about changing a nappy on a cafe table?

So, I usually grab something quick and cheap for lunch but decided to treat myself to a nice baked spud in an art gallery cafe.

Half way through said spud, and perusing MN, I looked up to see that the people on the table nearby were changing a baby's nappy on the table where they'd just eaten.

My face must have been a bit of a picture because one of the women looked at me as if to say 'what?'. Feeling I had to justify myself, I said 'it's just that it's a bit grim changing a baby's nappy on a cafe table'.

The woman doing the changing asked if I was a mum. Instead of saying 'what difference would that make?', I said I had two children. She said she didn't realise I was watching(?). I said it was more of a hygiene thing, but yes, it had put me off my lunch somewhat.

She replied that it was 'only a bit of wee'.

So, was I being unreasonable hygiene thing and it is 'only a bit of wee', or is this utterly grim?

For clarity, this was in an area out of sight of the staff and I was the only other customer in that area.

The loos were ten paces away, full changing facilities and pristine.

So why not pop outside and change baby in the pram?

TessTube · 18/04/2017 20:24

Well like I said it's grim especially taking into account the available facilities but Mrs Kosla didn't do that and you just said she was revolting. Bit much.

woodhill · 18/04/2017 20:25

Grim

Did the cafe provide a changing table in the toilet?

TessTube · 18/04/2017 20:25

I don't know seeing as I wasn't the perpetrator and I haven't got a vortex into her mind.

dontbesillyhenry · 18/04/2017 20:26

No you aren't/haven't but you are justifying it Smile

WildKiwi · 18/04/2017 20:26

People are gross. I work on the basis that not only do people not want to see my baby's used nappies, they're also unlikely to want to see his bum and bits while he's being changed! There's also that lovely risk that he might pee or poo again while his nappy is off, which is definitely not something the rest of the world wants to see or be near.

I've changed him in the boot of the car before when there's no changing facilities.

There's always going to be exceptional times where there's no alternative, like if you don't have a car to retreat to etc. But generally there's going to be a better alternative than doing it in an area where people are eating.

TessTube · 18/04/2017 20:27

No I'm not.

MrsKoala · 18/04/2017 20:29

Well you can take that up with Fru. She organised it. It was a small pub in central London with function area/room which had folding doors pulled across. In the middle was one large table filling most of the room with about 20 chairs round the edge. In one corner was the old Joanna, and in the other was a small table. The loos, were a sink and a cubicle. Too small to get on the floor.

HookandSwan · 18/04/2017 20:31

Nope not unreasonable that is gross

Figgygal · 18/04/2017 20:31

Absolutely filthy

user1492528619 · 18/04/2017 20:31

Just ew. No words.

Crumbs1 · 18/04/2017 20:34

Unacceptable and very rude. A cafe table is not a lavatory or changing room. If it's just a wet nappy you can easily get up, go somewhere that has facilities and change baby in quiet. Lazy parenting and discourteous in the extreme.

MrsKoala · 18/04/2017 20:34

I can't find the thread to ask them if they think i am disgusting and were just being polite. Limitedperiod was there and so was Marriednotdead. I'll check with them.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 18/04/2017 20:35

Ffs MrsKoala! I was nearly at that meet-up. I would have said something. Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross.

Floggingmolly · 18/04/2017 20:35

Do the opinions of the posters on this thread not count, MrsK?

TheMysteriousJackelope · 18/04/2017 20:36

Lazy and ignorant of the most basic concepts of hygiene and how disease is spread. There is absolutely no excuse for this. Change the nappy on a changing mat on the ground in a secluded corner or in the boot of a car not where people are eating and drinking.

Even my cat knows not to poop where she eats and she doesn't even understand how doors work.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 18/04/2017 20:36

I know the pub. You could have gone to the outside area and done it on your lap!

On a table??

TheFairyCaravan · 18/04/2017 20:39

Why not change the nappy on the floor of the function room instead of the table, MrsKoala? Had I have been there I'd have said something. I'm not a "precious MNer" either.

NotJustAWife · 18/04/2017 20:44

🤢

Italiangreyhound · 18/04/2017 20:53

Of course you were not being unreasonable, it's bloody disgusting.

Who cares if it is just a bit of wee! If I got up and pissed the chair half way through dinner I am sure people would have loads to say about that!

YouBloodyWhat · 18/04/2017 20:54

Thankfully I've never witnessed such disgusting behaviour. Amazed that some people think that's acceptable.

DuoTwo · 18/04/2017 20:56

I think it's revolting. I don't think it's the worst thing hygiene wise but it's still gross.

MrsKoala · 18/04/2017 20:56

Fairy the chairs were right back to the walls. People were walking sideways and squeezing to get round. There was no room on the floor. Not sure i could do her on my lap now Bibbity, she's wriggly and massive. It wasn't a problem for anyone as far as i know - i'm just checking and of course if you or Bibbity were there and said you didn't like it i would have left in search of other options.

Littleraincloud · 18/04/2017 20:56

I once saw a woman change her baby's poo nappy on the shoe-trying-on-stool in primark. It was busy, she had to "shoo" (haha) people to move out of the way first. But the best bit... She left poo marks on the stool! She turned, looked at me with my baby and said "Shit happens". She was a classy lady if I ever saw one

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 18/04/2017 21:05

I would have raised ny eyebrows at the cafe table, but in honesty I can't get too worked up about a wet nappy.

Mrs K I can't understand the issue, I know loads of parents who would do the same. I'm surprised by the replies here.
