To think it's rude to ask someone how much their mortgage repayments are?

Two people have asked me this since I moved to my new house.

I kind of feel it's like asking someone how much they earn. It's personal and should only be shared if that person offers up that information freely.

I totally agree. I can almost understand people asking in a general sense "did you get a good deal, best interest rate" etc, but not actual monetary figures. I don't like to talk about money really, it's quite personal.

it's VERY rude, and none of their business.
If they want to check the value of your house (UK), they can go online, but knowing how much deposit you paid/ mortgage length and amount.. really none of their business. I can't believe someone would ask that!

I wouldn't like this either, as it's a way of finding out what your deposit was (roughly) and potentially your salary.

I think it's rude. Blimey they can find out how much you paid for it via zoopla, look at the pictures of the inside when it was up for sale and look up general interest rates. Have you offered a rummage thru your knicker-drawer as well?Hmm

In a few months they'll know how much you paid for your house which to me is way more personal. I happily tell people how much our mortgage is as it's really cheap Smile

I wouldn't be comfortable with that. They can look the house up on RM if they're dying of curiousity, beyond that is private.

This would not bother me, only because I suspect they would be looking at mortgage deals themselves and wanting an estimate of how much repayments are.

I don't understand why it's even a thing to ask. My mortgage is massive but I overpay a lot each month.. I've always assumed this was what you're really supposed to do, ie pay what you can afford. So if someone found out how much I pay each month they'd probably assume I have double the outstanding I actually do. I also increase and decrease it according to circumstances (pay rises, mat leave) so honestly I don't even know how I'd answer the question. I wouldn't ask anyone either because I've just always assumed most people do what I do and decide how much they want to pay.

There are enough online calculator for that kind of thing, you don't need to ask someone the price of the house (which you can find easily) but also the amount of their deposit, their income, credit history, the full financial picture that will have an influence on the mortgage they got.

Extremely rude. My friend and her husband are a bit into keeping up with the joneses, first time he came to my house he told me he had looked at the price of houses in my development and actually said you paid [X] thousand didnt you Shock recently i bought a new car and he asked me how much it cost me to tax it Hmm trying to figure out what model I have and how much it cost me! Confused

I'm not sure this would bother me.

I just started renting and a few people a work asked how much rent is especially when I said I live alone and someone asked me and someone else how much our deposits were because he's trying to get ideas as he's looking to move out too. I asked them when I was looking [shrug].

Pretty much everyone who asked did so in a way that wasn't particularly nosey and I was clear that is was ok if I didn't tell them.

Depends who it is. If it's someone close and they want to get a feel for what they might be able to afford, then it's not. If it's someone less close, or just someone who is nosey, then it is.

It is rude. Having said that, lots of people seem to think nothing of asking how much tenants pay in rent each month, which is much the same question.

I've had plenty ask how much our rent is...

and then go OMG when they realise it's £200 a month more than their mortgage (and we can't afford to get on the housing ladder - something isn't right!)

I don't see the issue, shrugs. Your house price will be on right move soon enough.

It's nothing like the same question Confused. You pay the going rate to rent. To buy there are many variables including deposit, credit history, choice of deal, affordability.

I wouldn't ask because I realise it's rude, but Id really want to. Not because I have any to know your salary, I'm just interested to know the price of houses.
