WIBU to ask smoker in car park to move?

TempusEejit · 21/08/2017 11:20

Late last night I had a burst water pipe but the emergency plumber can't get here till late this afternoon. I therefore went to the supermarket this morning to stock up on 2ltr bottles of water so I can wash my hands, flush the loo etc.

As I went back to my car there were two women having a chat by the boot of the car parked next to mine. As I got closer I saw that the woman closest to my car was smoking. By the time I'd opened my boot I realised the wind was blowing the smoke in my direction. As I started to unpack there was no indication that the women would be moving any time soon so I gave them an apologetic smile and said "so sorry, but would you mind standing over there (indicating towards the other side of their car) as I have bad asthma and am very sensitive to cigarette smoke?" plus I don't want my hair to fucking stink

She scowled, looked at her cigarette and said, "What, you can smell this thing?" I said yes I can. She said incredulously, "What, this?" I explained again that I have asthma and smoke can trigger it off, that I had to stand where I was standing to load my car and as I had a lot of heavy bottles it's taking me longer to unpack than usual (they weren't individually bagged up). The woman pointed at my car and growled "you'll be getting more fumes from that, pet" so I replied "maybe, but they don't trigger my asthma." After that the woman scowled again but she and her friend finally moved away whilst muttering under her breath.

I didn't think I was being funny with this woman but the way she reacted to me was like I was the rudest person on earth. If I'd have anticipated she'd stand around to argue I'd have just stood back and waited for them to leave - but then why should two of us have to wait around when one has to (to finish their cigarette) and the other doesn't? Btw I took a puff of my inhaler when I got in the car so all is well but I can still smell the smoke on my hair

Was I being unreasonable in asking the woman to move?

Maybe buy a mask for next time 😷

jojo2916 · 21/08/2017 11:46

How do you manage driving about, air quality is far worse inside a vehicle than out, even on busy roads the air quality is better outside than inside a car

WorraLiberty · 21/08/2017 11:47

Oh yes, I knew I was missing something.

The hair!! Grin Torch

PenelopeFlintstone · 21/08/2017 11:47

You probably asked her politely but it would still have embarrassed her.

LogicalPsycho · 21/08/2017 11:48

Liiinoo · 21/08/2017 11:49

I hate smoking, the smell makes me heave but YWBU. You cannot expect the world to revolve around you. I love the diagram though.

TheNaze73 · 21/08/2017 11:49

I hate smoking. Hate it. But, YABU

maddiemookins16mum · 21/08/2017 11:49

I'm only forgiving you your riduculousness because of the utterly brilliant colour diagram.

DressedCrab · 21/08/2017 11:50

You were rude and unreasonable.

TempusEejit · 21/08/2017 11:51

thingywhatsit I was at Aldi so they only did 2 ltr bottles or smaller. They only had the 4 packs in fizzy not still.

Anyway I concede I was being wholly unreasonable and will blame it on the stress of having no running water, worrying about the bill for the plumber, plus the triple whammy of it being the first day of my totm (I flood through within an hour so the lack of water is a really big deal!)

Decaffstilltastesweird · 21/08/2017 11:52

Hmmmm I don't actually think ywbu to ask, if it was really because of your asthma. The hair thing does sound a bit precious though. I hate my hair smelling of sausages, but I wouldn't ask anyone to not cook sausages around me because I don't want my hair to smell.

Anyway, they did move for you, so I don't really know what the problem is?

I too really like your diagram though Star!

Decaffstilltastesweird · 21/08/2017 11:52

Oh x post!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 21/08/2017 11:52

Nice diagram OP especially the dresses on the toilet door figures.
Are they from Boden?

Gottagetmoving · 21/08/2017 11:53

Really Gotta? I've never been a smoker, but I don't think I'd move away from my own boot while I was having a chat I'd someone came and stood by their car. I wouldn't expect a smoker to do that or think it was inconsiderate of them not to

I didn't mean you should move.
In my experience friends are conscious other people don't like their smoke so they automatically move along a bit to minimise the effect of their smoke on others and yes, would do so if asked out of consideration.
I totally accept that someone shouldn't have to move if they don't want to and OP should not expect them to just because she has asked.

VimFuego101 · 21/08/2017 11:54

She was being an arse not to move when she saw you coming, I don't think smokers realize how bad it smells. Any considerate person would have moved a few feet away.

10/10 for diagram.

That1950sMum · 21/08/2017 11:54

Decaff I now have the image in my head of someone firing up a BBQ at the back of their car in Aldi! Grin

VodkaRevelation · 21/08/2017 11:54

OP, yeah sure. People can smoke wherever they want but wouldn't it be nice if they had some idea of where their smoke aaa blowing. Some do; I've been walking towards people smoking who have removed the cigarettes to the other side or raised them so as not to have them hovering near my kids. Others just want fags around near smallchildren and blow smoke all over the place without thinking about where it will go. She could feel the wind. She could see you there. Regardless of your asthma she should have moved so her smoke was blowing elsewhere. The right to smoke where you want shouldn't trump being considerate to other people.

So YANBU. You were polite. She was a dick.

VodkaRevelation · 21/08/2017 11:54

Love doesn't her angry face in your pic too.

VodkaRevelation · 21/08/2017 11:55

*loved her angry...

VodkaRevelation · 21/08/2017 11:55

Excuse all other typos!

Ijustwantaquietlife · 21/08/2017 11:56

Isn't it banned in plenty of outdoor private places? A Aldi carpark is not a public space.

Smokers do seem to think they are allowed to smoke anywhere outdoors even if the owner of the land has banned it..

Flyingflipflop · 21/08/2017 11:56

No!! OP, you have to stick to your guns for longer than 3 pages!

All that effort with the diagram and you've folded at least 6 pages to early.

I dunno...... they don't make AIBU posters like they used to. Lightweight. Grin

TheFaerieQueene · 21/08/2017 11:58

Can I nominate OP as the official MN artist? The diagram was v good.

gandalf456 · 21/08/2017 11:59

Perhaps go to Waitrose next time. They do 5ltr ones

Sparkletastic · 21/08/2017 12:00

YABU but due to the lovely picture and crimson tide issues I absolve you.
