Cheese on toast AIBU

My method: grill on. Bread under. Slice cheese while one side browns. When side is brown, remove and flip over. Add cheese to non-brown side. Back under grill until cheese is bubbling. Eat.

DH's method: bread in toaster. Remove when browned. BUTTER one side Shock add cheese to buttered side. Grill cheese side. Eat.

I think the toaster part and buttering is completely unnecessary. AIBU?

I do it your way but I like the sound of your DH's method, because I bloody love butter.

Izzy24 · 19/02/2017 17:50

If you put it in the oven instead of under the grill it doesn't burn the already toasted edges .

Yum.

Enko · 19/02/2017 17:51

Neither but your dh is closest IMO. toast then add cheese then melt. NO BUTTER.

Sleepingonthebus · 19/02/2017 17:51

I like your way OP but I have also been known to make toast in the toaster and just put the cheese on it and eat. No roasting involved.

thecolonelbumminganugget · 19/02/2017 17:53

Your DH is correct although I would replace his butter with chutney. If you don't toast first it's floppy and if you toast one side it curls.

ladymariner · 19/02/2017 17:53

possum I'm with you, got to be Hendersons, the work of the gods!

Toast one side of the bread under the grill. Add cheese and Hendersons to the other side and shove back under the grill. No black edges, just utter delight!!!

PurpleDaisies · 19/02/2017 17:54

I do hate the burned bits of toast round the crusts though from the grill, I can never ever seem to avoid those.

You can avoid those by melting the cheese in the microwave, spreading on the untoasted side of the bread then grilling until brown. It's a bit labour and washing up intensive though!

gastropod · 19/02/2017 17:54

You are both right but... you forgot the Marmite!

InTheDessert · 19/02/2017 17:54

Your method is correct.
Too dry otherwise. And surely oily if butter is present too??

SummerHouse · 19/02/2017 17:55

I used to toast bread and microwave the cheese. Confused
Now I am with your DP all the way. Yes. Including the butter.

SummerHouse · 19/02/2017 17:57

inthedessert melted butter is not oil. This the necter of gods. Grin

Sparkletastic · 19/02/2017 17:57

Your way or the highway OP!

OhhBetty · 19/02/2017 17:58

I do what your dh does but usually with Jack Daniels BBQ sauce instead of butter!

StandAndBeCounted · 19/02/2017 17:58

You are the right one. I had no idea there was any other way to make cheese on toast and I am shocked to my very core at all the people agreeing with your DH.

HeeHighls · 19/02/2017 17:58

Bread in a toaster is never as good as under grill and always buttered so the cheese sticks.

Easier to make a cheese toastie in the frying pan. Fill two slices with whatever and cook in a non stick frying pan.

ItsThatBeverleyMacca · 19/02/2017 17:59

I asked because DS (2.5) refused to touch any of the delicious corned beef hash that we all had and instead requested cheese on toast. So DH and I had the usual 'you're not making it like that again are you?' discussion about the cheese on toast, so I needed to know once and for all who was BU!

I mostly do it like you, toast one side then flip and add cheese and grill

however sometimes I toast the bread first, add marg/butter, then marmite, then cheese then grill

MrsRhubarb · 19/02/2017 18:01

Your DH does it right. You (and my DH) do it wrong.

Wellitwouldbenice · 19/02/2017 18:01

I'm happy to come to your house and be an independent judge. I love cheese on toast Grin

Shodan · 19/02/2017 18:03

OP- if your crusts are burning you're clearly not putting on enough cheese.

Put more on than you think you should, then add a bit more.

Bonus: the lovely melty bits of cheese that have glooped off the edges and straight onto the grill pan...

Wellitwouldbenice · 19/02/2017 18:03

Actually forget my previous post. What an amazing idea to add butter to cheese on toast Smile Your husband is now a man of intrigue. I think I might be a little in love with him. Grin

quince2figs · 19/02/2017 18:03

I used to be same as you, OP, with the addition of a smudge of butter on the untoqsted side. DH the same. However we have now evolved a new system... lightly- medium toast bread in toaster. Butter if wished. Lay on cheese with Worcestershire sauce. Melt the fuck out of it with Dh's terrifying professional blowtorch ( saves putting grill on, quick, AND can avoid singed edges). Very useful for melting cheese on top of sandwich filling too. It's the way forward.

fledglingFTB · 19/02/2017 18:03

OP: 1 DH: 0

Only condiment acceptable under the cheese is mustard

AdaColeman · 19/02/2017 18:04

You haven't mentioned Lee & Perrins, so your being unreasonable.

Lespritdelsietanner · 19/02/2017 18:04

Lightly toast bread on both sides then spread Dijon mustard on the bread followed by grated cheese and sliced tomatoes.
