Charlie Gard case

AIBU to feel the drama over this poor little boy is not helpful? I read the Pope and Donald Trump were suggesting they help- when several courts have agreed it is in his best interests to let the little boy die with dignity. I feel sorry for him as he may be in pain and it is unfair to add further to false hope for the parents as well. I also feel that many, many people has awful situations where babies die, sadly, for example stillbirths and other cases which are just un-heard and un-noticed and people have to deal with it, so why is there such a huge focus here.

These fundamentalist groups are just driven by their mantra of 'right to life'. They don't give a shit about the medical facts or theories. They don't care about what's best for that poor boy. They don't know if he's in pain or suffering. They've just piggybacked onto the case for a chance to whip up some hysteria.
The Terry Schiavo case was awful, particularly at the end. It was her husband who actually wanted her life ended and the family fought him tooth and nail. He could have walked away and left them to it but he genuinely believed that was right for her. I thought that was impressive.

Anyone*

QuackPorridgeBacon · 07/07/2017 15:04

I just don't understand all the 'posing' the parents seem to do. I've never seen that from any parent in any of the intensive care places I have even with my child.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 07/07/2017 15:04

Been*

Pomegranatepompom · 07/07/2017 15:06

That's terrible Quack really hurtful (I mean what was said to you).

User843022 · 07/07/2017 15:06

'I'm annoyed at whoever reported my comment. I have an idea though'
Might have been me if it was unpleasantly slagging off the family. You may think you are entitled to attack these grief stricken parents but mnhq clearly think different. Take it up with them rather than childishly post 'I can say what I like'. You can't. You don't make the rules.

As I keep on saying, its no different to CA thinking they are 'entitled' to say what they like too.

Sooo much kettle calling the pot black going on on here.

indigo have you read the letter about the new 'treatment'? It's there on the DM page in case you haven't.
This 'treatment' hasn't been tested on anyone with the same illness as Charlie. It hasn't even been tested on mice yet. They make that clear if you read it.

Link for anyone who hasn't seen the letter yet

Quack, I think that the person who reported you will have done it because they think that they are morally superior.

I think I saw the comments towards you on the FB page, really dreadful and I am sorry Flowers.

I don't know if you were here when the Dax story was posted, lots of thread policing there too because it was a sensitive subject.

It ended up being banned completely and going off board to a closed FB group.

Stopnamechanging · 07/07/2017 15:13

indigop, lots of us are Drs and nurses actually.

muckypup73 · 07/07/2017 15:13

indigop, you will find that a lot of people have researched the condition, unlike a lot of people that follow like sheep, There are 16 people in the world that have had the condition and 16 people that have died, maybe your mob should be ashamed of themselves setting up mobs to protest against a hospital, a hospital that is saving many many lives. Go and do some research before you call anyone else please.

User843022 · 07/07/2017 15:17

'I think that the person who reported you will have done it because they think that they are morally superior'
Well again, if it was me then no. I'm not 'morally superior'.
I can agree that the campaign is wrong and misguided. I agree that the patient should have a peaceful death if improvement has been proved to be impossible.
I can't agree with name calling whether its from CA or mumsnetters. Just really unpleasant to read some of the 'grabby' type comments on here.

Inkanta · 07/07/2017 15:18

I am in support of the parents. They have raised enough money for new treatment and have also been offered help from the US. I hope they can be enabled to this through. Best wishes to them.

SerfTerf · 07/07/2017 15:18

I stopped listening to you when you called people "vegetables" @indigop

You don't seem to want to engage with the arguments, either.

TheWeeWitch · 07/07/2017 15:19

@indigop no shame here, rather, thoughtful and considered discussion of a difficult ethical issue.

Stopnamechanging · 07/07/2017 15:20

MyrtleMaracas, that's fine as is your right.
You have reported the Facebook page for the threats and abuse too?

hulahooper9876 · 07/07/2017 15:20

Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt, indigop. You clearly fall into the latter category.

taytopotato · 07/07/2017 15:22

Indigo a lot of people have read the court judgments as well. It's very detailed.

User843022 · 07/07/2017 15:22

'You have reported the Facebook page for the threats and abuse too?'
Why would I? we aren't on fb are we Confused. The pp objected to a post here being reported. I said if you post unpleasant attacks then mnhq will delete its simple.

Stopnamechanging · 07/07/2017 15:23

@indigop no shame here, rather, thoughtful and considered discussion of a difficult ethical issue

I agree, it's a discussion that is intelligent and thoughtful, MNHQ have been pretty good at letting it run and not be policed too much.

Very few places where you can do this.

DarthMaiden · 07/07/2017 15:23

indigo this is what I posted on another thread in response to another accusation such as yours...

In addition to what I wrote below I'd also say that because of patient confidentiality, doctors treating Charlie are not able to refute many of the erroneous and incorrect statements being made (such as the one you cite in your post) that suggest a cure is possible. This does not make them true. What is means is we have a biased and unbalanced narrative, which is loaded in favour of the wishes of the parents rather than the reality of Charlie's condition and prognosis.

The fact is that many of the posters feel a huge sense of compassion and empathy for his parents situation, some as they have sadly faced similar scenarios.

However being sad and sympathetic to their position doesn't also have to equate with either understanding or even agreeing with the way in which they, their wider family and supporters have sometimes conducted themselves.

The accusations, falsehoods and abuse being posted on social media sites controlled unchecked by the family about GOSH, potential treatments and the severity of their child's treatment is very concerning.

It's impacting the reputation and funding of an excellent hospital and in turn their ability to care for many other desperately ill children.

It also must be hugely distressing to families who have accepted medical advice to withdraw life support to read posts that insinuate (or outright state) that that decision was murder.

User843022 · 07/07/2017 15:24

'Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt, indigop. You clearly fall into the latter category'

Charming. yes indigo agree with people on here or you're a fool

Stopnamechanging · 07/07/2017 15:25

MyrtleMaracas that's a silly response as the whole thread is about the threats to GOSH etc, so to participate, you will have looked at the page, otherwise you can't really can you?

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 07/07/2017 15:26

No shame here either.
Sadly, I expect this thread to be deleted if it descends into a bunfight, which is exactly what some are trying to provoke.

Stopnamechanging · 07/07/2017 15:27

Yes, it's exactly what they want, let's ignore.
