To ask if you voted Tory, would you now change your mind?

Hey.

I don't want to start a debate but I am quite worried about DUP being in the position that they are now. I am totally relying on the information from the media with regards to their views etc, but I'm worried about what this holds for us.

I wondered for anyone that voted Tory, now they have a coalition with DUP, would you change your vote?

I'd love to hear everyone's views. I am not politically minded and as I said, a lot of what I read and understand is unfortunately from the media. With 2 little ones, reading the paper online is about as much as I can do!

Please do not come down on me if this is a silly post, I am genuinely interested xx

No, I voted Tory becos I would never vote Labour becos I don't want to be a welfare state, I don't think JC could negotiate a Brexit debate / I think he's too left wing. Personally I actually find it embracing and insulting that people insinuate that I'm 'embarrassed' that I vote Tory which is why I don't talk about it - I don't talk about it becos it's unclassy to discuss politics and the sort of people who have 'vote Labour' signs in their windows to me are a joke

PlayOnWurtz · 10/06/2017 22:37

No. I voted for our local MP because of what they do for our area. I will never vote Labour and our lib dem candidate is a twat.

babybythesea · 10/06/2017 22:39

Swanlake - round here it's all Vote Tory boards. With the odd lib dem one. Is that ok or is it only expressing an affiliation to Labour that's a joke?
Slightly tongue in cheek response, as I can't imagine putting up any sort of board - doesn't change people's minds, just creates yet more shit to be thrown away.

Rabbityrabbitcarrot · 10/06/2017 22:40

No i am still happy

babybythesea · 10/06/2017 22:43

Time4chocolate (love the username!) Maybe JC would deal with the Saudis if he got in. But you can't hold something against the man when he hasn't done it, only hypothetically might. What interests me is holding something against him from 2 decades ago while forgiving TM the same thing.
And I'm not a Corbynista. Belong to a political party that isn't Labour. I just really really can't wrap my head around the mindset that says it's not ok for him to talk to the IRA 20 years ago but it's fine for her to talk to the Saudis and the DUP,both of which are complicit in terrorist acts.

Riversleep · 10/06/2017 22:45

What I don't understand is why she even had to do an arrangement with the DUP anyway. Sinn Fein don't take their seats and the DUP vote with the Tories anyway. She didn't need to do a deal with them that might mean giving them some power over the government. They would have got support without having to negotiate anything with them. She will lose more than 10 Tory MP's if she goes anywhere near gay marriage but what about abortion? How many Tories would rebel if she panders to them on that?

Riversleep · 10/06/2017 22:49

Swanlake in case you hadn't noticed, we have had a welfare state for 60+ years already. Most of that under a Tory government.

time4chocolate · 10/06/2017 23:01

Babybythesea😊- i'm by no means a staunch Tory, I have voted all main flavours over the years so I'm probably not the right person to answer your points. However, having been caught up in an IRA bombing on my 13th birthday his links put him (and so the Labour Party) right at the bottom of people/parties I would vote for, that doesn't mean I am 100% behind TM but am prepared to see what happens over the next few weeks before I make a judgement.

Thiscantreallybehappening · 10/06/2017 23:08

BandeauSally - do you have any other ideas then? Labour can't form a minority government - the numbers don't add up. Do you think the country should immediately hold another General Election?

MrsJoyOdell · 10/06/2017 23:13

Anyone can, technically, form a ministry government. Whether they'd survive any votes in the commons and actually be able to govern is another story.

babybythesea · 10/06/2017 23:27

Time4chocolate. Fair enough. I grew up on the edge of London and had 2 close calls with bombs/potential bombs so I'm not unaware of the horrific impact of the IRA. I just, as I say, don't see TMs associations with the Saudis in a different light. And if anything, it's worse because it's current.

What do you think a welfare state is? You are aware, are you not, that we have a welfare system in the UK? You know, to support people who need help because they're out of work, or ill,?

Why would being left wing mean someone couldn't negotiate a Brexit deal?

Why is it 'unclassy' to discuss politics? By that reckoning, the whole of the media is not worth considering! Or are you just not clever enough to deal with the debating and intellectual/philosophical thought that lies behind political discussions?

Why is displaying your support for a political party a joke?

Why do you keep spelling 'because' 'becos'?

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 11/06/2017 03:29

Yes..you'd want to be destitute if you lost your job and couldn't find another, or became disabled? Strange.

NeoNeoClassical · 11/06/2017 04:20

I'd campaign harder so that the Cons had an overall majority.

scaryteacher · 11/06/2017 06:10

I'd vote Tory again; for me there re no credible alternatives.

As for the country does need to have a functioning Government..moot point. Belgium went 541 days without one in 2010-11. From a domestic point of view, everything functioned as normal, and there was no discernible difference.

sashh · 11/06/2017 06:57

I wouldnt change my vote (didnt vote tory) but as we live in a very safe tory seat it wouldnt make any difference

Kensington has been Tory since WWI, it has gone to Labour by 20 votes. One constituency it was 3 votes.

Votes these days do make a difference

user1495961005 · 11/06/2017 06:58

Yes I'd vote Tory again, Corbyn and his acolytes are horrors who would continue quietly fucking over the country in the same way their predecessors did.

The tories need to rein back austerity though, and spend more time actually listening to ordinary people living ordinary lives.

All Westminster politicians live in bubbles.

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 11/06/2017 06:59

Instead of loudly and proudly fucking it over and causing havoc

Twooter · 11/06/2017 07:05

Would still vote Tory. Curious if all those who begged people to vote labour to stop May from getting a reasonable majority, believe we are in a better position now rather thanTory alone.

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 11/06/2017 07:06

Yes

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 11/06/2017 07:07

She has a pathetic majority even if allowed to go ahead with the dubious coalition, And there is a stronger opposition.

user1471545174 · 11/06/2017 07:54

I really hope she steps down. I'd actually rather see the coalition of chaos in charge. There would at least be entertainment value in seeing JC sparking off the SNP, trying to herd his loony wing, failing to deliver on his unfunded promises and driving business out of the UK by increasing corporation taxes during Brexit (because it appears we are stuck with bloody Brexit whoever is in power).

As for the Tories, I'd like Ken Clarke to step in as interim manager and throw a bucket of cold water over everyone and send them off for a proper think.

I want no party I vote for to be in bed with terrorist sympathisers of ANY description, be that British, Irish, Islamicist or other.

makeourfuture · 11/06/2017 07:58

Awful beliefs.

Awful coalition.

Dragongirl10 · 11/06/2017 08:00

I woulds still vote Conservative, as although May made a absolutely terrible hash of the election, bringing out silly smaller policies, and not talking about the most important issues, ie the economy and Brexit issues.

The Conservative are, imo, the only party that are likely to get us safely through the minefield of Brexit and keep the economy steady.

Also Corbyns terror sympathiser ideals are horrific to me.

TittyGolightly · 11/06/2017 08:06

Nobody voted for what we've got- that's what gets me. How is this democracy? Nobody wants this

There are different kinds of democracy. We have never had direct democracy - where you vote directly for a president/leader. We have representational democracy - you vote for your local representative and the rest follows from that.
