AIBU in wanting people to leave off Adult Gamers?

Huffletuff · 06/08/2017 16:55

Following on from a couple of threads recently, people have expressed their distaste for adults that play games. There have been names thrown around such as "man-child" and insults such as immature and childish.

AIBU in thinking that gaming is actually a pretty awesome hobby to have? People read and watch movies and nothing derogatory is said. Gaming involves reading, similar-to-movie story and experiential play, like actually participating in a film.

In tabletop and role-playing gaming such as D&D, imagination is key and experiences are social too, same as a lot of online computer games.

It's harmless, fun, sometimes educational, works the brain and is brilliant for coordination skills. DH and I are avid gamers. We both have consoles and DS very much enjoys them too. Certainly hasn't done him any harm, in fact it's helped his reading and reasoning skills no end.

What I don't understand the most is that people have derogatory things to say about something they either have never experienced, or do not enjoy themselves. Why would somebody slate a hobby that other people clearly enjoy? It's just a nasty thing to do, especially if it has no effect on them.

Also, as a lot of games are rated 18+ and a lot of tabletop and RPGs are quite complicated, they certainly aren't for children anyway.

Utterly bizarre.

DD and SiL are both gamers and they have an active social life around it. So it doesn't mean always staying in

HadronCollider glad you appreciate my name! Maybe I will give it a go sometime..Smile

I spent all of today playing Skyrim, time well spent I say. I don't sneer at people spending their time watching hours worth of soap opera's or shit like TOWIE or Made in Chelsea, so I don't see how sneering at gamers is justifiable. Whatever floats your boat is what I say.

Ontheboardwalk · 08/08/2017 02:16

I used to be a big gamer but for some reason stopped.

I can now waste hours on the internet, watching TV or for my past sins playing crap like candy crush for hours at a time.

I remember after playing the original GTA for days hours when I went out in the real world I had to stop myself trying car doors to see if they were locked. Great fun!

I'd much rather spend my time using my brain to work out how to get through that annoying door or challenge. Think I'll dust off my consoles tomorrow.

For all the gamers, I heartily recommend real life Room Escape games - they really give you that puzzle-solving rush! :)

HadronCollider · 08/08/2017 12:26

Had never heard of them! Have you done them before storm?

YouTheCat - "Which thread, Logical?"

I think it might be the one where a MNer co-sharing a house had her housemate take her Nintendo Switch without permission and allowed her child to damage it.

Some few posters have been critical about both the adult gaming and of the OP of that thread refusing to allow a child access to her game system as they perceive that sort of thing to be childish and so for children.

Even thought the game system was in her private room on a shelf the child couldn't reach and the child's mother had trespassed to gain access to it and took it without permission. Apparently the nature of the item makes it fair game if a child wants it.

By the way, your bookshelves sound very similar to mine. There's virtue in every genre, I think, and who cares if you're reading one book to improve your knowledge base and another because you can switch your brain off for a bit while you read it? There's value in both. People wouldn't want to eat the same food at every meal, why would they want to read the same type of book on a loop?

StormTreader · 08/08/2017 12:46

HadronCollider I have now done 18 and have another 2 planned for the next few months :)

Have a look at ClueHQ as a company that runs them, they'll give you an idea of what theyre about. There are many many other places and companies that run them though (live escape is another multi-location company that are excellent)

Huffletuff · 08/08/2017 12:52

Yes, it was the thread about the damaged Nintendo Switch that made me start this post although I've seen the attitude on many other "LTB" posts, especially the term "man-child".

It does annoy me when many games are 18+.

Not sure I see anything wrong with enjoying childlike things either - growing up is no fun!

If it was a car or other expensive appliance like s phone that was scratched then people would be furious.

elfycat · 08/08/2017 12:59

I online game (and pokemon go) and I creative write. I just can't win. I also sell crystals etc

Gaming is for kids.
Writing stories is pointless unless you plan to publish.
Crystals etc are for the mentally insane.

I have been told, on here, that I need to grow up.

I'm a 46 year old, ex-nurse, mother of 2 and feel I'm as grown up as I'm going to be.

Luckily I'm quite happy in my skin and able to tell people who criticise me to piss off. Others would take comments to heart and they should be left alone to their hobbies.

What you been doing?

I'm trying to 100% the achievements, so I'm grinding through pretty much everything at the minute. Probably gonna get it for the switch when it's released as well, lol.

Willow2017 · 08/08/2017 23:53

Oh god my son does that, and he has about 4 different characters to try out everything as a fighter, magic user etc. He watches you tube vids to see where all the daedric stuff is and goes and gets it. I sometimes watch him to get info though, specially when he finds a secret hoard of stuff Smile

I like my Nord and getting through a quest, exploring all over and upping all my skills and making money Smile

Chalk and cheese!

Ooh I feel a session coming on tomorrow its been too long.
