AIBU to not understand MRA

I get that in the past women have had it tougher than men in most cultures.

This isn't the case anymore. Men / boys are facing their own challenges yet the term MRA is an insult. Is it because it's been hi-jacked in a similar way to the flag of St George has? If so, what is an unloaded alternative?

If it isn't hi-jacked, why is it used as an insult?

I'm not trying to goad. I just want a balanced answer which Google hasn't provided and I'm not sure any part of MN would either.

Didn't Mike Buchanan used to periodically come on here and make a bit of a tit of himself? I think he had a google alert on his name. Possibly he still has. Hi Mike!

Haven't thought about him for ages, but he is certainly who springs to mind when I think about MRAs.

Are you a fan, OP? You think along very similar lines.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/08/2017 19:39

I think he did

And shall probably be along soon to tell us silly women how it really is Hmm

AltheaThoon · 15/08/2017 20:00

Yes, do shut up, ladies. Listen to the self-proclaimed MRA Hmm

AltheaThoon · 15/08/2017 20:16

MrsDustyBusty I literally can't tell whether your post is serious or satire! I'm hoping the latter...

My first post on MN so hope I get this right.

I am a feminist. The dictionary definition of feminist is anyone who thinks women should not be treated less than men solely on account of their gender. It doesnt mean I think women are better than men, and a man can be a feminist too.

In regards to mens rights, I do believe men get a raw deal in some aspects: people thinking men are pedophiles if they have anything to do with kids, suicide rates & depression, funding / awareness of prostate cancer, men sometimes get discriminated against in female dominated industry, and general sexism against Dads. All those things are important, just as discrimination against females is important. Females and feminists can and do care about these men's issues. Most of us have dads, brothers, sons etc.

But my experience with MRA types is that most want to put down women, insult them or even be violent or threaten rape towards them. A couple of examples were linked to earlier in the thread.
This vocal minority doesnt do men in general any favours

Hope that answers your question OP. To me theres 'mens rights' and then theres MRA.
