Telling my Tory voting mother that she should pay for my daughter to go to university.

My DD is very bright and could go to university if she doesn't arse about trying to be cool like I did. She is now 12.
My mum often talks about what she might do at university when she is older. I have been considering discouraging her from going because of the cost, we cannot afford to fund it ourselves unfortunately and she will have huge debt. It's kind of light hearted but I feel like telling my Tory voting mother that she should pay for her to go as she is not interested in voting to change this.

It's ironic isn't it when labour took away free education.

As it was Labour who introduced tuition fees a number of years before your dd was born, you'd better tell her not to vote for Labour either.

Well you have 6 years to improve your situation to help dund her education. Failing that she will be allowed to borrow to fund her education, if she works hard and attains a good degree her future earning would pay those costs over time.

Labour introduced fees and the conservatives have kept them and increased them. Six of one and half a dozen of the other!

I am aware of who introduced the tuition fees and that the tories supported it, but there is an opportunity to change this now and it is not by voting Tory.

Please do not discourage your daughter from going to university because she will have debt afterwards! A debt she may never earn enough to pay and if she does she will be earning enough to pay. Seriously.

She's 12 so I wouldn't be planning her future just yet love she may choose not to go to uni and do am apprentership or go straight to work.

Your post is a bit silly as labour introduced the fees the Tories invresddd them and the only reason labour is talking about abolishing them is that they can't do simple maths costings and they won't get in anyway to fail.

Eh, what? That'll be the labour government education fees then? So move to scotland in the meantime for free higher education (whilst it lasts). I assume your child isn't at private school (labour private school fees vat proposal).

Did your mum support your higher education? Why should she fund your child - she's not responsible?

You don't have to fund it, she can get a loan like students have for several years now.

OP, you should read Martin Lewis's excellent article on Money Saving Expert for why you shouldn't view tuition fees as a "debt".

Well neither me or my DP will earn much more in 8 years unless we retrain, can't afford to do this either. My DP works 70+ hours running his business so please don't say we are not trying.

Grow up OP. It's great that she's encouraging and building up your dds confidence. Stop being a petulant child to your mum.

If Labour get in we'll all be paying through our taxes for your daughter's higher education and the opportunities it gives her to become a high earner. How is that any fairer than asking your daughter to pay once she's earning that higher salary?

From what I read on here. Students are heavily subsidised by parents when they are at university.

I think the OP's point is not who introduced them but the fact that Labour are going to abolish them if they get into power.
Her mother voting Tory shows a lack of support for the abolishment of tuition fees which would mean if her granddaughter goes to university as OP's mother wants her to do then she will leave in debt.
I can see your logic OP and I would certainly (jokingly) go along with your suggestion.

YANBU. People don't seem to realise that in a democracy every single person's vote counts. People should be making decisions based on what they believe is best for everyone, not just themselves.

Under Labour, if you were from a mid/low income family, you were given a 3K bursary which covered the fees which were 3K. Under Torys, the bursary was scrapped, and fees escalated to 9K per year! It is ridiculous that students are under Torys left with at least 30-40K debt!!

Your daughter is very lucky to have a grandmother who encourages her.

But she won't pay a penny until she gets a well paid job, if she gets a well paid job surely she'll be happy to give back I certainly will be and I'm not a Tory voter.

I see your point OP - what a cow your DM is for encouraging her DGM to fulfil her potential whilst not voting for the party that introduced tuition fees...
