We're going to have to call a halt to Brexit aren't we?

Lukewarm Remain voter here. Understand that the Government has to listen to 'the will of the people' and all that.

But for the love of God, now that it's clear what absolute economic suicide we're committing surely we've got to put a halt to it whilst the govt and the opposition work out what the fuck's going on!

I don't think committed leavers will ever admit it, but we really should.

EyeHalveASpellingChequer · 31/07/2017 09:54

We should definitely stop the process.

At this time, I struggle to see what benefit we would get from leaving.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/07/2017 09:54

No a vote is a vote. It is what it is.
If we're going to play that game. Can we boot the Conservatives out of power. Didn't think so

CrosswordPuzzle · 31/07/2017 09:56

No.

How do you suggest "we put a halt to it"?

Beebee7 · 31/07/2017 09:56

The leave vote won.

We're leaving.

All these 'hey let's stay instead because of this reason and that reason' games are futile, and a waste of energy and time.

Sorry. We ARE leaving the EU..

waitforitfdear · 31/07/2017 09:57

Don't be silly

noblegiraffe · 31/07/2017 09:57

Of course we can boot the Conservatives out of power Confused we get a chance every 5 years minimum. They had a lot of their power stripped in the recent snap election. A vote doesn't mean a decision made once forever.

liverbird10 · 31/07/2017 09:59

Turkeys voted for Christmas. Doesn't mean Christmas will be cancelled unfortunately. :(

Floisme · 31/07/2017 10:00

The problem is, ignoring the referendum would just be a different form of suicide.

I can't see leavers changing their minds either, no matter how bad things get.

I think we're screwed, I really do.

ShatnersWig · 31/07/2017 10:00

Sorry, Aww but you're starting from a completely false premise, as so many do. A general election is a binding vote, so no, you can't book the Conservatives out of power without another general election. The European referendum was advisory and not binding on any government whatsoever and it could have been totally and utterly ignored by Parliament had they wished.

Whether they SHOULD have chosen to ignore it rather than follow it's advice is another matter entirely, but what you stated is factually incorrect.

Batoutahell · 31/07/2017 10:01

Things have changed. There's no shame in checking the people's will now based on the new information and sentiment.

Laiste · 31/07/2017 10:01

Oh for the love of god i'm sick of hearing from remainers about how they must somehow get their way despite losing the vote. What do you want? Another vote? Best of three? sigh

(and i voted remain)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/07/2017 10:01

Well what's the point of having a vote.
If it can over turned.

AdalindSchade · 31/07/2017 10:02

Sadly not
I mean it's blindingly obvious that it's economic suicide, we are a year on from the vote and no closer to any deals or clarity on what it involves, house prices are dropping and the value of the pound is affected and this is before it's even started. The government has only now commissioned an enquiry into the impact of losing EU workers. It's an absolute shambles.

But it won't be called off.

Laiste · 31/07/2017 10:02

Blame the party who called a vote in the first place. And those who voted them back bloody in again!

WhichJob · 31/07/2017 10:04

Yes we should. This is economic suicide which will have repercussions for generations to come.

The Leave voters were whipped up by politicians and the media which all gave their own agendas. Just think of the web hits all he Brexit stories have given to places like the Daily Mail.

Imagine the policies we could be focusing on now, everything else in this country will be on the back burner. I cannot believe that the Conservatives have been so reckless and gave us a divisive referendum which had such a low threshold. No one actually knew what they were voting for!

WhichJob · 31/07/2017 10:05

House prices are definitely dropping, which some would think is a good think but if the housing market crashes so does everything else and how many of us are in recession proof jobs?

WhichJob · 31/07/2017 10:06

I'm actually jealous of Americans - they are stuck within Trump for now but they will get rid of him but we will be stuck with Brexit unless some takes some difficult decisions and shows true leadership and calls it off.

ShatnersWig · 31/07/2017 10:06

No, I don't want another vote.

I do want our elected politicians to put the best interests of the UK first and if, in their collective opinion, they think ignoring the advisory referendum would better serve those interests, then they should do it. That's why we elect them in the first place - to run this country.

Cameron put party politics before the best interests of the UK and the current mess is the result.

SleepFreeZone · 31/07/2017 10:07

Tighten your belts folks. It's going to get a lot tougher for everyone in the world, not just us.

RainaBaina · 31/07/2017 10:09

It's good that house prices are dropping. People might be able to afford to actually buy one instead of lining the pockets of landlords.

We had a vote. You can't keep re-doing it until you get the result you want. That's not democracy. The will of the majority is to leave the EU.

ShatnersWig · 31/07/2017 10:09

Aww AGAIN, please try and understand, you didn't VOTE. You cast a piece of advice. Perhaps try and grasp it this way. An OP posts a thread asking for advice on MN on whether she should leave her husband. 48 people say she shouldn't, 52 people say she should. She's allowed to take that majority or view. Or not. She does not have to leave her husband just because 52 people said she should if she doesn't think, weighing up all the facts, it would be the best thing to do long term.

WhichJob · 31/07/2017 10:10

Raina, see my previous post.

juneau · 31/07/2017 10:13

It IS economic suicide, as most remainers have known and that's why I voted remain. I get the emotional reasons for leaving, I really do, but good sense was never on the side of leave. Sadly, I think we're stuck with it. The best we can hope for is the softest of soft Brexits. Fortunately, I sense that the mood of the country (and particularly of the idiots in charge), is changing. A touch of reality and some slightly less bombastic rhetoric is finally emanating from number 10. It's about fucking time.

TheNaze73 · 31/07/2017 10:15

I'm a remainer but, was an active remain campaigner however, I think YABU. I'm a fan of the EU but, Blair did Fuck us over, so sadly can see why the leavers voted.
