say.

Pain how funny. I wonder if it’s mainly the same people answering? I particularly love the phrase ‘world going to hell in a handbasket’.

It might just be that the general demographic of people that they’re polling are perpetual victims who constantly see things as going to shit which makes sense when you consider that they elected trump is the biggest “the world is against me” shuckster there is

It’s a great phrase those!

Russian hacker facing charges in U.S. claims he worked for Putin's party

thehill.com/policy/cybersecurity/352893-russian-hacker-wanted-by-us-tells-court-he-worked-for-putins-party?amp

A renowned Russian hacker arrested by Spanish authorities on a U.S. warrant, reportedly said Thursday he worked for Russian President Vladimir Putin's party.

Peter Levashov told a Madrid court that he worries he would be tortured and possibly killed if extradited to the U.S., Reuters, citing a report by the RIA news agency, reported.

"If I go to the U.S., I will die in a year. They want to get information of a military nature and about the United Russia party," he said, according to the news agency. "I will be tortured, within a year I will be killed, or I will kill myself."

Levashov, who is also known as Peter Severa, said he has worked for the United Russia party for a decade.

"I collected different information about opposition parties and delivered it to the necessary people at the necessary time," he said, according to the Reuters report, but did not elaborate further.

Levashov faces charges in the U.S. related to the creation of a global network of hijacked computers - called "Kelihos" botnets. These botnets, prosecutors say, infected about 100,000 devices with viruses, sending spam email messages he allegedly used to obtain users' private or financial information.

Thanks, Pain, I'm reading that OU study now.

One of the categories they sort tweets into is Junk News:
"This content includes various forms of propaganda and ideologically extreme, hyper-partisan, or conspiratorial political news and information. Much of this content is deliberately produced false reporting. It seeks to persuade readers about the moral virtues or failings of organizations, causes or people and presents commentary as a news product. This content is produced by organizations that do not employ professional journalists, and the content uses attention grabbing techniques, lots of pictures, moving images, excessive capitalization, ad hominem attacks, emotionally charged words and pictures, unsafe generalizations and other logical fallacies."

Clickbait, basically! (But with profound undermining-democracy implications)

I've finally got round to watching the "The Secrets of Silicon Valley" on BBC iPlayer (available till next week, I think).
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b091zhtk

Most of it won't be news for people who've followed closely here, but it's a good summary of the FB/Google/Cambridge Analytica situation. And reminded me of stuff I'd forgotten from years ago, like why FB and other social media sites don't have the same responsibilities in US law as publishers.

It also mentioned "emotional contagion" - ie that the emotional words people use when writing FB posts mirror the emotions they've received in reading FB. So receiving posts or news stories with more positive emotional words led to them posting with more positive emotional words; reading more negative emotional words led to them posting more negative emotional words.

Also the greater the intensity of the emotion in a post - positive or negative - the more likely it is to spread online.

More of the mechanics of clickbait, basically.
