All over Facebook mothers ott reactions to children going to school..
The one that got my goat was....
"I stand and watch you walk away with tears in my eyes, the girl I once knew has gone, you will never be fully mine again"
The child is going into year 2 not sent to a Japanese concentration camp...

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 05/09/2017 10:40

Yeah I like a back to school photo too :)

Sandsunsea · 05/09/2017 10:41

Hahaha! Same person that posted that tripe will be posting about dreading the summer holidays coming up next year!

Rocksyluv · 05/09/2017 10:41

Hahaha ! Grin

dollydaydream114 · 05/09/2017 10:43

I don't have kids but if I did I suspect I might cry like a massive baby when they started school ... mainly because I hated school myself really. So I can deal with a photo of a kid on their first day and a "They look so grown up. I'm an emotional wreck!" caption.

However, totally agree that all the saccharine poems, melodramatic stuff about losing them forever etc is waaaaaaaay OTT and horrendous. It's school, not death.

dollydaydream114 · 05/09/2017 10:44

The bog-standard 'back to school' pics are something I actually love though. I do like to see my friends' kids are getting on.

notarehearsal · 05/09/2017 10:46

endofthelinefinally exactly

Gizmo79 · 05/09/2017 10:46

I am guilty of posting a pic of my daughter today starting secondary.

She looked so smart in her new uniform and I am very proud of her.
I'm not bothered if no one looks at it, but I hope no one is offended by a proud parent.😄

Loyly · 05/09/2017 10:46

dropped my Ellie at school today isn't going to get the same likes and loves as ^^ pish is it

That's it exactly Grin

Cheby · 05/09/2017 10:47

I was going to say YABU, then I read your post and if that's the kind of mawkish crap you're referring to then YADNBU. 😂

My eldest starts primary tomorrow so I am sure I will shed a tear once she's safely dropped off, but I won't be posting any poems or memes!

Love51 · 05/09/2017 10:47

I think if there had been a real chance of my kid not getting to school, I'd cry when they did (like if they'd been seriously ill, not a places shortage). But privately, not on Facebook. As it is, I'm working tomorrow so their dad is doing the first day (the youngest only goes for a few hours the first week, to ease the poor parents into it).

treaclesoda · 05/09/2017 10:48

The child is going into year 2 not sent to a Japanese concentration camp...

I properly laughed at that, an out loud laugh. That doesn't happen to me often Grin

OP I agree. Although I do remember walking my pfb to school and then walking the whole way home crying. But I was pregnant and hormonal at the time, so that's my excuse. And I also went home and had a cup of tea and put my feet up, and that helped too...

ElizabethG81 · 05/09/2017 10:52

I just can't get over how many parents seem to think it's a good idea to put pictures of their children in school uniform, clearly identifying the school they attend, all over Facebook. The mind boggles.

clumsyduck · 05/09/2017 10:54

Hahaha op 😂 God that poem ! Just a tad dramatic !!!

I do get a bit "aww time flies " with each school year starting and hope dc settle in ok etc

Day off today so Currently laid on the sofa drinking tea and on here so all is well !!

Spottylu · 05/09/2017 10:54

I agree. I even like the American habit of holding a back to school sign. Why not make a fuss for the kids going back and encourage them to think it's special.

But the drama of the 'how terrible I feel' mum does make me think it isn't about the kids anymore.

BertramTheWalrus · 05/09/2017 10:54

It's a competition to show who loves their kids most. Makes me cringe!

Firenight · 05/09/2017 10:55

School back tomorrow and my first working from home day on Thursday on my own in what feels like eons. I can't wait.

I might even get into my son's bedroom at some point with a bin bag and a hoover.

DoubleHelix79 · 05/09/2017 10:56

When I went off to uni I realised I'd forgotten the keys to my student flat 10 minutes after leaving home. Turned the car around, entered family home, found parents already carrying their furniture into my old room. Thanks parents Grin

PollyFlint · 05/09/2017 10:57

I'm not a parent so no idea how I'd feel about a child starting school (my gut instinct is that I'd probably shed a few tears, though) but that sort of mawkish Facebook post is really not my thing. Luckily most of my actual friends aren't into that sort of stuff although there a couple of ex-classmates on my FB friends list who are a bit fond of shit poems superimposed on photos sunsets/candles/rainbows/unicorns for stuff like that ... I shall look out for them.

In short, YABU if you think parents can't feel a tug at the heartstrings when their child starts school ... but YADNBU if schmaltzy poems about it makes you want to throw up. :D

I'm a big fan of the 'child in a slightly too-large uniform standing by the front door clutching their book bag' photo though. I do find them cute. Which is lucky as I'm of an age where I see about 40 of them on Facebook every September.

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/09/2017 10:57

There's no competition Bertram. I definitely love my children more than anyone else does - dh excepted. Wink

MrsJayy · 05/09/2017 10:58

My friend did post a pic of her son on his first day at work I think she was feeling a bit over emosh at her baby being a grown man

3catsadogaboyandahubby · 05/09/2017 10:58

I am a hard cow, so I don't even get wistful at the whole "oooh, doesn't time fly" stuff. Um. No. It marches on. My little guy is going to nursery next week and I am looking forward to it. It's a new phase and a new challenge for all of us. That's it.

Every one of my friends on facebook already knows what school my children attend, because they know me, and they know where I live. My facebook profile is private, so random people can't see them.

But I could google almost any primary school in the UK and bring up their website and see photos of the children there, so I don't really understand the angst. I could probably google any primary school in my area and see a child that I recogise. Any parent who has safety concerns (eg a violent ex partner) isn't going to be allowing their child to appear on the school website, and they won't be putting their photo on facebook either.

treaclesoda · 05/09/2017 11:00

Although having said that, I don't tend to post photos of them much anyway. But I'm sure that if I search back through a few years photos there is probably one somewhere where they are in uniform.
