Cheese on toast AIBU

My method: grill on. Bread under. Slice cheese while one side browns. When side is brown, remove and flip over. Add cheese to non-brown side. Back under grill until cheese is bubbling. Eat.

DH's method: bread in toaster. Remove when browned. BUTTER one side Shock add cheese to buttered side. Grill cheese side. Eat.

I think the toaster part and buttering is completely unnecessary. AIBU?

White bread. You would not have a wholemeal fish finger. This is the same.

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/02/2017 18:20

Someone once offered me cheese on toast and gave me just that.
Toast with sliced cheddar on it.
Not melted.
It was not the same.

Olympiathequeen · 19/02/2017 18:22

I'm with DH in this too.

ItsThatBeverleyMacca · 19/02/2017 18:23

wellitwouldbenice he adds butter to lots of things, when he makes sandwiches there's always as much butter as filling!

chloe - my mum still has a very vintage oven with a grill tray at eye level - it was much easier to track the progress of the melting cheese! Ours is one in the oven, it takes ages to warm up but then it works too quickly so you have to stand ready with the oven gloves lest your grilled item becomes charred.

I do love tomato and onion with cheese on toast. Near where I work there's a bakery that does toasties - the menu lists cheese and ham, cheese and tomato, cheese and onion etc - when I asked for a cheese toastie with onion AND tomato the lovely lady behind the counter looked baffled, as if no one had ever walked in there with such an outrageous request, and went off to find her colleague to double check it could be done. Luckily it could.

I used to only toast one side out of laziness but then I got more interested in good food and realised that it's not exactly the best way to make cheese on toast.

So now I toast both sides, put decent cheese on and grill until bubbling with bits that 'catch' a bit. And yes to L&P or Hendersons.

No butter. Way too oily with melted cheese.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/02/2017 18:25

I do it your way OP but with Worcestershire sauce or marmite spread beneath the cheese, or with a sliced tomato on top of the cheese.

Jux · 19/02/2017 18:26

It needs marmite and black pepper.
The butter is used for added flavour, nothing to do with moisture.

So you're both wrong. Wink

bonbonours · 19/02/2017 18:27

I make it the same as op. If you toast both sides first the edge would surely burn while you were waiting for the cheese to melt.

zukiecat · 19/02/2017 18:27

Both are wrong because Cheese on Toast is vile horrible stuff!

bonbonours · 19/02/2017 18:29

Snowone, op DOES toast both sides, on without the cheese on, one with.

To those who just put it in the oven, does the underside brown??

PurpleDaisies · 19/02/2017 18:32

Both are wrong because Cheese on Toast is vile horrible stuff!
You're obviously doing it wrong. Grin

SuperFlyHigh · 19/02/2017 18:33

I do it your DH's way but only so it's sort of half toasted (not brown, well done etc).

No butter, no need.

I also top with tomatoes then black pepper ground on top. Perfect.

SuperFlyHigh · 19/02/2017 18:35

My mother does the toast properly (well done) and butters it. We always look at each other like Hmm when we are at each other's houses and make this!

She doesn't say no to it may way though!

Mysty · 19/02/2017 18:37

Not read all comments but - bread in toaster for a light toasting - then apply tomatoe and chilli pesto to the lightly toasted bread - then add cheese and pop under grill 👌

honeylulu · 19/02/2017 18:38

Your DH is right, exactly as I would do it.
If made for adults I consider it essential to have a sprinkling of crushed dried chillies on top (or failing that, cayenne pepper).

DancingHouse · 19/02/2017 18:39

No butter, if you think it's too dry without you haven't got enough cheese.

And I toast one side and half toast the other.

RainyDayBear · 19/02/2017 18:41

I am not on board with the concept of butter! But agree with toast in toaster then melt the cheese under the grill. Also Worcestershire sauce, mmmmm

winterinmadeira · 19/02/2017 18:42

I do it your way. Makes sense to me.

misskatamari · 19/02/2017 18:42

I toast in the toaster then put cheese on and bung under the grill. I must try your way tho op and see if it is better! Mmmm cheese on toast!

Hidingtonothing · 19/02/2017 18:42

Depends what I fancy, 'proper' cheese on toast is your way OP but I also like both slices done in toaster, buttered then grated cheese and HP sauce on one and the other slice of buttered toast on top so it's a sandwich. I also sometimes do 1 slice like you do it but with some thinly sliced tomato under the cheese and then a second slice of just dry toast on top so it's a cheese and tomato toastie, sounds like it would be too dry but it's not. Can you tell we eat a lot of cheese on toast in our house? Grin

PageStillNotFound404 · 19/02/2017 18:44

YANBU OP. Your DH is a philistine. LTB.

I do it your way for speed or, if I can be bothered, with grated cheese mixed to a very stiff paste with mayo and a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard. Then a sprinkling of cayenne pepper on top.

Really want cheese on toast now.

Phantommagic · 19/02/2017 18:44

I sometimes put a thin layer of mayo under the cheese! Toast one side only too.

ArchNotImpudent · 19/02/2017 18:51

A tiny bit of Reggae Reggae sauce is great on cheese on toast. This thread has got me craving cheese on toast!

MGFM · 19/02/2017 18:51

Your way is the only way bot don't forget the Worcestershire sauce!
