To have 'humiliated' my MIL

ImALurkerNotAFighter · 07/05/2017 11:22

MIL has an awful tendency to do 'penis portions'. I'd avoided staying with her for a few years, as when breastfeeding she'd served up a tiny inadequate meal, then told me she hadn't done a plate for DS as 'he could just have some of mine' Angry This was on top of sly little digs about my weight.
So MIL wanted us to stay this weekend so she could spend time with the DC. DH usually goes alone but apparently as I'm free this weekend it would be rude for me not to come. They very kindly babysat the asleep DC while we went to the pub. This morning MIL does breakfast for us and SIL and BIL. I get 1 small sausage, 1 half piece of bacon, 1 egg and a small slice of dry toast. MIL and SIL have similar. DH, FIL and BIL get 3 large sausages, 2 bacon, 2 eggs, beans and black pudding. I asked MIL if there was any more, she looked shocked and said no.
I was very cross at this point and walked round the table, took half the sausage, black pudding and beans off a very quiet DH to even it up (we were both left with pretty equal quantities) and sat back down.
MIL feels I have humiliated her, and 'at your size you clearly don't realise that was a proper breakfast '. I'm a size 18, so yes, fat.
I'm fuming and want to leave now. DH wants to stay and take them out for lunch as planned.
I know there are mumsnetters out there who believe the wimminz should subsist on a lettuce leaf and a sniff of meat, but sensible people of mumsnet WIBU? AIBU to pack the DC and leave?

I think a full breakfast has (per person) 2 sausages, 2 bacon, 1 black pudding, lots of mushrooms, 2 halves of large tomato ( or 4 cherry tomatoes), fried bread ( whole slice), fried potato (if any cooked potatoes around), and as many eggs are required. Toast is always available. Always washed down with freshly squeezed orange juice.

reetgood · 07/05/2017 21:41

It's not about the adequacy of the breakfasts! It's about deciding for another adult how much they get to eat! That is rude and not acceptable.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 07/05/2017 21:41

"your repeatedly say that this breakfast is adequate. What planet you on?"
Quite a few agree, while it may not be the point it is relevant really. Awaits 'but the op wanted more' posts..

It isn't relative because of the difference in sizing between the mens and the women's portions and the fact that the men were provided with additional items not offered to the women.

Sylvannas · 07/05/2017 21:41

I can't stop thinking about the bacon.
No crispy fat on the bacon
....sigh

That's just not proper Bacon.

Where we're the tomatoes and mushrooms?

It's all.such a shame. Fry ups can be so awesome. Sad

BaronessEllaSaturday · 07/05/2017 21:42

relevant not relative.

JudeeLevinson · 07/05/2017 21:43

She wouldn't have kicked off if the breakfast was adequate. But that is only one of the various ways in which the MIL was rude, I agree.

MissBax · 07/05/2017 21:44

People need to chill out, it's one breakfast, she's hardly going to starve. She wasn't specifically picking on the OP, it's what she served herself and OP's SIL too. Yes a bit odd but obviously just her way. Just eat it and get on with your day.

Pro Fat propaganda, being Fat is not a good thing and something to calibrate.

You've clearly missed the parts where the OP said it's an ongoing problem that has caused problems in the past and her MIL persists in deciding what the OP should eat.

MissBax · 07/05/2017 21:51

And you clearly missed my previous post where I said the MIL has no right to comment on her weight and her DH should really be saying something too. I still think people are getting way too worked up over what is acceptable or unacceptable for a breakfast. If someone feeds me something, I'm grateful. And if I think it's stingey I'll make up for it by stuffing my face later on.

JustcallMeKate Out of interest what do people class as a weekend fry up? If I have anyone staying over I normally make links, square sausage, black pudding, haggis or fruit pudding, bacon, eggs, potato scones or fried bread, beans, and fried bubble and squeak, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast.

I don't actually like fry ups but DH and one of the DC DPs do and we are a mixed veggie/non veggie house. I'd generally have the eggs/sausage/bacon/beans/tomatoes/mushroom type stuff for those who eat it. Poached eggs with spinach or beans/grilled tomatoes/mushrooms on toast, maybe veggie sausages, omelettes etc for those who like cooked but not fried. Bubble and Squeak if there is left over potato, otherwise toast/bread.
Fruits/yogurts/croissants/cereals for those who don't like hot.
Quantities based on demand although i err on the ample catering side for guests. This would all be if we had a houseful for a big weekend and a long wait before lunch!

I'm dying to know though - what are "square sausage, links and fruit pudding" in the fried breakfast world? Google produces some odd looking answers.

KermitRuffinsTrumpet · 07/05/2017 21:52

not for someone who thinks half a bacon is ok

ragged · 07/05/2017 21:54

Where were the tomatoes and mushrooms?

I felt rather agitated about that, too! :)

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/05/2017 21:55

No hash browns either...

robinia · 07/05/2017 21:57

This is why I don't 'plate up' food.
Far easier to let everyone help themselves instead of applying some arbitrary rule that all men need more calories than all women.
I'd be fuming too. I eat more than dh at meals because I'm more active than him and I don't snack between meals.

JustCallMekate · 07/05/2017 22:00

what are "square sausage, links and fruit pudding

I've attached photos for you. I'm in Scotland. Square sausage is like a flat sausagemeat, link sausage is probably what I'd class a normal sausage and fruit pudding is white pudding with fruit in.

Have we had lunch yet?

Bluntness100 · 07/05/2017 22:03

Is anyone else finding this funny? 😂

We've got one poster going on about trans folks and fat people, another repeatedly insisting the breakfast was adequate for the op, whilst comptely ignoring and contrary to the ops own opinion on that score, and then a lot of others going on about their preferred breakfast choices.

Personally I like some scrambled egg, sausage and mushrooms. Yumtastic, oh and i prefer to serve myself thank you very much as I'm all grown up now. 😂

Mum2jenny · 07/05/2017 22:05

Love square sausage and fruit pudding when I can get it. I can buy it when I'm in Scotland visiting my mum though. Food of the gods!

ImALurkerNotAFighter · 07/05/2017 22:05

My. After 5 hours crawling down the bloody motorway this thread is still going strong!
Lunch was fine. MIL sat at the other end of the table and had a salad.
SIL and I had roasts and pudding (lunch was 3pm so late enough to be hungry)
I suspect in future we'll go back to them coming to us, where there will be generous portions for all. Despite the temptation to feed MIL childs portions.
There are a lot of people with fucked up attitudes to food on mumsnet!

JustCallMeKate

Thankyou - I've never seen square sausage in Scotland but I'm a veggie so it could easily have been under my nose and I wouldn't notice!

The white pudding looks like spotted dick Grin. Presumably the fruit balances out the fat a bit and gives it a sweet tang?

Lweji · 07/05/2017 22:07

And you clearly missed my previous post where I said the MIL has no right to comment on her weight and her DH should really be saying something too.

I didn't, because I made no reference to your opinion on that subject. :)

Just on your comment that it was one breakfast.

JudeeLevinson · 07/05/2017 22:07

arguing the breakfast was adequate and completely ignoring her OWN practice on that score as well as the OP's opinion.
