More seriously, I can easily see how the pressure for grants and funding might mean that any kind of deviation is too great a risk. It means your application (which can take a very long time to write) ends on the reject pile. Research doesn't happen and careers suffer.

That's before you get to the whole planet under threat business.

But many academics will fight tooth and nail against censorship.
