To not get these Pearl Parties

Idratherbeaunicorn · 16/02/2017 13:12

I see these 'pearl parties' on Facebook live all the time... I don't get it but people seem to be going nuts for them?
How does it work? Do any of you do them?

I'm not on Facebook so this is the first time I've heard of them. What on earth is a pearl party?

wishparry · 16/02/2017 13:14

I've never heard of a pearl party.

Meeep · 16/02/2017 13:14

Is this an advert?

Idratherbeaunicorn · 16/02/2017 13:15

I'm not 100% myself!
From what I gather the "host" opens oysters and records it live, people watch and buy the pearls?

OP posts:
Idratherbeaunicorn · 16/02/2017 13:16

Gosh no, not an advert! Just genuinely curious as I really just don't get it!

wtf?! intrigued!

Aebj · 16/02/2017 13:16

I' re never heard of one either !!

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 16/02/2017 13:17

Ohhh oysters. I assumed it was a euphemism for something dirty.....

CockacidalManiac · 16/02/2017 13:19

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone

I think you're thinking of Pearl necklace Parties. That's something else entirely.

Gottagetmoving · 16/02/2017 13:20

Yes, A friend of mine has a sister who is doing this on facebook. Selling silver necklaces and rings with a pearl in them. Not sure what they are called but something like, Amora or Amara pearls?

They look pretty enough. This girl opens an oyster and shows you the pearl you will get in the necklace you have ordered. I didn't know it was a 'thing' I just thought it was a business my friend's sister had.

WasabiNell · 16/02/2017 13:29

Eurgh someone at work is obsessed with these. She shows me the videos all the time. Basically you pay a set price and then they open an oyster live on Facebook, prod around and finger it for a bit to find the pearl then hold it up to the camera. Say you buy two pearls though for an earring set there is no guarantee they'll match, she bought two and one is black and one is pink but she wears the earrings Confused. All a bit strange if you ask me.

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 16/02/2017 13:32

looks like another sparkly business fairy type thing...

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 16/02/2017 13:32

ie, you pay them a lot of money for a "business" that you then have to push on all your friends and family until they hate you.

Idratherbeaunicorn · 16/02/2017 13:34

GoesDown - thanks, that was my thought too. Some of the people I know are obsessed with them! Personally it's not my cup of tea.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 16/02/2017 13:35

Exactly what GoesDown says.
It's yet another MLM selling inferior products that you could get for a tenth of the cost on eBay. Steer clear.

JoanofNark17 · 16/02/2017 13:37

It's just another MLM. It's a con job, cheap painted pearls are inserted into dead oysters and then "revealed" to marks who then pay 20 quid or whatever for the pearl and then more money to set it into some fugly jewellry.
And you're supposed to con all your friends into hosting them too.

MagicChicken · 16/02/2017 13:37

OMFG what is going on here? Shock

I read this exact thread a couple of weeks ago - right down to the comment about pearl necklace parties, yet here it is again, looking identical but with today's date on the OP.

Have I wandered into the twilight zone or what? Confused

MagicChicken · 16/02/2017 13:41

here it is

Not completely identical after all. Phew. Weirdly similar though.

Lochan · 16/02/2017 13:44

So you pay a set price for a pearl you haven't even seen?

The very definition of buying "a pig in a poke" as my Grandfather would have said.

Why on earth would you?

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 16/02/2017 13:45

I did think this was hilarious though. check out her "treasured gems":

www.vantelpearls.com/story.asp

and also this little quote for life.... (bleurgh)

"How many of us are able to take a challenge, as Oysters do, and find the gift in it?"

IwasAM · 16/02/2017 13:55

"How many of us are able to take a challenge, as Oysters do, and find the gift in it?"

^ just made me laugh out loud. Got a plumber here ATM and he just gave me a seriously sideways look Blush

V v funny though. People genuinely thinking the 'pearl' has only just been 'discovered' in front of their ooing and ahhing eyes Grin

CaoNiMa · 16/02/2017 13:55

I'm not quite sure how we as a society have reached the point where people pay money to watch someone prise open bivalves on camera.

piefacerecords · 16/02/2017 13:57

I only clicked on this because I thought it would be something juicy about swingers

How can anybody not think the whole thing is fake? Most oysters do not contain pearls - so what would happen if everybody opened their 'oyster' and didn't find one (as would happen)? Nobody would buy any of their crappy tat to have their 'pearl' put into.

What a load of old bollox.

IwasAM · 16/02/2017 13:58

TaliDiNozzo · 16/02/2017 13:59

Oh man. I know someone who is doing this. Its in Hertfordshire and she is doing it along with someone who sells Younique (although she points out it's not an MLM thing! Yeah right). So daft.
