Hey, just popping in to say hi read a while back it would be heartening to see lurkers delurking to let y'all know we're here. I've actually joined Mumsnet specifically to do this. I'm married to an American and utterly thankful we're living well away from the chaos 45 is inflicting. We've actually ditched plans to get dual-citizenship for our kids til we see the state of the US post-Trump. Totally demoralising times but these threads have helped me keep sane and informed. Cavemum - I've been waiting for that ever since the American Psychologists Association (whatever it's correct name is) opened up the way for people to start assessing his mental health from their desks, having previously (apparently) banned them from so doing.

I fully expect him to be declared mentally incompetent some time before Christmas, and out of the White House by then.

I've dipped in and out of threads before, but haven't been able to follow too closely because my blood pressure can't take it.

Was talking with a group of friends in the pub last night and the topic got onto Bill Clinton's impeachment, and it suddenly struck me how different the world is now. When he said "I did not have sex with that woman", do you remember how much coverage and how much outrage just that one small lie generated? That lie was enough to get him impeached (though there was obviously a lot more going on in the background, but still).

And now look - lies upon lies upon lies, and 45 is still there. It's just so hard to believe where we are now and understand how it's even possible.

Under the 25th Amendment, the vice president and a majority of Cabinet members can jointly declare that a president is unfit to serve. Two-thirds of both the House and Senate would have to vote to force the president's resignation in the event the president refused to cede the Oval Office to the vice president.

Though as it says, should The President fire his cabinet to prevent his own removal it then needs two-thurds of both House and Senste to vote to remove him.

Far easier to get a Cabinet majority (9 people out of 16) than a two-thirds majority of House and Senate (290 from 435 and 51 of 100).

MyOtherProfile I think that is just a rumour really - started by his biographer. I don't think he will resign of his own accord.

What's happening in Jacksonville is very concerning.

Many of us have worried that Trump may try his own Reichstag Fire to seize power.

We CANNOT let this get out of hand.

Lives lost are a tragedy. These murders CANNOT be used to justify extrajudicial killings or trials.

Over the past few days, Trump has primed his base, sending tweets that undermine the rule of law--and encourage extrajudicial killings.

We must remind Americans of lawlessness that appalled Americans.

I suggest we harken back to dictator Erdogan's visit to DC.

The violence outside the Turkish embassy is an example of lawlessness that appalled the right and left.

We can gently remind the American people that such violence and lawlessness is appalling & ALSO that we used the rule of law to address it.

The hopeful thing right now is that MANY prominent folks have jumped the Trump ship. And his national poll numbers are in the tank.

When the Reichstag Fire happened Hitler had already consolidated a great deal of power.

WE ARE NOT THERE YET.

But it is still scary.

BEFORE the Reichstag Fire, the Nazis peddled a lie that there was a plot to take over the government, to stoke the fire.

We are seeing SOME similarities in Trump's rhetoric about both sides. And we must be VIGILANT about this story in Jacksonville.

The shootings tonight COULD be used to say that a massive conspiracy has been found.

So beware if you see that.

But as Nazis consolidated power smaller acts of violence increased.

So as anything with this admin, we must stay hyper-vigilant.

All I can say is be vigilant, be loving and don't forget your own or others' humanity.
