We're going to have to call a halt to Brexit aren't we?

Lukewarm Remain voter here. Understand that the Government has to listen to 'the will of the people' and all that.

But for the love of God, now that it's clear what absolute economic suicide we're committing surely we've got to put a halt to it whilst the govt and the opposition work out what the fuck's going on!

I don't think it matters any more whether it's legally binding or not. People voted in good faith and if we ignored that, I think we'd be setting ourselves up for problems that would make what we're facing now look like a walk in the park.

I think the only way we might get out of this in one piece would be if people like Boris Johnson stood up and admitted that they lied. That is so not going to happen.

Ceto · 31/07/2017 10:17

No a vote is a vote. It is what it is.

By that token we should never have a General Election. Or we should still be bound by the first EU referendum.

ShatnersWig · 31/07/2017 10:18

Flo They didn't vote. They expressed their opinion.

makeourfuture · 31/07/2017 10:21

I think talk of a transition is the start of a move to stop Brexit. I hope so.

Floisme · 31/07/2017 10:22

Shatner You are correct. But I think the political fallout from ignoring that opinion would be even worse than what we're facing now.

Butterymuffin · 31/07/2017 10:23

I'm a Remainer so biased, but I honestly don't see how any of the 'sunlit upland' future Boris went on about is possible now. Does anybody? Is anyone still thinking the actual plan Hmm to leave is a good one? All I can see is the 'ah but we've voted now, so we've got to do it' argument, which given the poor lookout ahead if we do seems insane. Why do something that's such a bad idea because we said, at a particular point, in a non binding vote, we would?

gamerchick · 31/07/2017 10:24

I had to check the date, I thought it was an old thread. It's saying the same shit all the other ones do.

Ijustwantaquietlife · 31/07/2017 10:24

It should be.

Sadly most brexiters are pig shit thick and are totally ignorant. They are going to be dangerous when they realise that they were played for fools.

RainaBaina · 31/07/2017 10:25

I love how people believe they can "sense the mood of the country" from talking to their friends (self-selected), reading articles online from their (self-selected) website of choice and watching a bit of BBC News (strongly remain supporting).

Hufflepug · 31/07/2017 10:26

we've got to stop all this "we won", "we lost" talk regarding the Referendum. We will ALL be losers if we continue with Brexit. Our elected politicians know this - even the minority who are resolutely gong-ho about leaving haven't got a clue what to do.

I actually think that enough of those who voted leave didn't really understand what they were voting for that perhaps they should have another referendum.

And the irony is that, while a lot of them would have voted leave 'because of the immigrants' it will probably be the case that the numbers of EU nationals living and working in the UK won't change that much after Brexit,

pigsDOfly · 31/07/2017 10:30

It was sheer stupidity to call the referendum in the first place. No one, and that includes parliament, had any idea exactly what the economic and social ramification would be if we left the EU, and the whole thing was fought on lies and misinformation.

Now we're beginning to find out that it's not, as some people seemed to think, a case of voting to leave and it all being done and dusted the next day and we're out. It's not a case of we've voted so off we go and start trading with all those other countries that are desperate to import our wonderful 'British' goods and are going to give us so much better deals than the EU did. And it's not a case of seeing off all the immigrants and closing our borders, as Farage and his cohorts claimed, and thereby getting a lot of voter support for his idiotic views, because actually, as it happens, many businesses here, and large parts of the NHS won't be able to function without them.

It's going to take years to sort out the whole leaving process and probably many more years to put right the ensuing confusion and mess.

But no, I don't think anyone is going to call a halt to Brexit unfortunately. We're going to hell in a handcart but the Brexiteers will be happy because they will have what they want.

Lucisky · 31/07/2017 10:31

I am old enough to have voted yes in 1975 (is that right? So long ago) about joining the EC as it was then. I thought it would be good on a trading level. If at the time they had said do you want to vote for being ruled by european law and all the other things we now have, I would have said no. The EU has become such an unweildy beast. I voted leave, but I think the government are making a complete pigs ear of it, not helped by the EU acting like a spoilt child spurned in the playground. It's a complete mess.

Floisme · 31/07/2017 10:32

There is no point in a further referendum unless we stop being so patronising towards people who voted leave.

gamerchick · 31/07/2017 10:32

we've got to stop all this..... posting these ground hog nothing new to say threads outside of the eu topic that was made just for them? Yes I'm totally up for that.

ShatnersWig · 31/07/2017 10:33

Barbara As there were people being interviewed the morning of the result saying things like "I voted Leave because my husband did" (elderly person) or "I didn't think we would Leave, I'm shocked, I was doing it as a protest vote against the Government" (young person), clearly there were people who didn't have the first clue what they were doing.

I have NO issue with people voting either way from a position of having spent an hour looking into the arguments for both sides and having a genuine position.

Farage said in the run up that if the vote was as close as 52:48 remain he would call for a second referendum. Funny how when it was 48:52 in favour of leave those who wanted to remain were all sore losers.

uk.businessinsider.com/ap-the-latest-maltas-premier-sees-tide-turning-against-brexit-2017-7?r=US&IR=T

Malta's prime minister (they held the EU presidency at the start of this year) says that he is starting to think Brexit won't happen.

But sure, people are just getting the the 'mood of the country' from talking to their self-selected friends. Hmm

Hont1986 · 31/07/2017 10:34

I wish people would shut up about The Will Of The People - it was 52-48 ffs

ShatnersWig · 31/07/2017 10:34

gamer Feel free to leave the thread and not comment then. I haven't seen an MNHQ ruling that people can only post about the EU in the EU topic.

guinea36 · 31/07/2017 10:35

Sadly I think rejoining would be pretty dreadful too. It's unlikely we'd get the same terms as previously. So our contributions might be higher and we could end up in the euro. I think the best we can hope for is for Philip Hammond to get his way and for us to prioritise the economic impact of Brexit over migration. I do think the Government should be throwing cash at areas that have taken the brunt of mass migration so their services can better cope with the strain

Lucisky · 31/07/2017 10:35

Just to add, I also blame David Cameron. He was desperate to win the election, and promising a referendum was a way to garner more votes. He obviously did not expect the result he got. And where is he now? The whole of our government is a self serving disgrace.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 31/07/2017 10:37

gamer

I agree with shatner

If people didnt comment on the thread it would eventually die

Bunnyfuller · 31/07/2017 10:37

So many leavers are now saying 'er....didn't realise this is what leave meant...er...can I change my mind'

This is indeed fucking suicide, shame people didn't look any further than a few media sound bites prior to voting. Unbelievable

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 31/07/2017 10:37

lucisky

Its fucking embarrassing
