I've just had to goggle Lyn brown (and only learnt that she swore at a blind man). Realised I know v little about McDonnell either. AIBU to think that he's been kept hidden because he might spoil cuddly JC's image?

In May 2003, he made controversial comments about the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), saying: "It's about time we started honouring those people involved in the armed struggle. It was the bombs and bullets and sacrifice made by the likes of Bobby Sands that brought Britain to the negotiating table. The peace we have now is due to the action of the IRA."[17]
According to a report in The Times published in November 2015, McDonnell in 1985 made similar comments at a Labour Committee on Ireland meeting, before the start of the Northern Ireland peace process. The Deptford Mercury asserted at the time that McDonnell had suggested there was a role for "the ballot, the bullet and the bomb" in bringing about a United Ireland, and joked about "kneecapping" the "gutless wimp" Labour councillors who had declined to join the meeting.[19]
In 2015, McDonnell's name appeared on a letter calling for the armed police and MI5 to be disbanded. He claimed that he had not signed the letter, which was produced by the Socialist Campaign for a Labour Victory (SCLV), but he was photographed holding a copy of the letter, although he later said that he did not know that the demand was on the letter.[29][30

Dawn, you think I shouldn't have googled the pretty much unknown person who wants to be Home Secretary the day after tomorrow?! Why on earth not? JC has left it so late to replace DA how else are we meant to assess her?

Dawndonnaagain · 07/06/2017 12:04

notanew, you're running through a lot of threads having a go at Labour voters. Most odd
Waitforit, do grow up, dear. Oh, and learn the difference between communism and socialism.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 07/06/2017 12:05

An awful sickness bug going round the Labour party atm

As we don't know how ill Diane Abbott is that is in rather poor taste.

Sittinonthefloor · 07/06/2017 12:06

And why is it goady to wonder why the man who wants to be chancellor on Friday has been invisible during the campaign?

Funnily enough you are on same threads, Dawn.

Sittinonthefloor · 07/06/2017 12:11

Dawn, I'm beginning to suspect you have had to google john McDonnell too!

But just about all of the major political figures are hiding, when Tory or Labour.

I was listening to the Today programme on Radio 4 this morning, the last campaigning day of the election, and they reported that they'd asked both May and Corbyn if they'd like to come on and they'd both declined.

The entire Tory campaign has been based on "vote for us because of what we're not". The entire Labour campaign has been based on "vote for us because of what we'll give you but we can't".

Both sides, breathtakingly rubbish. It's amazing.

waitforitfdear · 07/06/2017 12:16

dawn I do know the difference dear that's why I have left labour and am voting Tory with a heavy heart.

Pity the stupid idiots who voted for Corbyn have abandoned socialism.

And stop telling people what they can post and where it's none of your business just add your posts and debate properly.

Charmageddon · 07/06/2017 12:19

All v sus as at one point we only ever heard from him and I wondered where jC was. Actually has anyone ever seem them in one place? Is that beard actually a disguise? Maybe JC appears as j mc when he wants to say what he really thinks?

waitforitfdear · 07/06/2017 12:19

Tw

Get over yourself if Dianne is indeed ill of course as a human being I wish her health but she's not some wonderful mother Theresa figure we all must speak of in hushed tones.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 07/06/2017 12:24

I am not saying that she is Mother Theresa although despite being a saint she was actually very far from being one - but that is another thread.

I just think that on the day when her ill health has been announced it seems in rather poor taste to joke about it. I didn't even say you couldn't take the piss out of an ill woman - just said it was in poor taste.

Hopefully it is nothing major and then you can get back to having a go at her full throttle

notanewuser · 07/06/2017 12:27

Dawn - I am :-) as are you. You can see I have been here for yonks as well.

waitforitfdear · 07/06/2017 12:28

Racist remarks and telling us 'mao was a good leader is in pretty poor taste but anyway there you go.

shoehorn shoehorn, such desperation

BabsGanoush · 07/06/2017 12:30

He'll be busy fiddling the numbers - just like he did when in GLC and was sacked by Ken Livingstone for being too red.

Charmageddon · 07/06/2017 12:34

Crikey Monkey, you're all over the threads protecting Lyn Brown's 'good' reputation!

Are you her PA?!

Sittinonthefloor · 07/06/2017 12:35

Monkey - no shoehorning, hadn't heard of her, googled, and the blind man shoving thing is by far the most interesting thing she's done! Her Wikipedia entry is v short - only other notable thing was not paying interns. No details on how she'd counter the terrorist threat or anything useful like that!

dawn apologies, never knew Abbott was ill.

makeourfuture · 07/06/2017 12:39

The current regime's choices for chancellor have:

  • left our nation in exploding debt.
  • strangled economic growth.
  • left needed services underfunded....with the result that our streets are unsafe, our NHS services are struggling and our schools crumbling.
NoLotteryWinYet · 07/06/2017 12:39

Reasons I'm not keen on McDonnell:

  1. I see no evidence that he believes in markets - managed or otherwise. Since the world is capitalist entirely now with greater or smaller degrees of market intervention, that's a worry. Not understanding or accepting the international markets as they are now doesn't mean you won't be punished by them.
  2. I see nothing in the labour manifesto encouraging private sector growth - only raising costs on firms. Not all firms are tax-dodging multinationals.
makeourfuture · 07/06/2017 12:41

Austerity kills growth.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/06/2017 12:42

sacked by Ken Livingstone for being too red.

You must admit that's quite an achievement.

Stickerrocks · 07/06/2017 12:44

Apart from the Maybot & Amber Rudd, the conservative making most headlines has been George Osborne. It's basic marketing to promote your strongest performers and try to keep the others out of the limelight. That's why Yvette Cooper was brought out earlier in the week, as she can be trusted to open her mouth without putting her foot in in. That's why the Tories took a huge gamble letting Bojo out in public a couple of days ago. Of course, the Lib Dems are a little restricted on numbers, so they can only produce Tim & Nick.
