To think that some left-wing supporters are just so NASTY

cathf · 22/04/2017 14:22

This is based on posts I have read on here and a couple of very vocal left-wing friends I have on facebook.
I have truly never read a Conservative supporter personally attacking Labour in the same way.
I find it astonishing and if I am honest, a bit childish.
Recent examples include a website pulling Teresa May's living room apart and costing out every single thing in it, to a chorus of comments along the lines of how can she sleep at night when children are hungry and she has a £25 candle.
Every time the subject is raised on here, there is a long thread of hysterical comments about how nasty the Tories are. Yes, Tory supporters state their case and answer back, but they seem to be able to do it in a more restrained, mature manner than outraged Labour screamers.
There seems to be a lot of personal bile aimed at Teresa May, which I am at a loss to understand - just what has she done that is so terrible?
She is pushing through Brexit, but that was what the country voted for. Is she supposed to go against the country's wishes?
All of Labour's policies look very lovely, but none have any substance at all. My friend recently stated on Facebook she was supporting Jeremy Corbyn because he wanted peace not war. And? How is he going to implement that then? It reminds me of the 1980s T-shirts stating War is Stupid. Lots of nice words, but to implementation strategies.
It amazes me that supposedly intelligent people seem to be so brainwashed by this nonsense and think that flinging mud is an appopriate way to behave.
Is it just me?

The left

You regularly complain about being criticised for being a Tory voter. Yet respond by suggesting "the left" are some sort of homogenous mass rather than a group of individuals with individual thoughts etc.

Do I think all Tory voters are cunts? Absolutely not:
Do I understand why people vote Tory? Absolutely not.

Fruitboxjury · 22/04/2017 15:13

It's more likely that they're just nasty people who identify with a particular political bias and feel empowered by the herd mentality within it... left, right or whatever in between.

Perhaps being more extreme left or right wing helps them to find a group of ideologically like minded people in which they can play out their nasty identity under the veil of political rather than personal agendas.

The most left wing person I know is a complete bitch. But she is so in every area of her life if you watch her closely, it's just that politics seem to bring out the sneering, jealousy, manipulation and self-indulgent bullshit very worst in her.

scottishdiem · 22/04/2017 15:13

Politics has got nastier across the board. Look at how women here on Mumsnet treat Nicola Sturgeon as a clear example.

The reasons for this are multiple. We are, generally, more informed of politics due to social media, popular forums and even 24 hour news agendas. Of course, that doesnt mean we are generally better informed. We have our own bubbles that become self justifying and there are no real checks and balances on behaviour.

Money is a lot tighter for many many people. On the left that means we know and see and feel the deaths of disabled people who were desperate for state support. On the right that means money they have worked hard for is being taxed away from them and that some solutions for societies problems (e.g. have money thrown at them) are ineffective. It can be, literally, a waste of money.

The gap between these two positions is somewhat unbridgable these days. Its not just about money and taxes or even left and right. Take immigration - people on the left can be just as authoritarian about "controlling our own borders" as the BNP. The problem here is that immigration can be used by both left and right as the source of so many problems. Even if 99% of the evidence regarding immigration is mince. My DP and I now live in Dublin. My DP has a degree, postgraduate degree and two professional qualifications. In Ireland DP is a high tax rate payer. I am not sure whose job DP took after about 10 years of learning to annoy the left with foreigners taking jobs. On the right I can at least see that DP being black is an issue.

As you can see, we all take our personal experiences that help form our opinions. And every negative experience informs us far more than positive ones.....

"The left is made up of some principled people and very many nasty, vindictive, bitter c*nts"

The left is made up of mostly principled people, with very good intentions.

There is a lot more abuse handed out by the right wing that is going unmentioned here. All the mockery of Corbyn, Katie Hopkins etc, the Mail, Express, Sun, the reporting of anything Miliband did.

Lets be honest, its far more one way than it is the other and its not the left.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 22/04/2017 15:14

Yes Statistically, Tory is definitely an insult in Glasgow and most of Scotland

With pretty good reason!

LookMoreCloselier · 22/04/2017 15:15

I find the way you are talking about 'lefties' so incredibly patronising, and this is something I have come across away from MN 'wishy washy lefties, so naive, that will never work' etc. Right ok, so never mind trying to make things more equal then, it has to be the status quo where all the money is at the top.. because I'm alright jack. Hopefully they will all just pipe down and stop being so nasty.

limitedperiodonly · 22/04/2017 15:15

The left celebrated the death of Maggie. We didn't celebrate the death of countless left wingers.

And Kenny Everett said he wanted to bomb Russia and kick at the 1983 Conservative conference and Margaret Thatcher didn't say a dickie bird.

There is no accounting for the best possible taste.

HorridHenryrule · 22/04/2017 15:16

Left wing screamers when was this every time I watch them they seem to have nothing to say. Brexit will bring a lot of hardship to a lot of families. A family member told me we are going back to the 70's. I was born in the 80's anyone remember the 70's?

HollywoodStunt · 22/04/2017 15:17

There seems to be a lot of personal bile aimed at Teresa May, which I am at a loss to understand - just what has she done that is so terrible?

She single handedly destroyed my marriage for one thing, along with fifteen thousand others, if you really want to know

Anyone who's no rich who can't see the evil side of the Tories either doesn't understand politics and how it affects them or doesn't understand that most the MSM in the UK is right wing

This is based on posts I have read on here and a couple of very vocal left-wing friends I have on facebook

Far too small a sample to be representative and shows nothing other than you're looking in the wrong places. I'd say try BBC HYS if you want to see some real hateful right wingers in action but you already seem to have made up your mind that they don't exist

In the end it's a good thing that people engage in politics, there's little more frustrating than someone who didn't vote then complaining about the result

RintelsPoint · 22/04/2017 15:18

We dont have to be nice about people who are doing so much harm to others - it's just the right wingers don't want to hear it.

This.

Having said that, I have noticed a weird, self-rightous twattery from the occasional left-winger, shutting down debate etc - and it's always been men. It's men who say "fuck of and die Tory scum". It's men who want to be violent at protests. It's not about left/right politics, it's about self-entitled men wanting some glory and an excuse to be a dickhead whilst convincing themselves they are so right-on.

PinkCrystal · 22/04/2017 15:18

I don't have a problem with people voting for any party unless it is one that hurts disabled people, poor people and public services.

The80sweregreat · 22/04/2017 15:18

I can see where your coming from - the things in her room are paid for by her wages which all politicians get and her husband also works too - pulling someone apart for having a nice home isnt on. However, i have also seen personal attacks on Corbyn, his past isnt that great either and he has a lot of 'baggage' too. They are all as bad as each other i;m afraid and its the people that suffer.
I cannot vote Conservative though - austerity, cuts to the welfare bill, school cuts, these are things that interest me more as a voter and seem morally wrong. Others disagree with me, but thats democracy of course.

lostatsea1 · 22/04/2017 15:19

I think you are right - left wingers say nasty things about the tories - the tories do not say nasty things they just do utterly vile things that destroy people's lives and seem to enjoy it.

EdithWeston · 22/04/2017 15:19

I think the level of political debate has fallen, and it's more a case -online - of who makes the most noise to dominate a site.

MN has always been left-leaning, but has become distinctly nastier of late. The slagging off of the Tories is so endemic that I think people barely notice how nasty and personalised it actually is - it's more like a barrage of insults than any kind of actual debate.

The times when MN political threads were worthy of attention - including from senior politicians - is long gone.

taratill · 22/04/2017 15:19

I have received several personal insults today for my views that Tory policies, which seek to dismantle our public services and disadvantage the most needy in our society do nothing to 'Make Britain Great'.

That's my view.

To which I've been told to get my eyes tested to see 'the truth' as I must be blind and it has been suggested I leave the country if I don't like it.

Nice.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 22/04/2017 15:20

I agree with you OP.

I participate in a few political forums. Labour supporters are infinitely worse than your average Conservative voter. It's pure bile. The forums I participate in have in excess of 70,000 members, of all parties.

scottishdiem · 22/04/2017 15:21

"There seems to be a lot of personal bile aimed at Teresa May, which I am at a loss to understand - just what has she done that is so terrible?"

She said I should no longer live in Scotland and that I should move to Zimbabwe. My DP was there as a child but never as an adult but, hey ho, we dont want those nasty black foreigners here so lets just send the idiot whites who married them to countries that they have no ties to, no chance of a job or even a functioning economy and on the verge of civil war.

Now, to be fair, she only reiterated a decision made by the previous Labour Home Secretary so I dont see the UK as my country. I see Scotland as my country as the only politicians who cared were SNP ones. Hence I support independence to actually have a humane immigration system.

lostatsea1 has it. Tory policies kill people. Some of us struggle to be nice to people who are okay with that.

DameXanaduBramble · 22/04/2017 15:22

If it's a patronising post you're after, there it is, right there, by the OP.

HorridHenryrule · 22/04/2017 15:23

Margaret Thatcher milk snatcher. She brought out the poll tax that everyone had to pay even the homeless. Why would anyone celebrate her death. My dad had a mortgage when she was pm and he hated her 15% interest rates I can't see her being that popular. Even my partner tells me that people handed over keys, jumped of buildings because of the interest rates. People were homeless.

Socialism is not about being nice. It is structuring a better, efficient society.

StatisticallyChallenged · 22/04/2017 15:25

I don't think that there is a pretty good reason for Tory being an insult though.

Some Tory policies are hideous. Others are not. Some people who vote Tory are rich selfish sods, but many aren't. You're not talking about votes cast for a hard right fascist party but for one of the three main parties in the country.

I find the common Scottish use of Tory as an insult really quite pathetic

ExplodedCloud · 22/04/2017 15:25

Oh I've seen 'leftards' used about Corbyn supporters.
